Big Blue Huddle / Re: NGT - Wildcard Weekend Games

The answer to the OP question might depend upon the weight given to a defensive squad keeping the opponent's points low vs. the defensive squad scoring points themselves. Lot's of other factors, too.

Regards.

Saturday wrap-up: Chiefs and Texans move on. Two games in which the QB was well worth watching. Some fine defensive play, too. Ol' Man Upset was in the stands in Texas. I submit he has more effect on a game than does Ms. Taylor Swift.

[Quoting myself from another source:]

"The camel's nose is well into the tent. The NFL suits are probably already salivating over the dollars to be had by 'peacocking'* the Super Bowl in 2025 or 2026.

"This poor old country mouse retains the ability, early-learned, of visualizing a game presented on radio. I've already dusted it off and warmed it up.

Big Blue Huddle / The Giants 2024-5.
January 08, 2024, 07:33:18 AM
The final game of the 2023-4 season's over. We had a chance to watch some fine play and a Giant win over a faltering team. The Giant quarterback shuffle added interest. But winter has come.

The Giant team we'll see fielded for the season now aborning will be significantly different. Free agency will tear damaging holes in the roster. They will be difficult to fill.

Meanwhile, we can enjoy the hot stove league of speculation and conjecture.

Let's get the QB issue settled. At the end of the regular season, the only thing that matters for a team is the number of games won. There have been 5 Giant wins. Who won how many? 'Nuf said.

Just as if not more important is team discipline. That means that players have to play their position according to the rules of the game*. One of the rules deals with holding. It's rather well-defined. Using yesterday's game as an example, what would the score have been if there were no Giant holding penalties?

Happy New Year! Go flag-free, Big Blue!

* Yeah, yeah. I know. If the opposition's receiver is about to make an almost guaranteed catch and has nothing between him and the Promised Land but people-free greensward, . . . ' That exception proves [Ed.: 'proves' originally, meant 'tests',] the rule.

Mr. Thomas DeVito, viewed dispassionately, is a work in progress. Thus far we've seen him breathe life into a moribund team and win some games against mediocre opposition.

We've no real grasp of what would obtain were he given a front five that can maintain a pocket for 5 seconds, several more games-worth of experience under his jersey, and a play-caller imbued with a deep knowledge of his strengths and weaknesses.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on December 26, 2023, 07:30:46 AMWhich of the other 31 NFL teams do you honestly believe will consider with a straight face trading for a middling at best QB who played utterly horribly in his most recent year, is coming off an ACL injury as well as his second serious neck injury, has had multiple other serious injuries, and has a $47mm cap hit in 2024 with a total of $69.3mm in dead cap remaining on his $40mm a year contract?

Hi, DaveBrown74.

I don't think that the New Jersey Giants would realize any large amount of cash from his sale, but any's better than just paying him for the rest of his contract.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Yesterday's game with the Eagles showed two QB's who can take the club to a solid, mid-level place next year. Coaching for Mr. Thomas DeVito and judicious use of Mr. Tyrod Tailor will get that particular dog walked.

Mr. Danial Jones should be sold off to the highest bidder ASAP. That will put some bread in the salary jar.

Drafting should center on a couple of receivers who can take some of the pressure off Mr. Saquon Barkley. Even his superb durability has a limit.

Finally, see if there's any really weak spot in the defensive squad to fix.

The New Jersey Giants have nothing to feel ashamed about after losing to the Eagles. Were there weaknesses? Yup. But they're identifiable and fixable through coaching. Big Blue is on its way to becoming a solid, mid-level team. This old armchair observer's looking forward to the rest of the regular season games. Next year should see the Giants in the play-offs. There, who knows?

Time was, back in the day, predictions for a game were simply who would win and who would lose. From time to time a hearty [Ed.: Or foolish,] soul would predict by how much.

Now, we've got all manner of betting odds posted, probably including whether the field goal kicker will have to tie a shoelace before kicking the ball. It's tough for an old-timer like me to even figure out who's predicted to win a game amid the plethora of numbers.

That said, the Giants appear to be roughly 2 TD underdogs for this game. To this I say, "Go, Tommy Cutlets!"

Why put the knock on the Jets? They're far more true to form than any number of teams I could mention. We know, at the start of a season, that the Jets will continue to bumble along, losing enough games along the way to insure they they're playing golf in sunny climes on Super Bowl Sunday.

Then too, they're endlessly entertaining. At each and every game there's the possibility that they'll come up with yet another new way to blow it or, and this is the gold ring of watching, blow the entire season. Like, this one in just 4 snaps! What team, in the entire history of pro ball, can equal that?

So don't pity the New Jersey Jets fans. They know, based upon over a half-century of evidence, just what sort of a team they root for.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: DeVito to start again XMas Day
December 19, 2023, 06:22:50 AM
Now, I'm probably the first to admit that the Mr. Thomas DeVito near-mania among New Jersey Giant fans and the sports commentators on ESPN and other outlets was just plain unrealistic. Mr. DeVito, like us, is fully capable of having a bad day. Even a really bad day. Like, er, well, you know, Sunday against the Saints.

It happens, right?

That doesn't mean that Mr. DeVito isn't still improving as a QB. It doesn't mean that the ability he apparently has to inspire a down-in-the-dumps team is all used up. Remember what Pandora found at the bottom of the box.

We've a few games more to go this season. There's also next season.

Some days are diamonds, some days are stones. [Lyric by Mr. John Denver.]

Yesterday's game was a particularly ugly boulder. It's a rare team indeed that doesn't have one once in a while.

Meanwhile, someone in the Saints organization did a great job of tape-viewing and weak-point spotting. It was almost as if the Saints had a man in the huddle and a direct tap into the Giants defense coordinator's line.

There's always a next game.

Replying to the thread title.

If we measure by wins, Mr. Thomas DeVito's first win set the fluke vs. sustainable percent at 50.
Two wins in a row changed it to 75%
Three and it's upped to 87%
If today's [12/17/23] game's a win for Mr. DeVito, the sustainable value rises to a whopping 94%.

Somewhere along the line, and five wins in a row would boost the probability to 97%, you would have to conclude that Mr. Thomas DeVito's the real deal.
