Did Joe Schoen overpay for Drew Lock? Giants destined to trade down in NFL Draft.

Under Pickett's current contract, his cap number for 2024 is $1.98 million and $2.62 million for 2025. Lock cost us 5 million.

The Eagles are getting two seasons of Pickett compared to one season of Fields, ignoring the fifth-year option that will come into play for the former first-round picks. Fields was a first-round pick in 2021, so the Eagles would have had to make a decision on his fifth-year option for 2025 by May 2.

Philadelphia also has Jalen Hurts in the first year of a five-year extension this year, and Hurts has a cap number of $21.8 million in 2025. The cost of Fields' fifth-year option in 2025 would be $25.7 million, which the Eagles would easily decline since they are paying Hurts to be their franchise quarterback.

Basically the Eagles would have Fields for one season as the No. 2 quarterback, instead of two seasons of Pickett. Hence why the cost for Pickett was a 2024 third-round pick (No. 98 overall) and a pair of 2025 seventh-round picks -- and the Eagles got a 2024 fourth-round pick (No. 120 overal) back in the deal.

Fields was cheaper in draft compensation to acquire because of the fifth-year option deadline in play. Hence why the Steelers only had to give up a 2025 sixth-round pick to the Bears that converts to a fourth-round selection if Fields plays 51% of snaps this season.

I will admit I didnt watch very much, if not any LSU games this season. I watched most of the top 3 QBs in this upcoming draft Williams, Maye and McCarthy. I began reading about Jayden Daniels about 3 months ago. As far as the QBs go and the WRs go....it seems like the usual order being selected are for the most part, pretty consistent the order of being picked. Williams will be the first QB taken, and Harrison Jr will be the first WR taken, the only variant is what team picks what player of need.

We need draft picks, badly IMO. What if we were to trade back to 12 to 20 OR we simply trade with Minnesota?

Harrison Jr, Nabers and Odunze seem to be the top 3 WRs. My question is if we trade back to get more picks and at some point, take Brian Thomas Jr. Is he a good consolation pick? Trading with another team we might be able to get our QB and a WR.

According to tankathon he would go to the Bills at 28

Big Blue Huddle / NGT: Justin Fields to the steelers

WOW..so cheap too. I just said "no way does Fields go for a 4th round pick, boy was I wrong
Bears Trade QB Justin Fields to the Steelers for a 2025 6th Round pick that becomes a 4th Round pick based on playing time:

Hindsight is 20/20. Looking at the 2021 draft, is there anything positive that came out of it for the Giants? As of now I am looking at Rashawn Slater and Micah Parsons...am I missing something? Did we in any way benefit from the 2021 draft as of now?
#36
I am on the side of not taking a QB this year unless a QB the Giants really wanted falls to #6. No one knows how these guys will pan out (that can be said just about every draft), just continue building.

The 2021 NFL draft: Five quarterbacks were selected in the first round — Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones — the second highest number of first-round quarterback selections (along with the 1999 and 2018 drafts) after the six selected in 1983.

Three of the 2021 QBs are now backups, one (Fields) is rumored to be traded before the start of the 2024 draft. That leaves only one QB from the 2021 draft that is headed in the right direction with the team that drafted him.

Very similar in positions:

Trevor Lawrence, Zach Wilson, Trey Lance, Justin Fields, and Mac Jones = 2021

Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.

2021 had one TE listed as a cant miss TE and 2024 looks like the same Pitts vs. Bowers

As far as the WRs

Chase/Waddle/Smith/Bateman vs. MHJ/Nabers/Odunze/Coleman

If we dont get a QB this year so far this is the top 2025 QB class

Shedeur Sanders*, QB, Colorado. Height: 6-2. ...
Quinn Ewers*, QB, Texas. Height: 6-2. ...
Drew Allar*, QB, Penn State. Height: 6-5. ...
Carson Beck, QB, Georgia. Height: 6-4. ...
Riley Leonard*, QB, Notre Dame. ...
Jalen Milroe*, QB, Alabama. ...
Will Howard, QB, Ohio State. ...
Tyler Van Dyke, QB, Wisconsin.
Cam Ward QB, Miami

Sam Darnold is 26 years old. He is 6'3" and 225lbs. With Tyrod Taylor often injured, close to 35 years old and a free agent. The Giants should look at other options. I remember there were posters here pounding the table for Darnold...he is a free agent, and probably not be very expensive. I know I have posted a thread about getting a day 3 QB that we can groom and maybe get lucky, and he could be a starter or at worse, become a good back up QB. Players like Milton or Pratt.

