For me, it also depends on the topic and for how long the topic has been discussed.  I don't read every thread, as sometime the topic just doesn't interest me and if it is the 4th/5th thread on a topic in a week or in a day, then I am less likely to read it.

I don't think it is off the table.  They still need a TE who will be a real threat in the passing game.

Remembering the play, since there were 2 out and the runners are going, if the batter/runner was declared safe at first, the run would have to count. It isn't an award of bases, but a base hit/error, why wouldn't the runner from 3rd score?

And, according to the rule that I posted (one which I never really knew about, except in theory) the umpires are allowed to change a call and basically 'do the right thing' when a call is wrong.
Sorry, misread it.  Thought runner was originally on 2nd, went to 3rd on play and then when coach told him to keep going, went home.

Why would the interpreter tell you to score the run?  Once the umpire called out, thus the 3rd out, all action stops.  If the umpires then agree to change the call, nobody should be able to advance in the meantime except for runners who are between bases being allowed to take the next base.  In this case, it sounds like after the call was made, the player kept running. He was not at risk as why would the defense care about getting a 4th out?  If the runner was already on his way home and there was not going to be a play on him if the batter/runner was called safe, then he scores.  Otherwise, he should be at 3rd.  The rule you quoted gives the umpire authority to place runners.

As far as mechanics, agreed.  I was always told, if you need help ask BEFORE making a call.  I have worked with a few guys over the years who would refuse to back you up if you asked after making the call.  It had been drilled into our group that you do not ask in most situations after making the call.  So, in that situation, I call him out. Then ask for help?  They would overturn you everytime just to teach you to stop doing so.  One situation where it didn't happen.  Runner on first and second, less than 2 outs.  I was in C position.  Ground ball hit between first baseman and 2nd baseman, closer to 2nd.  As ball passed runner, it came very close to hitting him, but I could not tell for sure and it didn't have any weird trajectory after the apparent contact.  Coach of the team in the field screamed it hit him, I immediately put my hand up to acknowledge, but didn't say anything.  Just yelled, "PLAY IT! PLAY IT!"  After the play, I asked the plate man if he saw anything and he admitted he could tell either.  Play stood.  Yes, plate guy was one of the guys who would overturn you if you asked for help after making a call.

A lesson for future umpires and maybe others also.

Last night I ahd a Lillte Leabue game with one of our rookie umpires. I was the base umpire.

Situation, 2nd and 3rd, 2 out, batter hits a sharp 1 hp to the shortstop, he makes a great play sees the runner from 2nd going by and tries to tag him. Yhe runner evades the tag, but I felt he ran out of his baseline and called him out. Now the coach comes out to ask if the run had scored (the runner from 3rd was running home). I told him it was a timing play, if the runner crossed the plate before the man was called out, he would score. We appealed to the plate umpire, who is suppose to be watching this, but he didn't see it. (rookie, remember). Common sense told me that it would be near impossible for the guy to have made it home before I immediately called the runner out, so we didn't score the run.

It is an unusually situation as there is usually a put out and then see if the runner scores instead of a verbal out.

Anyway, I believe we got the call correct, even if the coach didn't see it that way.

The joys of working with rookies.

I had a similar play, but it wasn't with a rookie.  Len, you might have known him, as he has since passed, but worked for a few different outfits in LI and Queens during his time.

FABL, College Wood Bat League.  Bases loaded,  2 outs.  I am behind the plate, 2 man mechanics, partner was in C Position.  Routing ground ball to the SS, who fields it very close to baseline.  As he grabs ball, sees runner going to 3rd so sticks his arm out to make the tag.  Runner is in front of the fielder, so from behind the plate, I can't actually "see" the tag.  Now, here's the problem.  My partner, anticipating the throw to first, turned toward first before the tag was attempted.  Now what?  I had to make the call, and I called him out.  The player was a XXXXX, had problems with him for 2 seasons, so of course he wasn't willing to accept it.  I tossed him and I think his coach actually kicked him off the team by the end of the season.

That is what I originally thought. I was wrong as well.

It is interference by the batter, even though it was unintentional. He prevented the catcher from making a play and there has to be a penalty.

Batter is out and runner goes back.

