An Opening Day sellout and a Yankee win (6-3).

One down and another 161 games to go for this regular season.   :ok:

On my NC Time Warner TV at 1:00PM today the Yankees are on ESPN for Opening Day. CC is the starting pitcher. First time the Yankees are opening in March.

Of course, all depends on the weather.

Still worried about the Giants and their season, but right now it's Opening Day again for my Yanks. I've watched then for over six decades and I can't wait for 1 PM to roll around.  =D> =D> =D>

GMO,

I agree absolutely with your opinion about Andy.

As I said above, "you were the second best lefty I ever saw wear those great Yankee pinstripes".

Of course, Edward Charles "Whitey" Ford was the best lefty I ever saw pitch on the Yankees. Actually, he was the BEST Yankee pitcher I ever saw over the past SIXTY years.

"Ford won 236 games for New York (career 236-106), still a franchise record. Red Ruffing, the previous Yankee record-holder, still leads all Yankee right-handed pitchers, with 231 of his 273 career wins coming with the Yankees. Other Yankee pitchers have had more career wins (for example, Roger Clemens notched his 300th career victory as a Yankee), but amassed them for multiple franchises. David Wells tied Whitey Ford for 13th place in victories by a left-hander on August 26, 2007.

Among pitchers with at least 300 career decisions, Ford ranks FIRST with a winning percentage of .690, the ALL-TIME highest percentage in modern baseball history.

Ford's career winning percentage cannot be attributed solely to being on a good team: The Yankees were 1,486-1,027 during his 16 years; without his 236-106, they had 1,250 wins and 921 losses, for a won-loss percentage of .576. Ford was thus 11.4 percentage points higher than his team's record, independent of his record.

Ford's 2.75 earned run average is the LOWEST among starting pitchers whose careers began after the advent of the Live Ball Era in 1920. Ford's worst-ever ERA was 3.24. Ford had 45 shutout victories in his career, including eight 1-0 wins.

World Series and All-Star Games Ford's status on the Yankees was underscored by the World Series. Ford was New York's Game One pitcher in 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1963, and 1964. He is the only pitcher to start four consecutive Game Ones, a streak he reached TWICE.

For his career, Ford had 10 World Series victories, more than any other pitcher. Ford also leads all starters in World Series losses (8) and starts (22), as well as innings, hits, walks, and strikeouts. In 1961 he broke Babe Ruth's World Series record of 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. (The record would eventually reach 33 2/3. It is still a World Series record, although Mariano Rivera broke it as a postseason record in 2000.) Ford won the 1961 World Series MVP. In addition to Yankee Stadium, Ford also pitched World Series games in seven other stadiums:

Ebbets Field (1953 and 1956)
Milwaukee County Stadium (1957 and 1958)
Forbes Field (1960)
Crosley Field (1961)
Candlestick Park (1962)
Dodger Stadium (1963)
Sportsman's Park (1964)
Ford appeared on eight AL All-Star teams between 1954 and 1964."

WHITEY, THANKS FOR THE GREAT MEMORIES!

"YANKEES ANDY PETTITTE TO ANNOUNCE RETIREMENT ON FRIDAY

Pettitte, 38, finishes his career with a 240-138 (.635) record and
3.88 ERA (3,055.1 IP, 1,317 ER) in 479 starts over 16 Major League
seasons with the Yankees (1995-2003 and '07-10) and Houston Astros
(2004-06). He is one of just 26 pitchers all-time to complete his
career 100-or-more games over .500. Of the 19 Hall of Fame-eligible
pitchers who have reached that plateau, only "Parisian" Bob Caruthers,
who went 218-99 from 1884-92, is not enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame."

Believe you had at least one more good year left (especially with a good relief core), but it's your decision. Just enjoy those  WS Championship rings you now have.

And from a sixty year Yankee fan, "thank you", you were the second best lefty I ever saw wear those great Yankee pinstripes.

(Pardon my French!)

An Old Jewish Man:

A female CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time.

So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site.

She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.

"Pardon me, sir, I'm Rebecca Smith from CNN. What's your name?

"Morris Feinberg," he replied.

"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?"

"For about 60 years."

"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"

"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims."

"I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop."

"I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."

"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"

"Like I'm talking to a f@#kin' wall."

I think most of us must have some Irish in us (my wife's name is Catherine Helen, her father was a large Irish homicide Lt. in Queens, NY and the family enjoyed drinking a hell of a lot, with cousins and other relatives who also were cops, firemen, a nun, a priest and yes, alcohol was a heaven sent drink).

IN AN IRISH FAMILY---

WHAT IT MEANS TO BE IN AN IRISH FAMILY

1) You will never play professional basketball.

2) You swear very well.

3) At least one of your cousins is a fireman, cop, bar owner, funeral home owner or holds political office. And you have at   least one aunt who is a nun or uncle who's a priest.

4) You think you sing very well.

5) You have no idea how to make a long story short!

6) There isn't a big difference between you losing your temper or killing  someone.

7) Many of your childhood meals were boiled. Instant potatoes were a mortal sin.

8) You have never hit your head on a ceiling.

9) You spent a good portion of your childhood kneeling in prayer.

10) You're strangely poetic after a few beers.

11) Some punches directed at you are from legacies of past generations.

12) Many of your sisters and/or cousins are named Mary, Catherine or Eileen  and there is at least one member of your family with the full name of Mary Catherine Eileen.

13) Someone in your family is very generous. It is more than likely you.

14) You may not know the words, but that doesn't stop you from singing..

15) You can't wait for the other guy to stop talking before you start talking.

16) You're not nearly as funny as you think you are,  but what you lack in talent, you make up for in frequency.

17) There wasn't a huge difference between your last wake and your last keg party.

18) You are, or know someone, named  Murph.

19) If you don't know Murph then you know Mac. If you don't know Murph or Mac, then you know Sully.  Then you  probably know  McMurphy.

20) You are genetically incapable of keeping a  secret.

21) You have Irish Alzheimer's, you forget everything but the grudges!

22) 'Irish Stew' is a euphemism for 'boiled leftovers.'

23) Your skin's ability to tan not so much. (Only in spots!)

24) Childhood remedies for the common cold often included some form of whiskey.

25) There's no leaving a family party without saying goodbye for at least 45 minutes.

26) At this very moment, you have at least two relatives who are not speaking to each other. Not fighting, mind you, just  not speaking to each other.

And once in your life you should experience a REAL Irish wake!

"my father in law is Chuck Bednarik"

One of the greatest Eagles of alltime (a Hall of Famer). Probably one of the last living Eagles with an NFL Championship (1960).

And for all you younger ones, Mr. Bednarik was the player who (legally) tackled our great Hall of Famer Frank Gifford and knocked him out of football for about 18 months.

Mcwilli, you have one hell of a father-in-law!

Welcome to our site.

I too just expressed my sympathies to his family via the guestbook Vette posted.

I had not read about Evan until a few minutes ago. I'm just shocked and extremely upset and sadden. My condolences and prayers to his family.

God Bless Evan.
