Title: Giants still RB shopping
Post by: MightyGiants on March 13, 2024, 09:43:03 AM
As I mentioned yesterday, the Giants still need another veteran RB

I like the idea of RB by committee ... but I kind of hope Grey doesn't get buried again

Earth, WInd and Fire would be great

Dillon and Singletary would be a nice one-two punch.

That was one of the advantages of moving on from Barkley.  The work horse RB is an antiquated concept in today's NFL.  A pair of RBs provides the same production while providing protection from the inevitable injury issues.

This is true, especially when your workhorse is often injured you feel the drop off in a major way when he does not play

Grey doesn't have enough speed so he'd better hit the weight room.

I just have to get this off my chest. I don't disagree with resisting the urge to over pay.

However I get the feeling that they are undervaluing this position so that no matter the QB (assuming a young player we're building around) without a solid run game, they're going to get killed!

I agree with the concept and I'm glad we're moving this way....but I do think the "RB by committee" idea is more myth than reality across the NFL.  I looked at this a bit last year and was surprised to find that the vast majority of successful teams have a clear lead back that dominates the touches (Pacheco, McCaffrey, Mixon, Pollard, Swift, Cook, Etienne, etc.).  And other teams likely would have done the same if not for injury (JK Dobbins comes to mind).  I think if you were to dig into the stats you'd find the same.

Teams need an effective running game to be successful.  I prefer the committee format as well to provide alternatives and take injury stress off an individual player.  I'd like to see us get a speed back via the draft.

I'd like a bruising N/S RB or a FB hybrid.

Pacheco - 14.6 carries per game
CMC - 17 carries per game
Mixon - 15.1 carries per game
Pollard - 14.8 carries per game
Swift - 14.3 carries per game
Ettiene - 15.7 carries per game

Devin Singletary - 12.7 carries per game (only 10 starts)

Fair point but I think "lead back" or "workhorse" implies way more than 15 carries a game.  Simple reality is that in today's NFL, unlike 20 years ago, your featured back is gonna average between 12-15 carries per game.

Did anyone not see how Dillon flopped when Jones was out and was banished to the bench when Jones returned from injury? AJ Dillon sucks period. Hard pass.

The game has certainly changed and the "workhorse" label is likely toast forever.  Averaging 20+ carries a game would be shocking in today's NFL.

But go back and look at the average carries/game of the 2nd highest RB on all those teams/examples.  I think you'll find it hard to make the argument any of them run a "committee" approach- at least as I think most people use the term (ie, splitting carries fairly evenly to keep the other guy(s) fresh).

Whoever they are looking at will have to be good in pass-pro because Singletary is not.

RB by committee is the way it go for most teams anymore. It helps when you have differing types of RBs to mix and match with the adversary we face on the game day. That, and like relief pitchers in baseball are rotated to throw batters off their comfort zone or to match up to a particular batter, we need a variety of styles in our RBs. Since we got Singletary now...who is nicknamed "Motor" because of his zany moves and unreal energy, but is a "wee little guy" or what I call a "scat back", so we need a big thumper for change of pace the way we used Brandon Jacobs in days of old. Grey is kind of a middle of the style guy

A bit of a sleeper pick that I'd like to see is Carson Steele. Listed as a RB (which is the position he plays), but is built more like a FB. He's a bruiser at 6-1/245 (although he lost 18 lbs for the combine and measured an inch shorter 6-0/228 lbs), and very strong; hence, can block when not the carrier. He made Bruce Feldman's "Freak List" for the second year in a row, coming in this year at no. 21

From the Athletic:
"21. Carson Steele, UCLA, running back

He made the Freaks List last year before having a monster season for Ball State, rushing for 1,556 yards. Not bad for a guy who only had one FBS scholarship offer. The Bruins were elated to get him in the transfer portal. Steele, at 6-1, 243, has wowed his new teammates with his strength. He bench-pressed 450 pounds and squatted 685. His wheels have been impressive too, clocking 20.96 MPH and vertical-jumping 35 inches.

Steele, with his long flowing locks, looks like a fit in Hollywood. He also owns a pet alligator named Crocky-J.

'He's a dawg,' says Bruins center Duke Clemens. 'He's huge. He's like a bowling ball. I always see him in the weight room doing extra work after we're done with our workouts. You know why he is the way he is. I'm excited for him this year. He definitely can plow some people. You're gonna see that this year'."

I know one thing about him...and that is, that I'd like to have his hair...looked like my hair back when I was 20 yrs old...now I'm bald  :(

It has always been odd that Jones is was the physical back and Dillon was the finesse back in the Green Bay Offense. You would think it would be the other way around. Like you, I am not interested in Dillon.

I have no problem with Ray Davis, but what does he bring to the table that differs from Singletary, Brightwell, Gray, Corbin, Jackson, etc? I'm thinking "huge, strong, and can help block to protect the QB or to free others in a play"

I'd call and bring in Rashaad Penny for a workout...probably chep and a good 1-2 punch with Singletary + Eric Gray

What's up with Breida?

Ray Davis isn't a freak like Jacobs He is more compact with speed, vision and cutback ability. Really effective type of runner that has a burst. Would be a nice fit with Singletary. 5th year senior who never lost a fumble too. 14 tds last year.

Aaron Jones. Played very well in the last five or so games last year. GB released him after signing J Jacob's.
