Happy Memorial Day Everyone.  My your holiday be safe and joyful.  Never forget and honor the sacrifice of those who gave their all so that we may be free.  :flag:

I Came To Visit You Today

I came to visit you today
To place this flag next to your grave.
The sacrifices you have made
Will forever be indebted this day.

I came to visit you today
To place this flag next to your grave.
It doesn't matter if you fought or not
'Cause with that uniform it doesn't matter what.

I came to visit you today
To place this flag next to your grave.
The memory of what once was you
Still lingers true for those who knew.

I came to visit you today
To place this flag next to your grave
To just say thank you on this Memorial Day.

Do you say 'Happy Memorial Day'? Why some military families wish you wouldn't.

Let me simplify it.

A post-June 1st or a post-June 1st simply spreads the dead cap money over two seasons (the current plus the next) instead of one.  It's but one of many tricks to borrow money from future seasons.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on May 26, 2024, 09:37:22 PMThe details of the NFL salary cap are often confusing, and the rules around post-June 1 cuts can seem even more complicated. Let's take a closer look at the NFL's post-June 1 regulations, what the post-June 1 designation means, and how it affects teams and players.

NFL Post-June 1 Cut

Let's start with a straightforward NFL release that occurs at the beginning of the new league year in March. If a team cuts a player at any point before June 1, all of his future guarantees and remaining prorated signing bonus will immediately "accelerate" onto the club's salary cap.

The team is forced to absorb all of those charges at once. The cap space being allocated toward a player no longer on the roster is referred to as "dead money."

However, the NFL's post-June 1 rule states that any player released or traded after June 1 will have his dead money spread over two seasons instead of only the current campaign.

For example, let's say a player has three years remaining on his contract with prorated signing bonus money of $5 million each season. Were he to be released or traded before June 1, his team would take on $15 million in dead money in 2024: three seasons at $5 million per.

But if the club waited until June 2 to trade or release that player, the post-June 1 rules would come into play. The team would still incur the player's $5 million dead money charge for 2024, but the remaining $10 million would be pushed to the 2025 salary cap.

NFL Post-June 1 Designation

Still, teams don't always want to wait until June 2 to cut a player because he could have roster bonuses or other guarantees that could kick in during the interim.

Meanwhile, players don't want to be held captive on a roster all spring only to be released in June when most clubs have already used the majority of their cap space.

To fix those problems, NFL teams can use a post-June 1 designation when releasing a player. The player will immediately hit the open market, while the club can still realize the benefits of a post-June 1 cut without having to actually wait to release the player.

Teams can use the post-June 1 designation on two players each season.

However, there is one significant drawback to the post-June 1 designation: Clubs have to carry the player's full cap charge for the current season until June, even though he is no longer on the roster.

Because the club doesn't get to realize the additional cap space until June 2, post-June 1 designations aren't helpful in creating immediate cap room for teams who want to sign free agents in March. However, the designations can help clubs that project to be tight on cap space later in the summer when it's time to sign rookie classes.

One final, essential note: There is no post-June 1 designation for trades. A team can wait until after June 1 to process a trade and will see the same cap benefits we outlined, but they cannot trade a player in April and designate the deal as a post-June 1 trade.

So does this mean bye-bye Darren Waller? And anyone else?

In a nutshell, they do not have to actually wait until June 1st to cut the player, but even if they announce/inform player on May 1st, $ stays on cap until then.  With Waller, not so sure what will happen.  He can string them along knowing it is a huge cap penalty if they just cut him.  Or, maybe he is hoping they cut him so he can try to sign elsewhere with guaranteed money?

Quote from: BluesCruz on Today at 07:37:18 AMDan Marino

Marino was 6'4"/230.  He was, in fact, a prototypical QB. Tarkenton was also considered above average for his era, as 6 feet/200 lbs wasn't small in the 60s.  Size clearly matters, hence the term prototype size.  Just consider the top 15 QBs of all-time, in term of passing yards; 13 of 15 had the ideal height to play QB.  You simply can't brush that off....

Thanks for this info

Confusing but explains a lot about the way rosters are created and sometimes good players let go

NFL.com has Daniel Jones ranked 29th out of 32 probable starters in 2024.  How did we get in this mess?  With a 29th ranked QB your season is logically pretty much over before it starts.  Gettleman gave us Jones and followed up with Barkley.  Unless Jones re-invents himself he has to go as did Barkley before we can get back in the conversation.

Despite all this Im going into the season thinking playoffs. Somehow, someway we will overcome the problem

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on May 26, 2024, 05:49:38 AMIf that happens, it won't matter unless he has meaningful success elsewhere.

Keep in mind that a year ago the Giants were the only team in the NFL that was interested in him.
Quote from: MightyGiants on May 24, 2024, 07:10:13 AMI really don't see DeVito's comments as news.  Despite the coaching rhetoric about draft status being meaningless, when a team spends valuable draft capital on a player, it gives that player more stature.  It's likely been that way since the NFL instituted the draft.

Lets hope that does not happen.  Do you really want to hang your hat on Jones and Drew Lock?   Last year I believe DeVito pretty much ran the team in pre-season.  He started 6-7 more games during the season.   In that respect he is our most seasoned QB using 2023  data.

He looks the part out there.  Jones looked tentative and lost before injury. He. basically could not move the team downfield.   I have no idea what Lock brings to the party.

There is definitely a bias towards tall, strong QBs- Tom Brady, Josh Allen, Eli Manning types.  That overlooks the fact Joe Montana, Drew Brees, Dan Marino, and Fran Tarkenton were not overly tall and populate the top 10 QBs of all time list.

In todays NFL you sink or swim with the QB.  I'd prefer to not sink because of tall man bias.
