I have talked about the word on occasion, but I like to wait until after 4 or 5 o'clock so that it won't be a spoiler. It seems most people have done it in the morning and Lenn is usually the last to post so that is my clue that most people have answered. Tough to wait until 5:00 when you want to discuss the word of the day

Fair enough, although what is the point of coming to this thread on any given day before you have done the puzzle that day?

Excellent point. I suppose if you wanted to talk about the word the post should look like this:

SPOILER ALERT

(Without posting the actual word) The word today was tough because....etc., etc.

Just my strategy today. I had a yellow D and a green E. I figured there had to be another vowel and since all others were grey there had to be another E, but where. I again tried to use some unused letters and got no where, but I knew my D couldn't be 1st, 2nd, or 4th. I knew the second E had to be at the end, so I spent time arranging and rearranging until it just popped out, Once I saw the W, E and knew the last letter as an E, then it was easy. But it did accomplish the original intent, to get the brain working in the morning.

Len,

I just had the E on end.  Like you, I figured that had to be at least one more E (maybe two in a possible XeeXe configuration.   Otherwise, the thing I needed was two consonant combos to create to fill in the spaces along with the two Es (I was also thinking about the other configuration).  I play Words with Friends, and "edge" is a handy word that I use often and I saw I had the letters.  So I thought about "edge," and then with the other not ruled out a letter, the answer was there.

Like you said, this was a chance to really give one's reasoning skills a good workout

I really struggled to come up with today's word. I started this morning before 7 and tried several times throughout the day.

I know some of you use probing words to eliminate/reveal other letters and don't always use a yellow or green letter from earlier guesses. I prefer to play the hard mode way and use what was either yellow or green. After eliminating all Wheel of Fortune letters and vowels (except 'Y') I struggled to come up with a legitimate guess.

Along the lines of what @DaveBrown74 was talking about, I did not open this thread because I didn't want any potential clues.

I don't mind that idea. We can set a time, say 10AM. After that, the word can be explicitly discussed. If we haven't played by that time, just know the word will be revealed at that time.

I took 5 because I was lazy.  I guessed a word that I doubt it would be because it would give me two more letters and help me place my yellow letter

I should have gotten it in four. I left a letter I had out by mistake.

First off what a bunch of old men we are, in my younger days waking up at 10 or later was the norm for my days off.   =))

Second, I am good with the spoiler rule

Third, I use the walk away rule for non-urgent IT problems when I find myself stumped.  Walk away, relax, take your mind off the problem and often the solution will just hit you.

Agree about the walk-away rule. I used that today after guess number two.

I struggled for about 15 minutes after putting in my first attempt. I had two consonants (1 green, 1 yellow) and considering that I knew the 4th letter, there was only one letter that made sense to end the word following the second to last letter. Then I thought....and I thought...went outside, had another cup of coffee...thought some more...came back and said to myself, "nothing make sense". And then it hit me that there was one word I could come up with that fit the criteria of the letters I had and the letters that were left and at least it would narrow it down for me and "voila". Surprised myself

Nicely done. While this was not some overly obscure word, the specific construct of it made it mildly challenging I though. So to get it in two or three without some lucky first guess is a very good outcome.

My first guess yielded absolutely zero, so I don't feel at all bad about getting it in four, but it's always a nice feeling when you nail a two or a three in this game.

Did you change your starting first word?

MILD SPOILER ALERT:

Yes, I stopped using SERAI as my starting word and have gone back to ADIEU. I know the analytics state that ADIEU is not a very good word, but for whatever reason I just feel like I have a better chance of getting up and down in four or even three when I have maximum possible vowel info on the first guess. I just see the "bones" of the word earlier this way. I may experiment again soon, but I was getting too many 5s with SERAI, and once I switched back I went back to getting mostly 4s and some 3s.
