We are now entering the dead zone of football talk, although I expect some interesting conversations during training camp. But for now, the board is just not that exciting.
We've talked a lot about rock bands and many other things concerning music, but I don't think we've ever talked about favorite female singers of the "Rock" genre. So...I'm not talking about Taylor Swift, or Gwen Stefani, or Shania Twain. I'm talking real "rockers". I've put together an incomplete list of female rockers who I like, and I'll rank them in my order later, should this thread takes off. Looking for the "Top Three Female Rockers". Of course, it's all subjective as people like what they like. A heads-up, I like unique voices. Gracie Slick – I saw her in concert on a surprise free concert on the beach when I was in Ocean City, MD. She (with Jefferson Airplane) was one of the undercards for the Beach Boys. She is the only woman rocker I've ever seen in concert...which actually surprises me. Interesting sub-story. Gracie and her husband moved to a nice house in a cul-de-sac in California. She changed her name in order to live incognito. She was friends with all the women in the neighborhood who had no idea who she was. Anyway, Gracie found out her husband was cheating on her, and she chased him down the street firing a shotgun over his head. Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) – one of my favorite female singers of all time. I got tickets to an Aerosmith concert in Binghamton years ago, and she was the undercard. Unfortunately, she couldn't make it because she blew out her vocal cords the week before after being named "Best Musician Newcomer" to San Francisco. She didn't take professional singing lessons and sang with her throat rather than resonating volume against the roof of her mouth. She never sang again, :( Only Elvis was able to sing from the throat and survive a lifetime (well a partial lifetime) of singing. Johnette Napolitano (Concrete Blonde) - here she is singing "Joey", a great song (tune-wise and singing-wise) but the song is extremely melancholy as she sings about a man who is overcome with alcoholism and in a battle for his life against the bottle. Kind of hits home as a good friend of mine who started drinking the hard stuff from morning til night...he died at 42 yrs old on Christmas morning a couple of years ago. I would put Linda Ronstadt at the top of my list, even ahead of Janis, due to her versatility.
Personally I don't think Carole King has a great voice, (I do love it though), but her strength is more as a songwriter.

I have to admit, Shania puts a lot of energy and theatrics in her performances. It's just her personality...very upbeat in performances and can't stand still...it's who she is. She's definitely not the stand at the mike and sing type. She has a great story though. Grew up in Canada in extreme poverty. Her father left her mother and Shania and her two younger sisters. Her mother married a full-blooded Cree, and he raised her like a father would. They were so poor that Shania would pretend to eat at school because she was afraid Social Services would take her and her sisters due to lack of food. At 8-years old, she would sing in bars late at night after alcohol was no longer served. She would make about 20.00 a night doing that and give it to her parents so they could have food. In her teen years she joined a kid's band and got recognized for her songwriting and singing as was courted by big producers (similar to child star Swift), but Shania's mother and step-father were killed in a car accident about the same time she graduated from H.S. So she put music on the back burner to raise her younger sisters until the youngest graduated. After that, she went all out into music and only sold over 100 million records, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time and the best-selling female artist in country music history. A rags-to-riches story if there ever was one. She's called the "Queen of Country Pop". But as I was trying to point out, I don't think of her as a "rocker", just a country girl having fun performing
I have a hard time ranking anyone above Stevie Nicks, but that's probably due to how much I like Fleetwood Mac, and I would be the first to say that Fleetwood Mac was never about just one band member.

Regardless, supposedly country music is the hardest genre of music for women to get into. And if you make it, you tend to go really big. It's how Taylor Swift got her start before switching to pop. And now we have Beyoncé switching to country...makes my head spin keeping up with this stuff LOL

As I said, it's all subjective, so it's all about personal taste. I'll never forget a word of advice from Simon Cowell to amateur singers trying to make it to the winner's circle. He said, "
I cannot emphasize enough, the importance of picking the right song to demonstrate your voice...because the 'catchiness' of the song, is just as important as your voice". Boy ain't that the truth. There are great singers who sang songs that never connected with the audience, and that is what is needed to succeed in the music business. Some women would make this list had they chosen the right song

Bonnie Taylor and
Pat Benatar – deep and unique alto voices with a growl. Taylor sounds almost like she gargled with broken glass before stepping up to the mic
4) I really like
Linda Perry (4 Non Blondes) as a powerful rocker's voice. Had she not destroyed her vocal cords, it's possible she could have worked her way to number one in my book. Too little released material to fairly judge her. I love her deep alto voice and her switching to falsetto during her song

Stevie Nicks – a unique voice that worked perfectly for the music she sang. Very passionate woman with a stack of gold records

