Mighty Giants - 2021 looks like a pretty barren roster!

I think Schoen is doing things the right way. Is he perfect? No. No one is.

I am happy with Nabers. Need to build the team. Maye would have been nice but we need picks.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Waller getting divorced

Or, he is abusing drugs again.

Or, he was distracted last season cause his marriage was not Aces

Or, he lost the motivation she fell
in love with.

Or, who really knows except he underperfomed expectations?

He is a more mobile Ryan Tannehill. Right pieces around him and he can succeed. Not a difference maker.

Quote from: Giant Obsession on January 04, 2024, 04:00:28 PMBoth Wink and Kafka will not be here next season.

Followed by midseason next year by HC "Sparky".

And Shoen is on a shorter leash than ever.

We are in cap hell.....again.

And this draft better be special, cuz the first two ain't even close.

I think Schoen and Daboll are safe, even next year unless we are even worse than this year. Perhaps Daboll more on hot seat than Schoen but the GM will have much more time in the seat. As for cap hell, it is not the long term Gettleman cap hell, it is short term, with outs and work-arounds.

That said the one thing that confuses me is how these teams always somehow trade for superstars give them these huge contracts and never seem to be in the year to year situation where they're bumping up against the cap like we are without any of the massive signings.

Quote from: Giantleap56 on December 27, 2023, 08:44:46 PMIt's not the players it's the coaching. It's always been the coaching. If you can't get the players on the same page it's the coaching. OL is all about preparation, not having backups ready that's coaching. The Giants haven't had a good offensive line coach in a long long time. The Giants need to find the best and make him an offer. Go to the 49ers or Eagle poach their offensive line coach.

It's Toretto, Brian, it always has been.

I almost countered your point but then I finished reading your post. Agree, Agree, Agree. But yeah, the talent gap on this team vs others is unreal. We are slowly putting the pieces back together but we need to bingo on some studs in a draft for a change. I dont mean a "real good player" we need to hit on a generational talent.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Is it coaching or talent
December 26, 2023, 09:58:22 AM
Schoen had to basically flip the whole roster. Clearly a talent issue. Last year we coached out and lucked into some wins we probably shouldn't have. I just don't think this is a HC issue but I do agree there needs to be better fluidity and talent in the assistant ranks. To me this is just the growing pains of a long rebuild. We are paying the piper for years of bad signings and drafting.

Quote from: Painter on December 10, 2023, 03:37:43 PMIt seems clear that you and I see it very differently, Jess. With due respect, I suspect that your view is askew due to your anti-Jones bias, a consequence of which is to minimize, mitigate, or deflect from the fact that the Giants Oline through 12 games has been among the worst in pass blocking in NFL history.

We aren't just looking at a team ranked last in both Total and Passing Offense (in yards and in scoring, both total and per game) but also and more than incidentally- more like outrageous- an NFL leading 54 sacks, 183 pressures allowed, the last time I looked while gagging.

As I suggested above, I wouldn't be surprised to see them change Oline Coaches at season's end even though I'm not sure that any of the Olinemen other than Thomas, Schmitz (and for now, Evan Neal) are worth keeping.

Still, it won't have anything to do with whether a healthy Daniel Jones will be the Giants starting QB in '2024. We can take it from Joe Schoen, he will be. It is, for no other reason that based on his 10 win including a Road PO game and a NFL's 6th best QBR in 2022 that they signed him to new 4 year deal for which they must pay him no less than $35 million guaranteed next season, healthy or not.

Of course, with only Tommy "Cutlets" DeVito there as backup, it does seem likely that whether or not they add a FA, they also may add someone in the Draft. Still, even if they end up picking in the 5 to 8 range, I'd be surprised if they used it on one of the current 3 or 4 highly-rated QBs.

In any event, whatever they do, they had damn-well better FIX that Division 2 Oline before it butchers another QB and season.

Cheers!

I've been a major Jones proponent. I always yearned to see him have receivers to throw to and an O-line to protect him. That said, this is the NFL. You're never going to have the perfect suite of players to complement you. With the cap, you may have some deficiencies at WR or be missing a much needed guard/tackle. And yet, I've seen across the league that the good QBs make do with what they have and flourish. Jones does not have those intangibles. He looked mechanical and rigid. Something just did not click this year and he seemed off from the first game and never really recovered (outside of Zona in the 2nd half).

Tommy D may not be Brock Purdy but he has shown that perhaps it wasn't the "coaching" the "scheme" the "line" the "receivers" it may have just been that Jones is not a fit for Daboll and/or he is just a middling QB with a high draft pick around his neck. If we're truly honest, it happens. Guys like Darnold and Sanchez may have had some good games here and there but consistency is key.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Packers vs. Giants Predictions

I think the Giants win here. Giants seem to have the 2022 strategy working again. Make it ugly, win late. Yes, we have played two awful teams but our D is actually playing inspired again. 21-20 Giants

Quote from: Ed Vette on November 30, 2023, 10:22:00 AMI think back on how many times Gary Myers and Paul Schwartz fired Tom Coughlin because he lost the team.

Sometimes I think the only one who focus' on what's important is Patty Traina. She had some excellent questions at Daboll's presser.

She is the best and her podcasts are honest and thoughtful. I think she really takes the time to know the man AND the story.

Quote from: GeauxJints on November 29, 2023, 10:52:51 PMWouldn't mind grabbing Ewers in the second round. Guy has a load of talent and moxie.

I heard he is coming back to TX which is why Arch Manning may hit the portal. I like Ewers too, though.

Quote from: katkavage on November 23, 2023, 10:22:47 AMNice of Dave to put the Giants there when he reached for Jones. The question is: do you have faith in Schoen? He is doing his homework now. His rep will be on the line. Not to mention his job.

I feel like the Giants are looking more at a Bo Nix type than Drake May. Nothing to back it up, just a gut feeling.

Quote from: MightyGiants on November 17, 2023, 06:09:02 PMI listened to his podcast (it's a really good episode).   The list Carl is referring to is the historic list of first round QBs and how many bust.

Well to be fair, we have had busts on the O-line for years so maybe we do better drafting QB lol.

Quote from: Ed Vette on November 17, 2023, 11:02:21 AMI believe he's involved in GM, HC, and QB hiring decisions. I also believe he's in the Draft Planning room as an ear near the end. I also think he and the GM communicate throughout the season. I don't believe he meddles to the point where others have commented.

Compared to other team owners we have a good one. Mara is a bit old school and archaic in his view of the hierarchy but I think he is more hands off this time around than most say. He knows going loyal and "in house" cost the team dearly with Gettleman, he is giving Schoen and Daboll time to mold the team.
