Big Blue Huddle / Details on DJ's neck injury
October 29, 2023, 07:35:34 AM
QuoteThe neck injury that will sideline New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones for a third consecutive game today is not believed to be season-ending, sources say, but it must fully heal before Jones can return to action and avoid the risk of a reinjury that could lead to a much longer absence.

Sources say Jones' injury has caused significant weakness in his left (non-throwing) arm. The injury is healing, and Jones has regained a lot of the strength, but it hasn't healed enough for Jones to be cleared for contact, keeping Tyrod Taylor in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Jets.

If Jones, 26, were to return before he's fully healthy, there would be a heightened risk of reinjury that would send him back to square one. So, the Giants continue to take a cautious approach to his return. The past two weeks in practice, Jones took increased scout-team reps, a sign that shutting him down is not currently under consideration. But until he's fully cleared, that's all he'll do at practice.

QuoteJones previously suffered a neck injury in 2021 -- another disc issue that led to an early end to his season. Jones has said this recent neck injury isn't as severe, and sources say it's not viewed as anything long-term. However, the risk of further complication isn't worth rushing him back.

The Jets won't have to play without Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed again this weekend.

Both cornerbacks missed the team's Week Six win over the Eagles with concussions and they remained in the concussion protocol to kick off this week, but a pair of full practices for both players on Wednesday and Thursday suggested they were getting close to a full return. Jets head coach Robert Saleh announced that they have been cleared and will play against the Giants this Sunday.

The Jets held up well without the two corners and the outing likely gave them increased confidence in the depth options they have on hand in the secondary.

The full Jets injury report will be released later on Friday. Guard Joe Tippmann has not practiced this week due to a quad injury and looks like the top candidate to be ruled out of Sunday's game.

First, there is Jones' comments, and then there is Tyrod giving comments to the press that sound like he will be starting.

@JordanRaanan
Daniel Jones said he "feels good" and is doing more each week. It's just about "passing a couple more tests" in order to get cleared for contact.

But Jones did say there are some symptoms. His optimism on not being shut down is in that it's a different injury than 2021 and there have been other players with similar injuries who have returned in a comparable timeline.

Jones wouldn't specify which players.

@DaveBrown74 sort of got me looking into this issue, as he raised a point about comparing Tyrod Taylor's performance with Daniel Jones this season.   That got me to thinking of how to use PFF pass-blocking grades to evaluate the conditions a QB had to work under effectively.

At first, I thought about a straight-up average of pass-blocking grades of the O-line (I am leaving out the blocking of TEs and RBs for simplicity's sake).   I opted not to go this route because my opinion is that it's about the whiffs and the multiple rushers winning their rep that vex a QB, rather than the overall pass grade (sort of following Daniel Jeremiah's "not tomato cans" philosophy of offensive line building).

So I thought the measure I would use is how many O-linemen had grades below 40 (which are so terrible that it makes it difficult for a QB to function).

So here is what I found

Week 1 (DJ) vs Dallas

Two below 40-  Neal (25.7) and Glowinski (1.0)

Week 2 (DJ) vs Cards

None

Week 3 (DJ) vs San Fran

Four below 40-  JMS (22.8), Ezeudu (11.1), McKethan (3.9), Lemieux (3.8)

Week 4 (DJ) vs Sea

None

Week 5 (DJ) vs Miami

Five below 40 (many partial snap counts)- BB (31.8), Neal (29.8), Ezeudu (25.4), McKethan (0.0), Mayfield (0.0)  Note-  Peart Just missed with a 40.0

Week 6 (TT) vs Bills

None

Week 7 (TT) vs Commanders

One below 40-  Pugh (16.8)

So it seems the pass blocking did significantly improve in the last two games

what position would you be seeking to shore up with a trade acquisition?

It seems that KT's 5.5 sacks have satisfied many in terms of how the 5th overall pick of the 2022 draft has been playing.   However, if you dig (using PFF because I can get the data) a bit deeper, the sacks seem to be covering up issues (admittedly, KT has played better the last couple of games).

5.5 sacks put KT on pace for a nice double-digit sack total.