The thing I like about Darnold is he is young; he has played in the NFL, maybe...just maybe he could come on and at the very least push Daniel Jones, challenge him for the starting QB job.

Do you see him as a viable option?

Big Blue Huddle / NFL free agency 2024: Top players
March 09, 2024, 12:23:16 PM
First question: Can we afford one or two on the top ten list? Second question: Who on the list would be a good fit?

Who are the top free agents available?

It's nearly time for free agency, and we're stacking the best players in the class. These are Matt Bowen's top 10 free agents available. Where will they land?

1. Chris Jones, DT
2. Kirk Cousins, QB
3. Christian Wilkins, DT
4. Danielle Hunter, EDGE
5. Baker Mayfield, QB
6. Robert Hunt, G
7. Chase Young, EDGE
8. Leonard Williams, DT
9. Bryce Huff, EDGE
10. Kendall Fuller, CB

According to the article Bryce Huff would be a good fit for Big Blue

Under new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen, the Giants would benefit from adding Huff to play opposite Kayvon Thibodeaux. The Giants had the fourth-lowest sack total (34) in 2023 and adding Huff could help improve that number.

I like Kayvon Thibodeaux. There are some sites that say most of his sacks were in one game with a weak O-line. I say this is the NFL, it doesn't matter. I like the kid and think he was misused in the Wink defense. IMO we need another EDGE. When healthy Azeez Ojulari has the skills to terrorize offenses....key word HEALTHY.I get the sick feeling he will never play an entire season. Never. Jihad Ward is a nice player and if the price is right I hope we keep him. I would rather go through the draft then FA for an EDGE. Dallas Turner would be a nice pick, but he will go high. We could look at Turners teammate in round 2 Chris Braswell

Looking at the age of our secondary, it's sad, yet impressive that these young men go out there every game doing what the coach ask them to. I think its safe to say Banks is going to be a huge play maker for us in the up in coming years (at least that's the hope), but what about the rest of the guys? What role do you see them having on our team? Can you see any converting to FS/SS? I thought Shane Bowen implements a lot of safeties in his schemes.

What do you think of each of these young men and what role do you see them contributing with the new defense?

Do you expect all of them to be on the roster at the beginning of 2024?

Deonte Banks 22 years old

Cor'Dale Flott 22 years old

Tre Hawkins III  22 years old

Darnay Holmes 25 years old

Nick McCloud  25 years old

Stantley Thomas-Oliver 25 years old (never heard of his ass) International player

Aaron Robinson  26 years old

With the Giants expected to add to the unit--the most likely scenario is via free agency, as to do so would likely improve the unit's chances of hitting the ground running--one such pending veteran free agent that The 33rd Team's Marcus Mosher believes could be a fit for the Giants is Robert Hunt of the Miami Dolphins.

https://www.si.com/nfl/giants/big-blue-plus/new-york-giants-robert-hunt

I think this is a very good idea. In addition to this, Jermaine Eluemunor, who plays both RT and has played Guard would be a good pick up as well. He has history with our new O-line coach

Big Blue Huddle / What day 3 QB would you take?
February 29, 2024, 10:09:27 PM
There is a chance the Giants don't take a QB this year in the first two rounds. In fact, I think it's closer to not taking one in the first 2 rounds. There have been multiple NFL ex-players, NFL analysist, and ex GMs saying the same thing, "Build the team".

Put NFL analyst Chris Simms firmly in the 'build around Daniel Jones' camp when it comes to the question of what the New York Giants should do at quarterback this offseason. There has been a constant stream of chatter about the possibility the Giants are considering moving up from No. 6 to No. 3 — provided the New England Patriots are willing to move out of that spot — to get one of the top three quarterbacks.

