Bad news for Barkley

ESPN is reporting that the Vikings have informed Dalvin Cook of their intention to cut him in a move that frees up $14 million in cap space.

It seems as if Barkley's agent has misread the market. The days of a too young running back resetting the market every couple of years seems to be over.

IMHO he'd be wise to take the Giants offer before they realize that their initial offer now represents an overpayment in today's market.

I think the problem is Barkley's agent.  I don't see how the issue gets resolved fairly without her looking bad.

I don't think she looks bad unless she had access to a time machine and didn't use it. Her job is to get the best deal for her client even if that means having to adjust his expectations downward. He should take the giants deal and run.

If I was Barkley's agent, I would have told him to take the offer that Schoen made at the bye last season.   I would have done so knowing that there was a bumper crop of cheap running back talent coming out in the draft that would most assuredly drive down the market for the veteran RBs.  Plus, at the bye, Barkley was looking like a champ, and moving forward during the rest of the season, the best he could hope for was maintain with a risk of regression or injury being very real.

I literally posted this stuff during the bye.  No time machine was needed, just an understanding of the league and the situation.  Something every agent should possess.

Putting another good RB in the FA market should help Barkley and agent realize that they are not negotiating from a position of power.

Barkley has an experienced, well-qualified, well-respected (misogyny aside) agent. He is as involved in the decision-making as much as is she, perhaps more so. We sure as hell don't know, one way or another.

There still is all of a month (29 days) to take account of the market, the situation, and any and all developments between now and then before he decides what he wants to do for himself and what Giants posture will be.

And that is all there is to it.

Cheers!

I am curious; you say that Barkley's agent is "well respected."  That really begs the questions-  by whom? And how did you find out she was well respected?

I will point out that we have more information than you mentioned.  We have the Giants MO (at least based on the current signings of existing Giants).   The Giants re-signed Jones, extended Dexter, and re-signed Slayton.   Do any of the contracts seem like Schoen is seeking to strong-arm existing players into accepting bad deals?

Frankly, I was mildly surprised that Schoen was so generous as to offer Barkley an extension at the bye.  I was more surprised that Barkley's agent lacked the wisdom to strike while the iron is hot, as they say.

Trade him. Cook and Hunt either one would be great knowing we got picks and a reduced salary than what was initially expected.

The Giants don't have the ability to trade Barkley until he signs the tag (at least, I am pretty sure that's the case).   At this point, I think I would reach out to Cook's agent.  If he is willing to play for less than Barkley, I would seriously consider signing him and rescinding the tag for Barkley.

Both men have had issues with domestic violence. Thanks but no thanks. One more slip up for either and at best they gone for a season.

I think all you have to do is look at players deals and see that they don't add up. She reps JuJu, Fournette, Dez Bryant etc. JuJu should have gotten a mega deal after his time with the steelers but didn't, spent 1 year in KC and now signed a mediocre deal with the patriots 3yr 25.

Her big big client Stanley the LT in Baltimore looks a good deal but when you break it down in comparison to other elite LTs it's actually garbage.

LT contract Rankings and the only thing he's high on is years and total contract numbers but he's not making as much as the other guys. The deal looks good at a glance but if you Really look it's a mirage imo.

I think the agent is either extremely overrated, all of her RBs get horrible deals Gurley, Fournette just not sure what Barkley sees other than the Roc Nation brand.

They were both found either not guilty or not charged in a court of law.

No one's perfect, everyone has flaws, and every football player too. I don't want random people passing judgement on me, so I won't pass judgement on them and just focus on the football aspect.

I heard both sides of the Cook issue and I have a hard time assigning any sort of guilt to Cook.  His girlfriend admits breaking into Cook's home and arming herself with and then using mace and then arming herself with a firearm.

True Blue

Sign Cook to 1yr deal, he shouldn't cost much

Rescind the tag

Best of luck to him, we'll find another back next year to go with Gray
