Did winning last season, including a playoff game, do more harm than good?

At the time I didn't think so, assuming that the front office/team would understand that the team wasn't as good as their record indicated and would plan accordingly.  I think now that it may well have hurt the team to win all those flukey games.

Because without those wins, Jones is gone as was originally the plan when they didn't pick up his 5th year. Beyond that, the Giants would be committed to the rebuild.  They would likely not have traded picks for pieces (even if I still think the Waller trade was too good to pass up) and we could be targeting next season for the turnaround as they should have been all along.

Imagine a world where Tyrod Taylor is starting, the team is just as bad as it is now, only they are planning building and preparing a team for a rookie QB coming in to start 2024.  Which would then open a 5 year window where the QB is cheap and that money can be spent on....well...everything else because the team needs everything right now.

Time for Schoen and company to take a good hard look at this team and adjust plans accordingly.  The fire sale should start immediately.  Everybody but Thomas and the guys they drafted the last two years, should be made available.  Including Daniel Jones if you can find a team willing to take him.  Collect as many picks as you possibly can and try like hell to put yourself in a position to draft a new QB.

Extremely fair and well thought out post/assessment, I agree with the bulk of it, last year was fools gold and they fell for it. I still have faith in JS and Dabs, and I believe they have a plan B, and will do what they need to do.

Honestly, I don't mean this to be provocative, but who is giving up anything for Jones and that contract?

Nobody.

I think there is a lot of truth to this.  Though I hate the idea of going through another losing season after so many in the long run they may have been better off.  Still Schoen still could have recognized the wins of last year while also looking at the production of the passing offense on top of Jones's body of work prior to that to make the unpopular decision to either move on from him or just tag him for 2023 in another prove it season.

As for the fire sale I don't know exactly what you could expect the Giants to get for any of these players especially someone like Barkley who has an ankle injury.  Sure you'd love to acquire more picks but I am not sure what difference it will make in the long run.
