Big Blue Huddle / Re: Will DJ Be Better With Nabers?

No.

Someone already said it, but this is like picking Saquon all over again.

I'm going back to sleep. Wake me when we have a quarterback to build around.

How exactly was that question presented and who did they poll? I don't know how you watch the same team we did last year and think WR is the most pressing need.

Can Nabers (or Odunze) also throw to himself? Or block for the quarterback before running his route? If so, then hell yeah I want that guy at #6. Otherwise, I'll pass.

Impossible to say, as I wasn't around for Elvis or the Beatles. And I couldn't have picked Swift out of a police lineup until she started dating Travis Kelce.

The Front Porch / Re: Quotes

The study of history is a powerful antidote to contemporary arrogance. It is humbling to discover how many of our glib assumptions, which seem to us novel and plausible, have been tested before, not once but many times and in innumerable guises, and discovered to be, at great human cost, wholly false.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Brian Daboll on Darren Waller

Note the lack of enthusiasm and qualifying comments he often throws in to express confidence in one of his guys.

I think he knows Waller is selfishly holding up the team and may not be one of "his guys" for much longer.

One of the few changes to the game in the last 25 years I am actually excited for. As soon as I saw the XFL's kickoff rules in 2020 I said the NFL needed to adopt them too.

No, but that's beside the point. We've tried o-line first, QB second (or not at all) for several years now hoping DJ could hack it. He can't. I really don't need to spell out the definition of insanity here, do I?

Time to try it the other way around. Real quarterback on Day 1, offensive line afterwards.

Too much uncertainty surrounding that pick. I see him falling to a team that's desperate enough to roll the dice... and take the chance of Shedeur's much more vocal and publicized father talking to the media and generally making a huge distraction of himself. So, like... maybe the Raiders? Vegas is the distraction capitol of the world, so it's one of the few places I could see being a fit.

As a Giants fan I wouldn't touch him with a hundred-foot pole.

1. We have many holes, but the most difficult one to fill is the QB position. If you don't have the right guy in there, you don't contend.

2. The "right guy" is more likely to be in this draft than the next.

3. The Vikings trading up so long before the draft showed their hand; they're desperate to get a guy, and they probably think that guy is JJ. I'm of the same opinion. But I want him for us, not for them. Call me selfish.  :P

For these reasons, the answer is yes. I would make that trade in order to leapfrog the Vikings and draft JJ McCarthy. Admittedly Maye is the better prospect by pretty much every statistic you can measure; he ticks so many boxes that the question is more "how can he fail" than "how can he succeed?" And if we had to start a new guy Week 1, he's the QB I'd take.

Fortunately we're not in that position, and there's more to the game than measurables. Daniel Jones has enough left to hold down the fort while our new QB settles in and learns. So we can afford to take the one who I think has the higher ceiling, McCarthy.

With respect to the sheer number of bad decisions he was involved in, I would have to say it was Dave Gettleman.

Barkley had the perfect exit. He ended his season by running over the Eagles, impressing them enough to offer him a big contract. So I'm certainly not among the people bashing him. Well played, Saquon.

Horrible idea. So is the "body weight on the QB" rule. Both techniques should be legal.

Quote from: Philosophers on March 17, 2024, 05:27:11 PMGiven that JJ is the most polarizing prospect in this board, I probably hope the Giants don't draft him.
This board could polarize itself over how to hang toilet paper.

McCarthy is much more promising than anything we have now at QB, and I'll be excited if we get him.

I agree with all of this.