As I said, fooled me too.
Late to the party on this.  As I read, I figured it had to be interference.  However, to me, this one that is hard to judge without seeing the play. Especially in LL or even HS, where you often have very tight backstops and wild pitches/passed balls can really bounce around.  Had the ball stopped moving, did the catcher have any chance to get to the ball and make a play, how far was the ball from the batter's box?  I likely would have been wrong, but all these would come into play in my thinking if I had to make the call.

I think he deserves more time and a healthier group than he's had this year. If the offensive line can stay healthy for 19 games next year, the results will be undeniable. The dial-a-running-back needs to be dialed back. Pick one primary, have a change-up (Vereen) and keep one for backup. Cruz comes back to take the slot and relieves some pressure on OBJ.
Cruz is not going to be back.  Not at a $9MM cap hit, at least not at a $9MM cap hit.  Besides, at this point, he is a huge question mark about whether he can even be counted on.

I need another year to evaluate but I like the fact Eli's interceptions are not as high as they were. Also, considering OBJ is really the only weapon that is above average I would like to add a legit #2 receiver and maybe a quicker back to see how that helps.

I would also like to know if the only reason McAdoos offense was any good was b/c of OBJ. I mean really before Beckham the offense was a joke.
A BIG part of it is Beckham.

I've welcomed you before Coggs, but now that I know you are another fellow NYer and a HS official, consider yourself welcomed again.
I have been umpiring HS baseball in the Queens and Long Island area for almost 40 years. We probably know many of the same people.

Why don't you try and make one of our functions. We are doing a sort of tailgate and watching the Giants/Bengals game at one of our people's homes in November. Why not try and attend. Guaranteed you'll have a great time, just stay away from Jaime (LOL)
Missed this when it was posted.  Thanks for the invite (although I am late on that), but I actually went to Cincy for that disaster.  Going to Atlanta this weekend, too and most likely skipping Baltimore.  I umpired out there for a while.  Worked for Blue, so I know a bunch of the old IBUA guys and have worked with guys from Big Apple and North Shore over the years.  Blue sort of merged with AFU and I wasn't into the whole AFU thing.  So, now made the switch to mens softball.  Ump games in SI only.  Should have made the switch a long time ago.  games are about 65-75 minutes, 85 minute time limit.  Best of all, I just have to wear a mask and little soccer shin guards.

I'm going with my wife, and meeting a friend with whom I normally tailgate with at home games.  We are tailgating with a group called Bengal Bomb Squad.  Emailed the guy who runs it, said we are all welcome to come, if you can't bring anything you can make a donation and feast and drink. Apparently they are a real friendly group who always welcomes opposing fans.

For a second I thought people were getting together IN Cincinnati.  In that case, I would have joined you as I am heading out for that game.

1)  What part of the Country do you live in?  Staten Island

2)  How long have you been a Giants fan?  ~1981

3)  What do you do for a living?  Teacher

4) Anything else you would like to mention about yourself?
I have been an on and off regular at bbwc for awhile, probably going back to 2005, 2006.  Maybe even earlier.  When I say on and off, I would disappear for months at a time.  Probably why I missed this place being formed.  Also never really paid much attention to the board happenings, so probably why I didn't notice a lot of what was going on back then.

Anyways, I am a season ticket holder.  This year 2 of my brothers and I took on 6 tickets from my friend.  He had 14, was looking to get rid of 8.  We took 6, another guy took 2.  I had seats through someone else going back to 2004.   Also love to take road trips to see them play.  Last year went to San Fran in November, then GB in the play-offs and the ultimate trip.  Yup, went to the Super Bowl.  This year going to Cincy, Baltimore, and possibly Atlanta.  Wanted to go back to D*ll*s, but things didn't work out with those whom I was planning on travelling.  Most of the time, I go with my wife, but she is running the NYC Marathon next month, so can't go to D*ll*s the week before.  I played football from the time I was 11 into college, now I ref HS, semi-pro, and mens rough touch.  I freely admit I can be a bit of a football snob.  I try to keep it in check, but sometimes I just can't take it.  I also try to remain even-keeled after both wins and losses.  Anything else you want to know, just ask.