"What are we going to do. The first two quarterbacks come off the board, we want a quarterback, now we're going to trade up," Simms said. "The Giants have got holes everywhere. And we're just going to leave holes and 'hey, quarterback, save the day.' That just doesn't sound like the Giant way to me."

When I ran the trade up from No. 6 to No. 3 in my most recent multi-round Giants mock draft, I used 2018 precedent set by the Jets and Colts of three second-round picks to move up. The down side of that scenario is that while the Giants get a quarterback at No. 3, they don't pick again until No. 70 in Round 3.

https://www.nj.com/sports/2024/02/giants-daniel-jones-is-better-than-qb-whos-rising-up-mock-drafts-expert-says.html

For me, I personally would not be upset if we didn't get a QB in the first two rounds. I agree with Simms, we need to build the team. We are stuck with Jones and Cutlets anyways. Where I would be upset is if we dont at least take a late round QB at some point. Why? Because there is a chance, we could get lucky. This late round QB can sit an entire year and learn from Kaftka and Daboll, and if he dosent prove to be a future starter.... well then, he could develop into our back up QB for the next few years. Green Bay and San Francisco have a long history of drafting QBs in the later rounds even though they had a starting QB already. Even New England Patriots started doing the same thing. They produced Matt Cassell, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Jacoby Brissett, while still having Brady, in fact they had Bledsoe and then drafted Brady. They used some of those guys for draft capital too.

Build the damn team. I don't care how they do it: WR, LBer, CB, Guard, Tackle, RB, Safety, EDGE....crap we need everything. Get your blue-chip players with the first FOUR picks....players that can be studs, then get the best QB with one of our late picks.

These are the 3 guys I would look at. What do you think? Any of them look good to you? Do you have a guy you like?

Here is stats and film review on all three guys. The good and bad are discussed on all videos. When watching keep in mind, these guys will sit most if not all year one...and that's the way it should be anyway.

https://walterfootball.com/draft2024QB.php

Michael Pratt

2/27/24: Pratt was a consistent quarterback for the Green Wave over the last four years. In 2023, he completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,406 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions. In 2022, he completed 64 percent of his passes for 3,010 yards, 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. Pratt has quality size to him. At the Senior Bowl, he did not impress enough to boost his draft stock.

Joe Milton

2/27/24: Milton started out his collegiate career at Michigan before transferring to Tennessee. With good size and a cannon for an arm, Milton has serious passing talent for the next level. Milton can be deadly when given time, but he does not throw well on the run. In the pocket, Milton can be accurate and challenge defenses at every level. In 2023, he completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,813 yards, 20 touchdowns and five interceptions. Milton had an inconsistent week of practice at the Senior Bowl

Spencer Rattler

2/27/24: Rattler completed 69 percent of his passes in 2023 for 3,186 yards, 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. He picked up four rushing touchdowns as well. Despite the losses, Rattler played well including impressive games versus North Carolina and Georgia. Rattler impressed some NFL team sources with his arm, playmaking ability, and his ability to ad lib his team into some big plays. However, others said they are very down on him because of the turnovers and decision-making. They also noted that Rattler looked slower and less mobile in 2023.

The numbers when speak about space are mind boggling.

#45
Yes, he has no official title with the Giants, but he has been right in the past. Apparently he was friends with some in Gettlemans circle. "Tim" announced Rhule isn't coming he is going to Carolina, before other media outlets.
He also swore the Giants would not pass on Andre Thomas if there when the Giants picked, this was when other sites had Becton or Wills as a favorite. Because of his friendships in the past he still has guys on other teams that he talks to. Real or not, it is fun to talk about...

As for the Rumor:

There are two:

One: the Patriots are enamored with Marvin Harrison Jr. and will take him with the 3rd overall pick and will offer Chicago 2nd rounds and some more picks in a package deal for Justin Fields.

Two: Washington is ready to take Joe Alt and will also offer a 2nd round and some more picks for Justin Fields.

If true, this would make one of the top 3 QBs available to the Giants

Joe Schoen has to get it right in this draft. He has to. 20011 we won the super bowl; we were a team that fans were proud of. Ever since then...we have gone downhill in a huge way. Everything has gone wrong including the new stadium, the turf, the design, sucks too. Fans have enough. We blame the owner, the weapons, the QB and the coaching and all complaints are right. Daniel Jones got the contract, and some fans were happy, and some were not. I myself was ok with it. We looked as though we were trending up. I find it funny that some people say " you know we are stuck with Jones next year" NO xxxx...the good thing is the way it was structured. Basically, a two-year deal, after this season we can move on.

