Quote from: Philosophers on Today at 11:14:17 AMKalen DeBoer was a HC in North Dakota who was highly successful playing nationally.  At University of Washington, he put that program at a new level of success.  Alabama pounced on him when Saban retired.  I've read that what he has developed further in Jalen Milroe at QB and their offense so quickly has been amazing.  Some coaches have IT.  A record of like 114-12.  Very hard to do.

I guess, my question is more about what some around here would consider success as an NFL head coach.  I think there are some obvious ones, but there are a lot more that some would say is successful and others would say they were not successful. I bet even a guy like Sean Payton would have those that say he was only successful because of Brees...Or that Mike Tomlin isn't successful because he won early with the previous guys players.... some people would have said that prior to his tenure in KC Andy Reid was not a successful HC even though he went to a Super Bowl and 4 consecutive NFC championships....

Every few years we have this debate (sadly) about which do you prefer - a former HC, a coordinator, a retread....and there is always a group that wants nothing to do with one or more of those groups.  I remember people questioning when NE hired BB.  "He needed Parcells to deal with the personalities"  Of course his not so great record in Cleveland was the best HC tenure they had for some time.

It makes me laugh tbh.  I think the issue is that fans want to have an opinion and we base that opinion on what we know.  So for instance - "turned that program around", "He has had success at every stop", etc...

In my humble opinion, a great HC can come from any of those places, college, coordinator or retread.  Its not where they have been, its if they are the right guy to lead men.  And honestly, without having worked with or around any of these guys, none of us actually knows if a guy has those qualities.  They all must have some amount of those qualities or they wouldn't get to the levels they have had success at.

Quote from: Philosophers on Today at 10:23:49 AMIf there's an experienced 50 year old former HC with a record of repetitive success, I'm all for grabbing him however I believe many coordinators fail because they dont have the skills to a) organize every aspect to a team build, b) hire proven position coaches, and c) develop a team identity immediately.  We've now gone through what four head coaches since Coughlin, three of which were "hot" coordinators (plus horrible Shurmur a failed HC).  I'd rather a 70 year old for 3-4 years whobhas these skills than go another round of failed experiments.

Give me Saban, Carroll or BB over any of these guys who dont know $hit about getting this stuff above right.  Jim Harbaugh was that rare HC out there witth those skills and the Chargers smartly pounced.  Not sure who else is there that is sub 60 and proven.

How do we define success?  I think that varies from person to person.

Defense dominated a week Patriots offense.  Jets offense was impressive against what had been a pretty solid defense the 1st two weeks.  Tyler Conklin had a great game.  Jets are a legit contender if they can have another weapon in the passing game in addition to Wilson. A balanced offense with that defense will be a tough out.

Quote from: JT39 on September 18, 2024, 11:52:11 AMJim Harbaugh brought an instant identity to the Chargers.

Can anyone name out identity in our last 4 head coaches?

Identity of those teams has been finding ways to lose.

Save the salary cap money and cut ties.

 WOW will wonders never cease.

But, looking back, with the way we are playing on the defensive line, was this really a good trade?

Dallas's run defense was no better than Giants last weekend.

Chatman and Davidson were big liabilities last game.  Davidson didn't make the goat list but I don't think he had enough snaps or he would have been on it.

As others have said, it's 2 weeks. Lets see if they can make adjustments and learn from mistakes.  I am sure opposing offenses will keep running if they don't stop it.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Should Giants Trade For Bryce Young?

Hold that question to you see how his replacement does.  I am not big fan of 5'10" QBs.  Yes there are a few guys who have broken the mold and succeeded, but its the exception, not the rule.

QBs coming from programs where there team had a huge talent advantage in 98% of their games are tough to judge sometimes.

Yes the Chargers are 2-0.  Not sure I put much into the fact that they gave up 3 points to the Panthers and 10 to the Gardner Minshew led Raiders.  And yes I know the Raiders won in Baltimore.  Just not ready to anoint the Chargers yet.  They look better but were previously coached by one of the worst decision makers I have seen at the NFL level.

Plenty to learn about this team over the next two weeks against the Steelers and Chiefs.

The conspiracy theory makes no logical sense.

Some of this is sloppy play from a shorter preseason and less snaps for starters.

There was a lot of optimism with that trade for a number of reasons.

The general feel I got around this forum was strong approval and praise for brining in someone who was believed to be an elite pass rusher.

Not sure how we all felt at the time matters.  Two games in he doesn't look great.  There is 15 more games this season to change minds.  Of course looking at the schedule, 0-8 at this point would not be a surprise.  Any impact he has might not be felt with wins.

Quote from: MrGap92 on September 16, 2024, 12:55:57 PMWouldn't great players be part in building a team? I just do not understand the argument here

I agree with you.  I have seen some fans say you have to get the QB first before you get WRs, RBs and pretty much anything else.  On the other hand you have those that think you need to get as much in place as possible so the team can be competitive for the 4 years of the QBs rookie deal. The potential issue with that way is that if you have a very talented team will you be in position to draft a top QB?

I think it can work either way as well as some other ways if you have the right players and coaches.

Right now Nabers looks like a great pick to me.  If they draft a QB in 2025 he will come in with a stud WR in place and what looks like better blocking.  To me thats a better way to get a QB integrated into the NFL.

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 16, 2024, 10:24:41 AMActually, he was never an "elite pass rusher".  He was a good pass rusher who, as Brandon Brown said on Hard Knocks, was a player they believed was ascending.

Sounds like Olivier Vernon