HOWEVER

KT's pass rush win percentage

2022- 9.7%

2023- 6.9%

With so many sacks, one might wonder how that number could be lower.  It's because KT has gotten the sacks but is lacking in other pressures like hits

So far in 2023 KT has 1 hit

In 2022 he had 12 hits

Missed tackle rate

In 2022 it was 4.2%

In 2023 it has been 12.5%

It appears that KT still has more work to do to avoid being considered not a bust or perhaps more likely a disappointment as a 5th overall pick.

Bobby Skinner addressed this question on his last podcast.   I am not going to give his answer, as I am curious to hear your takes.   If you like, you can give two different answers.  One answer can be what he needs to do to prevent the Giants from drafting a QB, and the other can be what he needs to do in your eyes, so you don't want the Giants to draft another QB.

Of course, you can also give the answer that the ship has sailed (due to injury or performance or both), and there is nothing that Jones can do to save his job as the Giants' franchise QB.

I was looking at 5 trades that Randy Mueller thinks should happen.   The Packers apparently need a slot WR and Shepard is clearly just wasting a roster spot (while still being a pretty good slot WR)...

The Packers get a slot receiver for Jordan Love
If truth serum were given out to decision-makers on the soon-to-be frozen tundra of Green Bay, they would admit that coupling a young and unproven QB with several young and inexperienced targets might have been too much to ask. That's especially true if they factor in losing their best running back, who was supposed to take the pressure off all the young guys with a recommitted to gr0und game for several weeks. At 2-4 and having lost three in a row. the Packers have to recalculate. Their season is on the verge of the abyss, but with a somewhat aggressive mindset, it can be rectified.

The Packers have — by age — the NFL's youngest offense at 24.9 years, and at the wide receiver position it even skews lower at 23.5. Former Packers Allen Lazard and Randall Cobb are now Jets, and their experience, perspective and consistency have a value that might have been underestimated. If the Packers can find it within themselves to add a veteran receiver, or even two, I think it would make everyone's life on offense easier.

Hunter Renfrow of the Las Vegas Raiders has been in the witness protection program so far this season. Now 28, he's the same Renfrow who had 103 catches in 2021. He has a mind-boggling eight catches on 12 targets this season (both fifth on the team) and is playing 36 percent of the offensive snaps.

That sounds even crazier to me when you pull up the film and still see quickness, agility, burst to separate against man-to-man coverage AND a natural feel for finding soft spots against zone. If there was ever a case to be made for a change of scenery, this is it. I don't understand at all what the Raiders are trying to do, except to say he serves a parallel role with former Patriot Jakobi Meyers — who might have the role of "teacher's pet" locked down.

If Green Bay can get the Raiders to pay the majority share of what is left of Hunter's 2023 salary (approximately $4 million), it should jump at giving up a late-round draft pick for 2024 or beyond. I don't think the Packers can afford to wait, either, because there might be some competition. The Patriots, Saints and even the 49ers, with Deebo Samuel out, could make a case to add a skill set of Renfrow's nature if the price is right.

Turn them into an NFL QB.   I think recency bias sort of had many of us overweighing athleticism and arm strength (some people like to call his "arm talent").   Willis reminds us that while those traits are helpful, they don't ensure success.

Big Blue Huddle / O-line communications
October 24, 2023, 11:17:49 AM
Communication among the O-line is critical and seemingly was lacking early in the season (I blame coaching).  It seems that the issue is being addressed

Ben Bredeson

Q. Yesterday (offensive lineman) Justin (Pugh) was talking about how the offensive line has been 'overcommunicating' to make sure that given the different guys that were coming in and out of the line up and everybody is on the same page. Can you talk a little bit about that process and have you found that to be helpful for your play?

A: Absolutely. I think one of the biggest pieces in offensive line play is making sure that we're all on the same page and going to the right guys and accounting for our responsibilities. When we don't have a whole lot of time to gel together, like a full training camp or OTA's or things like that, we have to overcommunicate and make sure that we all know who we're responsible for and be able to be working together as a unit.

Q. Can you give a quick example of the overcommunication process? Is it like you're sitting at lunch, and somebody calls out a play or is it something more involved to it?

A: It might be something more involved. It's more so – we call it sometimes a call and a response and just making sure that everybody knows what their responsibilities are. Communicating at the line of scrimmage, coming off on the sideline and communicating there what we're seeing and any possible adjustments or anything like that and talking through it and making sure that everyone knows what the plan is and how we need to execute.
