Was Bricillo under contract with the Raiders or was he free to sign with the Giants.  I'm assuming he was not under contract.  A quick look at the Patrick Graham - scroll down- had a quote by Ian Rappaport that the Raiders blocked teams because they want their new coach to make the decision about who to keep.  Hopefully, the Raiders didn't have the chance to block Bricillo.

I believe they did have the opportunity to block him and choose not to.

Yep. The only guy they have blocked from interviews is Patrick Graham, presumably because if AP gets the HC job he intends to keep Graham as the DC. They seem to have by and large done the right thing by their coaches in contrast to certain others who have so far just blocked all sideways requests pending appointing a new HC.

People are correct, he was under contract with the Raiders.  Tradition is after a head coach is fired, the assistants are given permission to look for equal jobs elsewhere.  However, teams still can and have denied permission like Graham with the Raiders and the O-line coach in Atlanta.

2022 - offensive line coach, Raiders (PFF OL rank - 10th)

2023- offensive line coach, Raiders (PFF OL rank - 10th)

Never once coached a line outside of the top 10.

Raiders were ranked 24th the year before he came on board, 10th the year he took over

Good summary.  Thanks.

While it's hardly any sort of substantive analysis but from what I can tell Bills fans couldn't wait to be rid of Bobby Johnson and Raiders fans appear to be pretty pissed off that Bricillo is gone.  Doesn't mean much of anything but it's gotta be better than fans escorting a guy out the door the way we just did with Bobby Johnson.

Thanks, looking at other fan's reactions is something I like to do, but I forgot in this instance.  Here were some of the top comments to the news from Reddit's Raiders sub

He did the best with what he had. Giants got a good one.

Sucks to see Bricillo go, given that the offensive line was one of the only consistently functional groups on the roster. Wonder if he decided to leave given that he came over with McDaniels from New England and felt out of place with how the rest of the staff was operating...

dammit.

Literally the ONE positional coach I'd hoped we wouldn't lose.

Wow this one fucking sucks.

After learning under the legendary Dante Scarnecchia on how to teach Offensive Linemen, since then Bricillo's repeatedly turned mid & late round picks (and random free agents) into certified Starters.

His Offensive Lines have always punched way above their weight.

I cannot believe we just lost him. Hopefully Mark Davis and whatever GM & Coach he brings in have a stud Offensive Line coach lined up, because that position coach is easily one of the most important ones on the entire team.

Having a great one gives you such a huge cap advantage, since you're able to either bring in nobody's or just draft Rookies in mid & late rounds and still get +play out of them. That's FIVE+ players you don't have to worry about cashing out. And your backups? They're more likely to be ready to play too.

Huge.

This fucking sucks. I hope we announce a new GM soon so that way we know which direction this team is heading.

Great stuff. I agree this kind of stuff can be useful color.

I checked it out when we traded for Waller, and it was much more mixed than this. Some were sorry to see him go, others were indifferent, and some were happy to get something for what they viewed as a fast-declining, unreliable player.

If what you posted is representative of the broad consensus, while it obviously guarantees nothing, I count it as a good sign.

These were the top comments (in Reddit, people can give Karma points for a response, and they show up first).  I didn't see any negative comments and the ones I left out were more internal discussions about the Raider's own coaching future and AP.

Speaking of AP...there's a DC job with his name written allllll over it if it wants!  Perhaps that's a discussion for another thread though.

Bricillo at this stage in the game seems like a good choice.  He's going to have a lot of high draft picks to work with so the raw tools are there.  Can he save Evan Neal's career? If he does he should have a job for life around here.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on January 11, 2024, 06:54:05 PMIt also feels like a really quick hire. That's not necessarily a problem if Daboll has been thinking/planning this for weeks/months, but I just hope there was an actual comprehensive process here, and he didn't just call his buddy that he's comfortable with and likes personally. This is a very important hire, and I hope Daboll took it seriously. Given that the last O line coach (his hire) was clearly not very good and was just a guy he knew well, I can't say I'm super confident here.

Dabs has to have known for weeks that he was going to have to replace Johnson so I think he's had plenty of time to contemplate who that replacement would be.
I'd rather be a disappointed optimist than a vindicated pessimist.
