Jets give up on Wilson completely.

Not the best return

Denver will send New York a sixth-round pick, No. 203, in exchange for Wilson and a seventh-round pick, No. 256. The Jets will also pay some of Wilson's salary. He's due to make $5.5 million in 2024.

A bit less than New England got for Jones and Chicago got for Fields. If you get it wrong at QB (particularly if you give up assets to trade up for one) then you pay a severe price.

Given that the hit rate in R1 is c. 50% on QB and certainly no better when trading up for one this is the nightmare scenario that we could face this year. Is the worst case outcome worse than more Jones? That is the opinion divider!

No matter what Schoen does/does not do we will need a lot of luck on our side for once to get a good outcome.

Considering the terrible support structure QBs had with the Jets, the deck was stacked against them when they drafted a QB.  That said, I did some digging.  Apparently, the Jets were somewhat of a minority in terms of their love for Zach Wilson.  I think one could say Zach Wilson was the peak "he has arm talent" prospect (while ignoring all the other aspects of QBing).

We know what we have in Jones. Even with stellar support, I don't see it getting more than marginally better than 2022.

Obviously there are no guarantees but knowing what we have now, I'll take the opportunity at 50/50 to get someone better.

Did Lance garner the highest return with the 4th they got from the Cowboys?

I'm not entirely convinced the book is written on him but the others. Sheesh. That's a tough class outside of Lawrence.

The media has a tendency to be wise after the event. At the time they said lots of nice things and were high on him. There were caveats about size, low level of competition and takes too many risks but they were not given a lot of weight.

These were typical write-ups:

https://www.nfldraftbuzz.com/Player/Zach-Wilson-QB-BY

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/zach-wilson-nfl-draft-player-profile-byu-quarterback/

On a quick search I only found one significant naysayer rating him as a third round three year project. Most of the big name NFL Network & ESPN guys drank the kool-aid, downplaying any concerns. Brugler, Kiper, McShay all had him top ten rated and mainly QB2 or 3 and felt the Jets hit a home run taking him.

The lesson? QBs get talked up every year and drafted high. They do not always deserve it. Even if they have the talent a lot can still go wrong. Drafting a guy you "love" is no predictor of success.

Zach's Mommy is happy. Near awkward. That was a disaster in green. But no way is Payton's guy. Seriously?

Neil,

Here is a long list of graders of the Jets pick.  There were quite a few that had reservations about the young man's future

Wilson is effectively worthless. Any return is better than nothing.

The Jets Organization is trash and Wilson isn't as bad as advertised. Soon Aaron Rodgers will expose them. Another example of a young QB in a bad situation.