Say that a QB is not available at 6....what is more important? Linemen or Weapons?

A lot of people say get a lineman like Alt, but doing that would have him playing out of position. Add to the fact since the Giants drafted Jones, NO team has spent more draft capital on the Line than the Giants.

Some people say Jones doesn't have a #1 WR, then we should get him one. Rome Odunze or Malik Nabers should be there at 6.

Barkley is most likely gone, Waller maybe and Slayton. Fix the line with draft picks, but have no scoring threat? Then how good can the Giants be?

Drafting linemen has not worked out for the Giants. It is better going through FA getting linemen. Players who have shown the can play at this level. Yes, we don't have tons of money, but getting a few serviceable players are better than wasting more draft capital on busts or underperforming linemen.

Aside from Mahommes (although he has Kelce), the top teams have one or two #1 WRs. We need to do the same. Draft a true #1 WR and then in the 2nd round get a RB. Next it wouldn't hurt to address the TE position

#47
Big Blue Huddle / Chase Daniels talks about QBs
February 23, 2024, 01:09:07 PM
I find what he has to say about Justin Fields interesting and his concerns about Caleb Williams is on point. The QB carousal is very good as well. Nice to hear from someone who actually played the position.

#48
I still have faith in Joe Schoen. Way too early to judge Joe on his picks, but I can't help but notice our best players are Gettlemans picks. Thomas, Lawrence, McKinney and Barkley. I do like Joes pick of Banks, JMS and KT. As of now the only 2 players I'm not that high on yet are Ezeudu and Neal.

Dave Gettleman is "thrilled" by the success of his draft picks

https://empiresportsmedia.com/new-york-giants/former-giants-gm-dave-gettleman-speaks-out-on-his-draft-picks-succeeding-after-his-retirement/

#49
I hate the 6th pick in this upcoming draft...I really do. It's not the because of where we pick, it's the fact that the players we need will probably be gone when we pick. IMO there are only 5 players that are worth the 6th overall pick for the Giants. Any other player we pick at 6, just feels like a reach.

If you were the GM of the Giants. What would trigger you to trade out of the 6th overall pick?

For me it would be when these 5 guys were off the board

Drake Maye

Marvin Harrison Jr.

Jayden Daniels

Malik Nabers

Caleb Williams (I think he might be a bust, but if he falls at 6,I dont want to be the GM that passed on a guy that could be a franchise QB)

Before any of you guys tell me "but there are good tackles"...yes true, but the top 2 are LTs and we already have a very good one. The transition from LT to RT in the NFL isn't as easy as one might think. Just draft a forking player that already been playing RT in college. At pick 10 to 20 JC Latham makes a ton of sense, he a true Right Tackle. I wouldnt be mad if we got him with the 10th pick, but 6 is a reach.
#50
No secret our O-line needs to be fixed. Seems like we have been saying this for years. Joe Schoen clearly knows this, in fact his career could be, and should be cut short if he can't fix what his predecessor could not do either. So, what do you think of Joshua Ezeudu? Injured in week 6 this past season and from what I heard, his surgery went well. He is only 24 years old. Where do you see him moving forward? Can he be a starter or do you think he will be a backup? He has history of playing both LG and LT. Any chance he could be our RT?

Hindsight: perception of the nature of an event after it has happened. Having said that, when Joe Schoen traded Toney for a 3rd round pick from KC. Would you still have used it for Waller? If not, who would you have picked at pick 100?

Big Blue Huddle / How do you remember Jeremy Shockey ?
February 10, 2024, 09:29:57 PM
Without looking up anything on the internet...how do you remember Shockey as a player and as a teammate? For me.... again not looking at the internet for facts my view of him was good player, but terrible teammate.

I want to say he was drafted 1st round with the 10th pick. I remember he had some really good years. I want to say he was mean to Eli. Didn't want to work out with him in the off season and would only work out in Florida with other players not named Eli. Injured during Elis first Superbowl.

