Used the strategy on guess number four of sacrificing a guess to figure out which letter would be in the first spot (by using a word that had most of the possible letters), as there were more remaining letters that fit than I had guesses. I never seem to guess right on the first or even second guess in these situations, so this seemed like the sensible play.

I like this approach, in my opinion, this is the sort of strategy/decision that makes the game fun.

Agreed, and to your point that you made the other day, given this game is an ongoing marathon where your number one goal is to get as long of a streak as possible, sometimes avoiding the outright streak-ending loss and settling for something like a five is the better play than risking a loss while trying to go for a three or a four. If you see a clear path to defeat due purely to being unlucky in a process of elimination exercise, to me the better move is to just sacrifice one guess to assure yourself of not suffering that fate.

I spent more than 5 minuted trying to figure out a combo to no avail. Then i tried the right first letter ang it all fell into place. Definately sn easy but ultra tricky word.

Sorry about the streak Bill.

Assuming the usual gang has reported in, I will post a Wordle (not the NYTimes one) that I did a few weeks ago and posted about 10 pages ago because I was stunned at the options and hoped one of those words were never going to be the solution in the NY Times one because it relies on so much sheer luck. There are certain words that takes blind luck to get the right answer and this is a perfect example:

Notice I got 4 greens on my very first attempt, which is insanely unusual in and of itself, but I digress. Yet even knowing the last 4 letters of a 5-letter word, it took me 5 attempts and I finally "guessed" right out of sheer luck. There are 8 words that are all common words using those four last letters, but start with a different letter. In my case, I went through the gamut of L,F,R,S, and M. But I could've used "T", "E", or "N" which also make up a common word (TIGHT, EIGHT, NIGHT). Worse, there are two seldom used words "pight" and "wight" that fit the solution...pight being the past tense of pitching a tent as in "as the sun went down, at least the tent was pight" and wight (a spirit, ghost, or supernatural being), a term that is used in the Bible and in other forms of literature. Thankfully, those last two literal words weren't the solution or everyone would have a broken streak

In all, there are 10 word options that fit this scenario, 8 which are commonly used and since you get 6 tries - it's all about luck

Hope that makes you feel a little better Bill. I feel for you  :(

When I got the word this morning in 5 tries, I knew about this particular set of letters and figured more than a few people would end their streak. Hell, it took me 5 tries and I started with 4 letters in the correct spot  ~X(

When I have limited letters after my first 3 words, I look at my remaining letters and try another word, using s many of them as I can. I had the 'N' somewhere in the word but not as the 1st letter. As soon as I tried it there, the right word was evident. Sometimes, as you say, a matter of luck, other times a certain strategy--both work hand in hand.
