Quote from: Uni on September 05, 2023, 10:35:17 AMInteresting that Lombardi is against "expanding the playbook" for Jones and instead advocates doing what they did last year, just better. It may well be that all the "progress" Jones made last year was a product of a simplified offensive design catered to his strengths, and he is no more capable of running a larger big play offense than he was pre-Daboll.

After all, it did work for Hurts.

Different situation.  Hurts was surrounded by enough talent where you could take those risks.  Giants weren't good enough or had enough talent to overcome the risks associated with opening things up with Jones.  But with the upgrade in talent plus greater expectations this is the season where the Giants will likely have to open things up with Jones to take that next step.

Gettleman had the worst tenure of any GM in Giants history.  During his tenure the Giants had the worst record in the league.  Despite coming in with the 2nd overall pick he still produced those results.  The only comparable bad GM in recent memory is Matt Millen.

Hurts is running a simplified offense that caters to his strengths. That's how he became an MVP candidate.

Another QB who is taking advantage of playing to his strengths now is Justin Fields, who is (and everyone here is going to have an aneurysm over this) generally regarded as a better QB than Jones

For me the single biggest reason Gettleman was such a failure was hubris. He refused to adapt to changes in the league that were pretty obvious. Comments like "the same things that worked in the 50s work today", or his scoffing at the concept of positional value or analytics, or his insistence that "we like the guys we've got" with the O line when it was so clearly a disaster, etc etc.

I actually think he was way worse at his job than he needed to be. His arrogance and stubbornness got the best of him. He might have been less of a failure or even half-decent had he been a little less extreme with those traits.
