Hate? The guy basically said the Giants will only go as far as Jones takes them. I think most would agree with the statement, as he is the Qb for the team currently. If it was any other nfl team that had a qb coming off an injury they'd likely say the exact same thing.

Quote from: BluesCruz on May 11, 2024, 07:28:14 PMTommy DeVito is the best Giants QB in my opinion

He has the right mindset and can make all the throws....also a good pocket presence

The other two will fail miserably I'm afraid before Tommy gets another shot

Meanwhile he's getting a lot of practice with the scout team
Most NFl UDFAs only get one shot to make an impression and Devito had 5 games to show everyone what he had. Daboll then kindly showed him to the bench.

As a udfa you want your team to not be able to bench you because you are playing at an elite level. That was not the case with Devito though and that's why he finished the season on the sidelines.

He needed to show he was a significant upgrade to what we had starting and he couldn't do that period.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Better or Worse

Quote from: Ed Vette on May 11, 2024, 04:05:15 PMI think overall a slightly better roster than he inherited after three drafts and FA is pretty poor. Rich posted the five year average PFF support teams and 2022 the year he inherited was the best year for the Giants.

A neutral rating for QB and RB is reasonable but I'll point out that Barkley was four years younger. I believe the DL is worse but the Edge/OLB is stronger. Together that could be a neutral for me.

The one thing you can take away is that we are investing in premium positions. The premium positions on this roster have been addressed, have they all been home runs absolutely not but Wr, Tackle, CB, Edge, and even to a certain extent Qb have been addressed while positions that aren't as big of a premium have shed their high price tags ie Safety, RB, and so on.

That's who I have had penciled in as cb2 all offseason so nor really a surprise for me as it is to others.

Quote from: Philosophers on May 11, 2024, 10:52:00 AMIt makes me question PFF.  Chargers have had much more talent on offense across multiple positions than Giants.
The problem with the chargers wasn't talent, they had talent but they were habitually injured and Ekeler hit a wall the end of 2022.

Quote from: EDjohnst1981 on May 11, 2024, 09:52:56 AMAlso surprising to see the Bucs ranked high but with a low grade for last year.

Does that mean that Mayfield out performed his cast?
The first thing I noticed is the jump that Stroud made for the Texans. 32nd, 32nd, then 20th.

I get your point though, you van see Lawrence, Stroud, and Herbert don't have significant talent around them. Kinda weird to see Burrow/the Bengals so low as well.

Qb some teams go decades without a guy. The Giants have been lucky in the past with Qbs, most teams aren't as lucky.

I think the more intuguing conversation at least initially is if Lock can come in if needed and replicate what tyrod did last season if called upon. Tyrods explosive plays and deep ball work was top notch last season.

I get Tyrod was a walking injury but he isn't an easy person to replace with his knowledge of the offense plus what he brings off the field in a leadership capacity.

Couple things

I can't wait for this mini camp to see Jiles mug a few dbs. He's a faster more physical hodgins that makes people look ridiculous in the red zone.

The Wr and Rb room has a ton of interesting pieces. Hopefully it's a wide open competition for everyone.

Still a few guards and corners on the market so hopefully they see what they have quickly and add if necessary.

Not one house hold name in our secondary which is either exciting because it's a ton of young guys who if they develop could jump start this D or nerve racking because there's no vet leader there to set the tone.

Guess they are fine with the interior being Lawrence and a bag of meh.

Heard from multiple places that Thibs and Burns will have autonomy to freestyle on the edges.

Still intrigued if Simmons is used elsewhere or as a nickel/3rd down rusher.

Tyrone Tracy getting a lot of buzz to come in and contribute immediately even as far as RB1 midway through the season. I'm ice cold on Gray so I'm fine with Singletary, Tracy, Miller, and Corbin.

Interested to see how they line up the safeties. I know Pinnock and Nubin get the nod but could see Belton and Owens getting time.

So is it Flott, McCloud, Hawkins, and Robinson competing at CB2 or do they still have McCloud wasting time at safety?

More questions than answers this time of the year.

Robinson took Devitos number 15

I remember a time where most wanted him over Golladay.

Now if we could just get some dlinemen and a CB2

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Giants sign a Qb

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on May 08, 2024, 06:17:48 PMI tend to agree. If I'm a betting man, I'd probably give him a moderate edge to be our practice squad QB this year over Tommy D.

Do I think he'll ever see the field this year in a real game if at least one of Jones or Luck is healthy? Nope.
The Luck/Lock predictive text has gotten the better of me multiple times already lol

Quote from: Philosophers on May 08, 2024, 04:07:54 PMReplace a top 10 performance at toughest and most important NFL position with a rookie likely to do poorly?  Why not just draft one and sit him for a year?
There are also 5 starting qbs slated to hit free agency if they aren't tagged.

Dak
Trevor Lawrence
Jordan Love
Jared Goff
Tua

Plus you have other backups and fringe starters.

I think it's all about Jones health. If he stays healthy and can string together consistently good games then he'll likely be back if not I think they move forward without him.

Quote from: MightyGiants on May 08, 2024, 09:16:25 AMThe part in bold is where we see things differently.  I don't do absolutes like "regardless of circumstances". I always factor in circumstances when I evaluate anything in football.  Evaluating without considering circumstances is akin to taking a quote out of context, in my opinion.
@kingm56 just the other day posted multiple examples of Qbs playing at an elite level despite having one of the worst olines in the NFL but we are supposed to give Jones a pass that he looks worse than most of the backups that started at some point last season in the same scenario.

Eli won a super bowl with a horrible offensive line but we can't even expect starter level play out of Jones? Yes the line was bad last year but that doesn't explain the 3 year arc of Jones refusing to throw down the field.

Qbs are supposed to make their team better and Jones has never done that even consistently. Pointing to a half here or a quarter here after 6 years just doesn't cut it.
