First off, to Jolly Blue Giant, if you have already highlighted this game, I apologize for not remembering. In any case, I have been getting mildly bored with Wordle. I still do it everyday, and I still don't mind doing it, but I feel like I'm going through the motions to some extent. Someone recently recommended "Connections" to me, which is also a NYT game. I recommend checking it out. It's enjoyable and a bit tricky, but it's very engaging. Here is the link. I'm curious to see if others like it.

I've done a few of the practice ones, and they're enjoyable. Like Wordle, you have to think about words, but this game makes you think out of the box a little more and consider meanings and other similarities. Today was my first day doing the official one, but after doing four or five practice ones I'm definitely a fan so far.
There is a definite learning curve. It's not easy.

The curveball factor in this game is huge too. They clearly throw you traps to try to get you to connect words that seem connected at first but actually aren't the right answer in the puzzle. That adds a tricky, fun element to it.

BTW one technique I'm learning (the hard way) in this game that seems to help is when I have two or three words I feel are very likely connected, but I guess the fourth one wrong, rather than continuing to try to find one that fits that group, I temporarily abandon it and look for other groups. I think if you get hung up on just one angle and try to solve it you risk burning multiple guesses, and it's possible you may be on the wrong track altogether with that grouping.

I have done maybe 12 or so of these puzzles now (three real, maybe 8-10 practice). I definitely think the above is a clear pitfall, and I have crashed and burned a number of times doing it. So now if I get one wrong guess initially I'm on to a new theme right after that, and this tactic seems to lead to better results.

Never heard of focus mode
This all comes down to one person's perceived connection. There are other correct combinations. For example Ring, silent, vibrate, and connection are a better combination. Drive motivate spur and spark can connect. So the best way to approach this is to write them all out so they all have a chance to work.

I'll say this right now. After getting through yesterday's without a single wrong guess, I'm looking at today's (spent about 3 min so far), and I haven't the vaguest clue of how to get started. I better get another cup of coffee.
Sometimes it's just about seeing that first group. The whole thing is less daunting when you have one foursome salted away.
I thought this was a lot trickier than yesterday's, personally. It took me a while to see that first solution even though I guess it wasn't that complicated.
Another thought is they should probably start you with 20 words, not 16. Have four words be totally random and not part of any sequence. That way you actually have to get the fourth guess. The way it is now, you only need to solve three out of four and then you're done. That said it's probably hard enough as is.

As stated the other day, I think this was a matter of getting some reps in. Seems clear people are much better at the game than they were on day one.

I got a perfect score today. I am starting to identify a tactic. Previously, I would work on the first pattern I identified. Now, if I don't feel fully comfortable with a given patter, I continue looking to see if there is one I feel better about. Obviously, the more choices you can take off the board, the easier the remaining groupings become.

Totally agree. You can't get too hung up on one pattern/theme that you're not totally sure about. Especially if you fire a shot at it and get it wrong. What I'm finding is if you fire a second shot at that same pattern but you've subbed out one word, you're almost always wrong on the second guess because the whole theme is usually wrong to begin with, and it's actually something completely different. If I'm not feeling very sure about a guess I just keep looking and thinking. Eventually something better comes to me.
The problem is I only have so much time I can spend on these games early in the AM. I think with this one if one is really plaguing me I'll just put it aside and revert later in the day. I never do that with Wordle. I'm actually pretty bored of Wordle and am thinking of stopping (or at least pausing for a while).

Yeah, I agree. I couldn't even get three words to match up and when I saw the final solution I thought, "that's beyond a stretch". I doubt there's anyone out there that has much of a streak with this game

Thanks, Tim...first time in my life I've ever heard about how records are made out of wax cylinders. At least I got something out of playing the game I rarely win...and learning anything new is a good thing I guess
Personally felt today was one of the more straightforward ones I've seen since starting doing the puzzle a couple weeks back. The first three took a minute or two. Admittedly the fourth one I would have struggled to get on my own, but thankfully all you need to do in this game is get three.

I had the category correct for the blue group but had only heard of one.
Also, Dave had mentioned earlier in this thread that the 4th group (whatever words are left after getting the first three) is essentially a gimme. They should add another word to the mix to force players to find the correct 4th group. Had they done that, I would have had to work harder to figure it out.

