Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants and the Alex Smith model

Quote from: True Blue on September 26, 2023, 03:46:41 PM@Dgoodmantrublu I agree with your post and assessment. Alex Smith is a great comparison.

Daniel Jones is a good QB, as was Smith. Jones is a much better runner, Smith probably a slightly better passer so it about evens out. But while these guys are good QBs they limit the ceiling the team has.

I would be in favor of the approach you suggested. This lets them compete and build for another season and a half, and then they can work towards taking that next leap for the team. A trade for DJ is unlikely but they can get out easy enough if they decide that is the best move. Hopefully he breaks out but after 5 years I think what you see is what you get, but I am holding out hope that he can put it all together and step up to where he needs to be. If he does that makes things that much easier with him at QB.

But in all likelihood he has that Alex Smith ceiling

Im torn. Starting with the film, some of it may be deceiving while other parts of it are eye opening. Alex Smith is a fair comp and you can win with a guy like that.

That said, remember when Payton was stripped
of play calling? Or when Hufnagel was fired? One knock in Payton was he had too much motion and it gummed up the offense. Hufnagel didnt work well
with Eli's skillset. Point being, under Shurmur DJ let it rip. Because he has to game manage more because of the perceived talent gap between most teams, he is tentative. Bottom
line, even with a suspect O line he needs more autonomy to let if fly.

Low character is killing someone in a DUI or DV issues. But

Or is it a guy who had zero actual noteworthy negative incidents but has a reputation for taking plays off, not always being focused on football, having a me-attitude versus a team attitude, etc.

Based on how we have drafted for some time now, it sort of feels like we cross all of example A off our board, but don't necessarily cross example B off the board. Or we don't due enough due diligence on example B.

I mean look at our team right now. Sure, nobody on the team had a DUI or a bar fight in college that he got caught for, but if we're so discriminating about "character", how do you explain guys like McKinney or even Thibodeaux being on the team?

He killed a guy. Low character. I am
just saying a team on a roll like Philly can take a chance on a talent stud like that because they are the big stack at the table. We are/were the stack. We have to thread the needle. I don't disagree though. Sure, we cross off those guys but then we talked ourselves into a guy who has some good highlights but is not an all day every play effort guy.

Quote from: shadowspinner0 on September 26, 2023, 04:26:36 PMDidn't deter the Eagles from getting him and adding to their already dominant defense

I think a team like the Eagles has a less conservative ownership that can take a chance on a "low character" guy. They have a solid veteran presence which helps too. We are trying to build a culture. I get, don't agree with it. Our hypocrisy disappoints a bit as well. We pass on Parsons for character concerns but drafted Toney. granted, it was a different regime but still.

Excellent summary.  I appreciate the work you put in.  :ok:

Is McKinney becoming Landon Collins 2.0 only a lesser version?

Big Blue Huddle / Re: CJ Stroud Vs Daniel Jones

Quote from: T200 on September 26, 2023, 07:15:46 AMIs there a need to be "in your face" with your response??

Sorry. I do not typically get that aggressive but the anti DJ rhetoric is for another board (IMHO).  But I see your point; my apologies. As for the other poster who critiqued the argument for DJ because I felt the Dallas game was a throw away, the whole argument for each is subjective.

Quote from: Philosophers on September 25, 2023, 11:57:03 PMThrough 3 games:

CJ - 78/121 (64.5%) 906 yds, 4 TDs/0 INTs, 7.5 Y/A, 11.6 Y/C, Rate 98, Sacks 11, Sack % 8.3%

DJ - 63/97 (64.9%) 562 yds, 2 TDs/4 INTs 5.8 Y/A, 8.9 Y/C, Rate 70, Sacks 12, Sack % 11%

CJ's WRs - Nico Collins, Robert Woods, Tank Dell + TE Dalton Schultz

CJ's OL - Laremy Tunsil, Josh Jones, Michael Deiter, Shaq Mason, George Fant

CJ's RB - Dameon Pierce

Texans Offense Ranking - 13th (Yards)
Texans Defense Ranking - 16th (Yards)

1st year QB who is throwing for about the same completion % but a lot more yards and has been sacked about the same amount.  CJ's Y/A and Y/C is much higher.  When I look at the players on offense for the Texans, I hardly say, "wow, so much more talent around CJ than what DJ has."

Houston played New England, Miami and the New Orleans Saints.

So what are the reasons the Texans have better passing results through 3 games with a 1st year QB?

1) They played the Ravens, Colts and Jacksonville. Hard to take this seriously when your facts are already not factual.

2) The defense of the 3 correct opponents are middle of the pack to awful. DJ faced the top 1-2 defense in 2 of 3 games and after adjustments lit up the Cards in an epic performance.

3) The Dallas game has to go in the garbage. do you have a blocked field goal for TD. A Barkley key drop which led to a pick 6 and in poor weather. Against Parsons and a team that knew we had to pass at thaf point. Almost any team in week 1 down 14-0 would have been a bit shell shocked except for 3-4 teams.

I gave facts, where are yours?