1-How do you remember him?

2- Considering where he was drafted, did he live up to it career wise?

3-Was he a good teammate from what you can remember?

Brandon Jacobs drafted in the 4th round. 6'4" and 264lbs. I remember watching him and seeing in the 3rd quarter defenders getting ran over by Jacobs due to the punishment they received in the first two quarters. I loved the one-two punch of Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw. They seemed to feed off each other. I would rather have two RBs that bring different dimensions as the games progresses, than a feature back like Barkley, Bijan Robinson, Najee Harris...etc. Again, Jacobs a 4th rounder and Ahmad Bradshaw was taken in the 7th.

I think...if Barkley walks (we get a 3rd round comp in 2025), then it might be a good idea to try to get a similar combo. Tall order, Jacobs certainly was an anomaly.

There were some issues to Jacobs game; he was not an every down back. Injuries, I don't think he played all 16 games in a season while playing for the Giants.  Lastly his catching ability was nothing to be desired.

Again, this is why I think it's important to have two RBs on a team that are used as the situation presents itself.

There is a kid that I have my eye on. He is big, (not Jacobs big) and he can catch. I would love to see the Giants draft him in the 4th (that's where he's projected as of now) and pair him with another RB

Big Blue Huddle / How are we at Safety?
February 06, 2024, 12:03:23 PM
How do you feel about our current Safety situation? If you were GM you leave things the way they are? The greatest question mark IMI is what to do with Xavier McKinney. How much would you be willing to spend? Can you get better or about the same in FA, and cheaper? As the GM, you would be held to the same issues as Joe has. Too many needs and too little money.

Jason Pinnock and Dane Belton are keepers for sure. Gervarrius Owens? Cheap rookie, Can one of these three be a SS? Can one of our corners Tre Hawkins III? Fill in as a safety?

Big Blue Huddle / Joe Schoen year 2
February 05, 2024, 02:13:22 PM
Jan 16, 2022 at 11:23 AM....the NY Giants web site was still tracking all the GMs that were interviewed. At this point some guys were on their second interview. The stakes couldn't be higher, the fans had to endure Reese and Gettlemen and at this point had had enough.

The Candidates were plenty and looking back some got GM positions with other teams.

Track the latest interviews conducted by the Giants for their next general manager. Candidates will be announced after each interview is completed.

Completed interviews:

2nd Interview - Adam Peters - San Francisco 49ers Assistant General Manager
2nd Interview - Ryan Poles - Kansas City Chiefs Executive Director of Player Personnel
2nd Interview - Joe Schoen - Buffalo Bills Assistant General Manager
Ran Carthon - San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel
Joe Hortiz - Baltimore Ravens Director of Player Personnel
Monti Ossenfort - Tennessee Titans Director of Player Personnel

Quentin Harris - Arizona Cardinals Vice President of Player Personnel
Adrian Wilson - Arizona Cardinals Vice President of Pro Personnel

https://www.giants.com/news/general-manager-search-tracker-giants-latest-interviews-candidates-list

To be fair, IMO you cant grade a GM until 10 years has pasted (whether or not) they are still employed by the organization. Some players may take time to show you their value to a team. Add to the fact when he got here, we were broke. Moves money around well, a solid financial GM. I feel he is really good at FA and drafting in the late rounds, the early rounds are yet to be seen.

As of now. What moves do you really like and what moves do you feel were a blunder?

Moves I liked:

Getting rid of Toney and getting a 3rd round pick (I kinda wish we kept it and not used it on Waller)

Getting a 2nd rounder for Leonard Williams

FA pickups: Okereke, Pinnock and Simmons (low risk/ high reward)

It's early but so far Thibs, Banks, Wan'Dale and Hyatt all look like promising players.

Moves I didn't like:

Not picking up Jones 5th year option or he should have accepted the rebuild and moved on from Jones/Barkley

Getting an old Vet like Wink, while having a young new coach, should have went young on DC too. Lets the new young coach mike it "his team" easier.

Neal could be on this list too, but in all fairness he was the highest rated Tackle and our other choices that could have been Cross and Icky are doing no better. Hopefully out new O-line coach can right that part.
