Quote from: madbadger on Today at 09:17:58 AMI'm with Dave. I don't see much in the way of value even if four of the guys drafted start next year. To me value is drafting a guy who unexpectedly dropped to them. For instance Kool Aid McKinstry was a consensus top 10 pick this time last year. He almost made it to us at 47. That pick imho would have been tremendous value. I'll say this for Schoen and company, they don't reach for guys. Everyone they picked went in the range that they were projected to go.

madb: Do you disagree with my post (the part about Nabers)?  Bob

He was my vote for best value pick by the Giants this year. And what's on that video shows why they took him. Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on April 27, 2024, 02:07:46 PMAt least it's a bunch of C+ guys instead of the D- to C- group they had the bring in. I did want a Guard in the Second Round but I guess they wanted to upgrade the McKless Unit.

Ed: I wanted a guard too (in round three/four). Maybe they got "aced out" by a team slightly ahead of them... or maybe they have reason to believe Evan Neal will be much improved this year (I don't have such reason). That is the key, because Eluemunor is a very solid guard (but he can't be if he must play right tackle)... or maybe they view the situation at defensive backfield as more "dire" now that they signed two decent free-agent linemen. Quote from: Ed Vette on Today at 06:58:34 AMThe elephant in the room is John Mara.

Ed: Reluctantly I agree. But I don't think it's as bad as you do. It's clear Mara believed it was necessary (at the risk of continuing to stink) to treat Jones fairly. The comment on which both of us hang our hats is when he said [paraphrasing] "We did everything possible to screw this kid up." Remember, the rest of the league (especially the players) are always watching in the modern NFL (where it's now commonplace for players to play for multiple teams) and it's a "good thing" to have a reputation of being a place where workers like to work and are treated fairly. I happen to agree 100 percent with Mara (not with the interference, but with his words). Bob

Injuries aside, it depends who is shown to have been correct. Two issues:

(A) Did we need a better QB than Jones? - If the "we need a new QB" people are correct, the Giants will continue to stink. If the "we need an elite weapon" people are correct, the Giants will make enough progress to get maybe nine wins. The schedule this year will be a bit easier and the offense will be able to either to keep the ball away from the opponent or attempt to outscore them (depending on which team we're playing).

(B) Is running back really a lot less important than it has been historically? - If the "yes" people are correct then the Giants have a good-enough answer to the absence of Saquon and we'll be ok because the offensive line has clearly been upgraded.  If the "no" people are correct, we will miss Saquon and teams won't have to game-plan to stop him, leaving them free to game-plan to stop either the upgraded receiving corps or spy Jones and keep him from running the ball.

PS. Defense will be about the same as last year, but don't forget we must have (a) someone step up as a viable replacement for Leonard Williams (IMO he was an unsung hero on defense and a good running partner for Dexter); and (b) we need a young veteran to become a "star" (maybe number five, maybe Burns, maybe Okereke) plus no 2nd-year player fall into a sophomore-year slump.  That may seem to be a lot to hope for, but IMO it's not only do-able.

IMO what they get out of this player could change a solid draft into a home run. Players from the various islands of the south Pacific have done well in the NFL and I see him as the player taken by the Giants who is most likely to exceed expectations (if you consider the round in which a player was taken as indicative of expectations). I think it came down to the trade for Burns.

With Pick 39, IMO they had enough ammo to buy Pick Three from the Pats (and take whomever - probably Maye).

So which would you rather have... Burns plus Nabers -or- Maye?  My favorite (Daniels) was already gone so I say they're better off with Burns and Nabers (and they still have next year's 1st-round pick in case they stink again this season).

A fair grade considering they had a paltry six picks in a draft that was IMO deep in the middle. Luckily, they got a can't-miss starter in exchange for their own 2nd-rounder (which they really could have used this year). In fact, for those interested in getting one of this year's QB's (a group I believe was very sub-par) had they kept their 2nd-rounder they probably had enough ammo to move up in this year's first round to grab Maye or whomever they were after in offering to trade with the Patriots. Quote from: londonblue on April 27, 2024, 04:30:35 PMSpecial teams guy and offers a bit of interior schemed pass rush together with reliable tackling but his limited athleticism tends to means those tackles are further off the LoS than with Okereke and McFadden.

A surprise to me with Mahogany, Boyd and Wingo on the board. Have to assume some medical issue with Mahogany.

london: I think his potential exceeds just special teams. He will be voted most likely to get himself injured because he's under-sized, but the kid is fearless and willing to sacrifice his body to make a tackle. Bob

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Dunleavy's draft surprises
April 27, 2024, 05:16:09 PM
On his first point... he himself admits he's not surprised, so why list it as a surprise?

Second point: the percentage of picks traded (versus picks not traded) throughout the NFL's long draft history is minuscule; as for the aspect that Schoen has been more active in the past, maybe THOSE were the aberrations and it's actually his style to stay put.

Third point: This is great news for the Giants. Unless Schoen got "aced out" by teams ahead of him and was actually trying his darnedest to get a guard (highly unlikely) it indicates that he is very pleased with his free-agency results and may also indicate that hey has reason to suspect several of his own drafted OL's are about to "come through" for the team this season. I do not believe I'm grasping at straws in mentioning the latter point.

The #Giants select Darius Muasau at pick 183, an undersized LB out of UCLA

He was a tackling machine who recorded 440 tackles in college and led his teams in tackles in each of the last four seasons.

He attended Hawaii initially and transferred to UCLA in 2022. He will be a depth behind Okereke and McFadden. Muasau had 573 special teams snaps and was a special teams MVP as a freshman at Hawaii.

I will get to his film over the next few days.

Rich: Sounds like a legitimate "pot shot" (which reminds me... one under-sized linebacker I thought would do well in the NFL - Eagles drafted him 2-3 yrs ago (Georgia Bulldogs) isn't really panning out. They over-paid. Bob

I am the one person (currently) who voted for Phillips. But as stated previously Nabors was ranked higher than 6th best player in this draft by EVERY draftnik and alleged draft expert... so it's unanimous that the Giants got more than "fair value" for Pick Six.  We shall see.  Bob

I voted with the majority (so far). Solid draft. No obvious question-marks or lemons that I can see.

I do watch a lot of college ball and am very familiar with all but one of our picks (the last one).

As for those I know about... they're each people on whom IMO it's well worth taking a chance. Money well spent.

Maybe they've planning to convert him to fullback lol (or to a "need-2-yds-RB" as others have discussed). Bob