Gracie Slick – a unique and powerful alto voice with a rocker's heart. I just like her. I remember seeing her on stage at a beach in Ocean City anxious to hear "We Built this City on Rock and Roll", which she sang and I loved it. Later I read that she hated that song...LOL

Joan Jett, a true rock and roller who plays guitar like a rock star and never strayed into pop or country, remaining true to her rock roots and didn't get lost in drugs and scandals. I always figured a true musician not only sang, but also played and instrument like it was second nature. I hope she gets royalties for Sunday Night Football using her song

Debbie Harry (Blondie), one of the few soprano voices I like. Adopted at birth, she never knew her real parents. But her birthdate and place of birth coincided perfectly with date/place of stories by Marylin Monroe (where she lived as a teen), who repeatedly told others about getting pregnant as a teen and being forced to give it up for adoption. For years, people (conspiracists) believe Debbie Harry is actually Marylin Monroe's illegitimate child she never knew. They say you can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice

I like Cher as well, and probably should have thrown her into the mix as she can get down and rocky with some of her songs. I saw the Ronnettes about 25 years ago on the 18th hole at the BC Open and ran smack into Ronnie after the concert. She was very down to earth and friendly. I told her that I thought her show was marvelous and that I loved her voice. She sheepishly told me "thank you" and "that means a lot to me". Smiled from ear to ear. Hard to believe she was married to that creep Phil Spector :sick: Hard to fathom how successful he was getting the Beatles going and a myriad of other singers (Tina Turner, the Righteous Brothers, the individual Beatles after their breakup, etc.) before committing the most horrendous murder. The movie "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", really tells the story of all the big wigs in the music industry and film industry during the 60's if one keeps track, and even the Manson murders...and of course, Spector is right there in the middle of it. It's like the true history of Hollywood...but I digress
As far as best voice, Mama Cass (Ellen Naomi Cohen, known professionally as Cass Elliot) hated the name "Mama", but had the voice of a diva in an opera...for which she aspired to until her untimely death. Unbelievably great voice, with a unique quality that sets her apart from all female voices. Cher also has that unique sound that no can reproduce. Personally, I'd have to say Whitney Houston is probably the top voice for females, but again, it's all subjective. And I'd be remiss not to mention Mariah Carey with her six octave range...which is utterly ridiculous
Whitney sang the greatest love song ever sung...IMO. This song still brings tears to my eyes, which is the mark of once-in-a-lifetime singer, who can create such an emotion. It was especially dramatic as it was pumped over the loudspeakers as her casket was rolled away down the church aisle at her funeral :'(

There's a lot of female singers that are very good and also "rockers", but have such a small sample size, or picked the wrong songs to showcase their voice, or simply didn't live in the U.S. or U.K. A couple of examples are Martika (small sample size) and Nena (German songstress)
Martika...really gets down at the end when she throws herself to the floor hammering the stage with her fist and quite a screaming performance. Girl has pipes...can really croon with the best of them
This song by Nena was played a lot when China was sending spy balloons over the U.S. and we shot them down. This song is about 99 balloons being released from a party and the German Army was called to shoot them down thinking they were being invaded...LOL. She's far more pop than rock, but unique. She also released this song in English, but it became a hit in the U.S. as it was sung in it's original German. I always imagine a fat slob sitting outside a gas station picking his teeth and saying, "yup...I'd do her"...LOL. Something an old girlfriend said to me as the height of insult as she was getting ogled

Taylor Momson. If you've never heard of her, she is the cute little girl that played Cindy Lou Who in the Grinch movie with Jim Carey many years ago. Well, she now leads a rock and roll band called The Pretty Reckless and she's got a great set of pipes (for rock n roll anyway).
Another woman I wouldn't call a "rocker" (more of the disco era) with incredible pipes - Amii Stewart, who never became particularly famous, but she could belt it out with the best of them. I remember years ago watching
American Idol and thinking most of the contestants were pretty good. Then one day, driving down the highway, this song came on, and it amazed how much more talented this girl on the radio was compared to those competing on American Idol for a million dollars and a contract...yet, she had a really short career (as far as I know). Anyway, listen to her hit controlled high notes at around 2:35 or so. That ain't human :o

She should redo that old song, "They're coming to take me away, ahee, ahah". And again...not rock, but pop
I know more about pop music than most men my age because I lived with a woman for seven years who was 33 years younger than me, and I let her choose the music we listened to in the car. I'd come home at midnight after being out with the boys and I could hear my stereo blasting from outside my house, and I'd find her dancing on my coffee table, using a hairbrush as a make-believe mic, singing along with Shania Twain. I actually miss that part of her :(