I don't think the game is ever "easy" the way some Wordle games can be. I did think today was a bit easier than some of the ones we have seen prior to today in recent days. For me at least.
The trick of having a category that looks obvious is one we have seen them do before. Personally I think the best approach when they throw these at you is to try to completely avoid that category initially. If I can knock off another foursome somewhere else, that tends to help. Also, by looking at other words, you may find three that work together and the fourth one is clearly one of the ones in the big category (in this case the cars).

That was the first grouping I saw. Then, I separated the no kidding car companies out.
Of the three that were left, Wilson was the only one that matched up with them. Figured those three weren't in the car category after all.

Remember... the ambiguity is part of the game. All 4 groups need to be satisfied. Sure, you can substitute GM for BMW but then what other words would you combine with BMW to form a logical group?

That's right. It's not a game of absolutes. Some words have multiple meanings. In this game, that is deliberately meant to throw you off.
There is a tricky word in this one that seems like a simple word but has another meaning that I just happened to know. That was fortunate and helped me a lot this morning.

I got flat out lucky on this one. I thought this one was much harder than a couple of the ones I have struck out on since starting this game. The first two I was able to get (although the second one wasn't easy). The third one was a stone cold guess. Obviously that gave me the fourth one automatically, but no way I would have figured that one out either. Brutally tough one today in my opinion. Kudos to anyone who gets this by knowing all of them.

One thing I've started doing to make this exercise a bit more robust is even after I get the first three right, I try to make sure I know why the last four are connected before I just click all of them and submit them. Obviously either way you're still going to "win" the game, but I figure why short-change myself that part of the exercise, especially given the last one last is more often than not the trickiest one. To just hand yourself those last four when you have no clue why they're connected seems like short-changing yourself out of part of the mental workout, which is kind of the whole point of doing this.

Another one that I found challenging.
The hardest ones of these are often the ones where there are six or so words that clearly fit. You know you have the right category but you don't know which ones to eliminate. The best strategy in those situations seems to be to just forget about that category and find another category. That will often take away one or even two of the six words of the other category, which helps out a lot. They definitely try to f--- with you with that trick though.

I don't know how some of you figure out these combos but I do agree with Rich in that some days (like today) even when I see the answers I still don't see how anyone can find the answers. I agree that the puzzles seem to be getting, not harder, but more diminishing in quality and some of the combos are so far-fetched, I give tremendous credit to Ed who just seems to nail them every day. I do get them every once in a while and feel good about that, but mostly I fail and fail miserably. I try though.

It's rare that I get them in four tries. Often the better match is The one I get wrong, like today. But sometimes you have to give up on a combination because there are words that fit a different line of thinking.
Grocery store aisles could have been supermarket departments and I chose fish over snacks first and was wrong. Yellow and Green was obvious after walking away several times. It wasn't obvious at first.
I rarely get purple like today I didn't until it came up.

I found this one really hard. I probably should have failed. I got the blue one on a stone cold guess. I just picked those four words basically because they were all adjectives that might describe a person. Never figured out the connection. I think that one was a little silly. It seems like there are different people creating it. The last couple of times it's been reasonable but then they put out obscure and misleading games. One of the keys is to simultaneously create two to three strings at a time before jumping to a conclusion. I don't write them down, although that would help.

I get all the criticisms of the game and don't really disagree with them, but I still enjoy it as I consider it a challenge, and it makes you think out of the box sometimes a little. I didn't get purple before the others but when it got eliminated down to that four I knew the connection immediately.
We definitely have the easy guy on his shift right now. Will probably get harder again by early next week.

It's tricky when multiple words have more than one meaning. Although we are also getting better at the game. This game doesn't have a streak like Wordle does. Most people quit playing Wordle every day after they lose a long streak. I may decide to do that too. I'm at 317 days.

Definitely impressive.
I stopped doing Wordle mainly because I only have (or want to spend) so much time a day on these games, and Wordle was starting to get tired for me. Once in a while I still do it, but I don't bother posting.
Waffles I stopped doing altogether as it was just too easy to bother. There's basically almost zero chance of striking out in that game, which to me makes it not interesting. I like games where I have a legitimate chance of failing. Getting something right every day without fail gets boring after a while. I know the bigger waffles or waffles deluxe or whatever they call it is tougher, but it's the same idea.
With Connections, you can definitely get stumped. The only negative is sometimes when you get stumped it's because the connections are lame or you got something right but it wasn't right according to them. Still, this is by far my favorite of these games.
With strands, you're always going to get home, but it's down to how many hints you use. Getting it right with zero hints is satisfying and usually not easy as the opening tip to the category is often very ambiguous and you have no clue what you're looking for.
