What's the call?

And another one that happened to us earlier this season

Batter bunts the ball up the 1st base line. He drops his bat and it is in fair territory. The bunt rolls and hits the dropped bat and goes into foul territory.

What do you have on this play?

 I have told this story several times but since you asked about Admirals, I can add this.

I had a very good friend who passed away a couple of years ago, who was on the USS Missouri when the Japanese surrendered. When he passed, he was one of 4 others who were still alive from that crew. He was a mar one who was assigned to the Missouri and all they did was train for the invasion of Japan.
So what about the Admiral? Since the Missouri was the flagship of the Pacific fleet, Admiral Halsey was its commander and was always on the ship. My friend used to relate stories to me about how Halsey used to come down and play volleyball with the crew. He always inquired about their families and, to my friend, just seemed like a general good guy. The crew loved him for that. They never knew about the bombs dropped on Japan, but at the end of a day in August 1945, Halsey came on the intercom and told all crew to wear their dress uniforms for the next day, they all knew something was up. When they saw McArthur land on the flight deck word was out that the Japanese were going to surrender.
The Missouri was the last ship to return to the USA, maybe 6 months after the war. It was the flagship and it made its way back visiting many other ports. Halsey always let the men have liberty when ver he was able to.

I can't speak of any military genius about him, but as a Admiral, he was well respected by his crew.

 I remember this night very well. As much as we were all Mets fans, and I didn't have Pic in pic on my TV. I set up a portable TV right next to my main TV. If it is within the umpire's ability to do so (which I really don't know it is), it will always be called a ground rule's double. If I am not mistaken, there is only one instance in the MLB rule book that authorizes 3 bases on a play and that is when a fielder throws his glove at a hit ball and makes contact with it. The batter is awarded 3 bases.

As I said, it is within the umpire's choice to call a DP, but that is rare. It would only be called if, in the umpire's judgment, the interference was intentional and done with the intent to stop a very possible DP. I can admit I have called it twice, in High School games, but again, you will get a major argument and you have to be positive about the so-called intent. But again, it is in the umpire's ability to do so.

 That is ONE side of the story, I have not heard the police officer's side. Why do certain people always believe the one side that sort of suits their agenda?

Anyway, still doesn't answer why whoever didn't obey the command of the officer, no matter how silly, stupid, or irrelevant.
Great, you may be in the right, but you also could be injured or even shot dead because you have no idea what is going thru the officer's mind at that particular moment.

Do you look both ways crossing a street even if you have the right of way? Do you really believe every car will stop because you are in a crosswalk and the law says cars must stop? You could be 100% in the right, but you will also be injured or dead.

No matter how silly, stupid, or whatever a police officer's command may be, you, as a citizen, are required to obey it and THEN sort if out.

 A quick pitch is illegal and considered an illegal pitch.  As Steve said, I didn't see what had happened in the video. To be honest, I have seen pitchers use a very deliberate motion to the plate and then vary it with a quicker motion. I see nothing wrong with that. The idea is to keep the batter off balance.
A quick pitch is usually when a pitcher gets the ball, immediately steps on the rubber, and pitches really before the batter gets set. You see this a lot when a pitcher, while in the set position with a man on 1st, will step off the rubber and immediately step back on and pitch. The runner and the batter will usually relax a bit when they see the pitcher step off and for him to immediately step back on and pitch, is and should be illegal. A quick pitch, with runners on, is a balk. If there is no one on it is called a ball.

Any illegal pitch is a balk with runners on and a ball with no one on.

If the pitcher lost contact with the rubber, I would think a base umpire would call that as it would be almost impossible for the plate man to see that.

Excellent Steve. Yes, the fielder always has the right of way to make the play and it is the responsibility of the runner to avoid contact or even getting in his way. We had this play TWICE today, both times with bases loaded, and both times the ball hit to short and the runner basically got in the shortstop's way. Both times they were called out and the runner who was on 3rd, who came home on the play, had to go back to 3rd. As I said before, the offensive team cannot benefit from a foul on their end. They caused the interference so the runner has to go back. The batter is credited with 1st base and since he has to go to 1st, the runner who was son 1st goes to second.

There is a scenario where the umpire seeing that the runner intentionally interfered with a fielder CAN call a double play, with the runner out and the batter also out. It is rare as you would have to anticipate that the ground ball would have been a DP, and the runner did what he could to stop it. It is a legitimate call though.
