Quote from: Uni on December 08, 2023, 11:32:11 AMIf the punt goes past the line of scrimmage, all punt possession rules apply even though technically the receiving team touched it first when they partially blocked it. If it stays behind the line of scrimmage, then it's a free ball.

I've never seen either scenarios happen, but if they punt on third down and the kicking team recovers a blocked punt behind the line of scrimmage, it's fourth down for the kicking team at the spot of the recovery and possession does not go to the receiving team. Or if the kicking team recovers the blocked punt and then runs it past the first down marker, it's first down for the kicking team.

Technically, it's only a blocked punt it is never gets past the line of scrimmage, otherwise it's just a punt.

Uni: I like the way you explain it better than mine, but it's not really "free"  because (as you said) if the kicking team picks it up and fails to advance it beyond the 1st-down marker, they STILL lose possession (assuming it was punted on 4th down).
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Is that the case on a blocked punt only?

I know for sure that if a punt (not blocked) touches a member of the receiving team, it is a live ball and the kicking team can recover and maintain possession. Case in point, 2011 Giants vs Niners NFC Championship game.

Tim: Yes, that is because possession changes when the foot hits the ball whenever the punt goes beyond the line of scrimmage.

Another way to look at it... when a punt travels beyond the line of scrimmage on fourth down, the receiving team already "has possession" whether the ball is in the air, or if they catch it, or if they touch it.

So in that case, the basic rules of football regarding possession which everyone knows are applicable with NO exceptions.

A punt deflected by the receiving team that goes past the LOS according the Uni has to be possessed and then lose possession for the kicking team to recover the ball. So if the ball is tipped slightly and it travels 45 yards, then it hits the leg of the receiving team, the kicking team can't recover unless it was possessed and lost? I'm still not clear.

I'm guessing that the rules are slightly different based on whether the ball is behind the LOS or beyond it after it is partially blocked.

I'm still trying to figure what sport you guys are talking about, since NFT means it's not about football.   =))
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.

I didn't want it to go out on twitter and that's the only way to do that.

It is a "free" ball in that anyone can take possession. If the punt were on third down, the kicking team would keep possession if they recovered the blocked punt. Or the kicking team can recover and then run for a first down (which I've never seen happen). So in both instances, the kicking team does not lose possession of the ball after a blocked punt that is behind the LOS.

Once the ball leaves the foot of the punter and makes it past the line of scrimmage (the actual distance and whomever touched it behind the LOS is immaterial), it is in the possession of the receiving team UNLESS it is first touched by a member of the receiving team in which case the ball is live. In this case, it does not require full possession, the ball can simply glance off of a receiving player.

This also means if the kicking team touches it and the receiving team touches it thereafter, the ball still goes to the receiving team. So if the kicking team touches the ball first and the returner  tries to pick it up but ends up batting it before gaining possession, it's still the receiving team ball.

So in the case where it's punted and the receiving team deflects it at the Los and it travels past the LOS then the ball hits the leg of the receiving team, the kicking team picks it up and possesses it. Whose ball is it? The kicking team right? Just the same as if it wasn't tipped. That's how I've always understood it to be.

Last night the broadcast team called it for the receiving team because it was blocked before any possession.

Ed: I think you need to refine the bold part. Do you mean past the LOS or behind it (or exactly AT the LOS)? Bob

If the ball comes off the punter's foot and gets past the line of scrimmage no matter who touches it behind the line of scrimmage, it belongs to the receiving team when it is downed. However, if it is dropped or touched or glances off of member of the receiving team before it is downed, it is a live ball and can be recovered by anyone including the kicking team. There is no need for full possession. The muffed punt cannot be returned after recovery, it is spotted at the spot of recovery.

If the ball never makes it past the line of scrimmage, it is treated like a fumble

That would be a live ball if it first touches the member of the receiving team
