Quote from: Philosophers on December 09, 2023, 11:49:19 PMNow, I have a hard time saying they are somehow 1-2 when Daniels won the Heisman.  He lit it up at the end.  Looks the part.

Williams' stats this year are actually a bit better than last year I think.

All I can say is what does this mean for the draft?
They both lost some shine down the stretch. Maye might have the best chance to transition into the NFL because of his football mental acuity. Williams has some red flags but he's got the most football athleticism and makes throws at a Mahommes level. I think if the Giants had the first pick it would be between Maye and Daniels. There are other teams that would jump at Calib and not look back. I think Maye is undecided about his Bowl Game but Calib is passing.

He's top heavy and has heavy feet. However his issues stem from mechanics in his steps, opening his hips early at times and timing of use of hands to control the Defender. He was clearly better on the left side. He's played in just 20 games. Was injured last year, injured in Camp and Injured twice this year. There has been a serious disruption in his progress and in the five games he's missed this season, he can't practice because of sprained ankles. Muscle memory in closed loop training takes some players longer. As far as the difference in sides, I equate it to a right handed boxer who tries to switch to southpaw. Or a batter from right to left. I know first hand and although I was able to switch hit, play racquetball equally well with both hands, and being ambidextrous, I had trouble as a southpaw. The Marvin Hager's are rare. Justin Pugh who's a gifted Athlete, was a solid if not spectacular RT but he struggles at LT, and he has excellent feet.

I want to see Neal's progress with a different Oline Coach and give him more time because of the disruptions. I don't see him at Guard but that's his next destination because I don't see them giving up on him just yet.

Quote from: Uni on December 09, 2023, 10:51:43 AMEd, I watched that play again (it's a Patriots punt in the 4th with 13:30 left) and after the deflection, it ended up skidding past the line of scrimmage and the first player to touch it was a member of kicking team who downed it. Was there another punt or were you misremembering that it touched a Steeler past the LOS?
That was it.

Quote from: Bob In PA on December 08, 2023, 03:55:35 PMEd: I think you need to refine the bold part. Do you mean past the LOS or behind it (or exactly AT the LOS)? Bob
Past the LOS, Bob.

Quote from: Uni on December 08, 2023, 02:08:07 PMOnce the ball leaves the foot of the punter and makes it past the line of scrimmage (the actual distance and whomever touched it behind the LOS is immaterial), it is in the possession of the receiving team UNLESS it is first touched by a member of the receiving team in which case the ball is live. In this case, it does not require full possession, the ball can simply glance off of a receiving player.

This also means if the kicking team touches it and the receiving team touches it thereafter, the ball still goes to the receiving team. So if the kicking team touches the ball first and the returner  tries to pick it up but ends up batting it before gaining possession, it's still the receiving team ball.
So in the case where it's punted and the receiving team deflects it at the Los and it travels past the LOS then the ball hits the leg of the receiving team, the kicking team picks it up and possesses it. Whose ball is it? The kicking team right? Just the same as if it wasn't tipped. That's how I've always understood it to be.

Last night the broadcast team called it for the receiving team because it was blocked before any possession.

Apparently, Daboll and Schoen have no issues with DJ because he's named their starter next season and it's TBD if they even draft a QB. When Eli comes out with a statement, I suspect that he was asked to support a decision that has already been made. It's ok to discuss this on a forum but I don't know what purpose it serves for a Beat to put it out unless it's to send a message to DJ that he needs to up his game.

Quote from: AZGiantFan on December 08, 2023, 12:47:18 PMI'm still trying to figure what sport you guys are talking about, since NFT means it's not about football.   =))
I didn't want it to go out on twitter and that's the only way to do that.

Dex may return this week. Also, I doubt there is any truth to the giving up on the season comment. I don't see it quoted anywhere.

Quote from: Bob In PA on December 08, 2023, 12:18:34 PMTim: Yes, that is because possession changes when the foot hits the ball whenever the punt goes beyond the line of scrimmage.

Another way to look at it... when a punt travels beyond the line of scrimmage on fourth down, the receiving team already "has possession" whether the ball is in the air, or if they catch it, or if they touch it.

So in that case, the basic rules of football regarding possession which everyone knows are applicable with NO exceptions.

Bob
A punt deflected by the receiving team that goes past the LOS according the Uni has to be possessed and then lose possession for the kicking team to recover the ball. So if the ball is tipped slightly and it travels 45 yards, then it hits the leg of the receiving team, the kicking team can't recover unless it was possessed and lost? I'm still not clear.

I still believe he can be a good RT. It's all mental.
