Jones was good. Everyone else made the mistakes that lose games. If Nabors makes the catch he has to make, the Giants probably win. Can't make an extra point. Regardless, for an Offense that only had 22 minutes on the field, was 3 for 3 in the red zone, and was running the ball at 6 yards a carry, the statistics for Jones were naturally low.

Translation: Jones was not the problem. This was a game of possessions. Washington had one more than the Giants. Singletary's fumble was the problem. The Defense's inability to get off the field was the problem. The Defensive Penalties were a problem. The missed opportunities for an extra point and two-point conversions were a problem. It looked like Jones and the Giants could have put up 30 on Washington without much trouble. Unfortunately, they rarely had the ball, and when they did FGs were not an option.

I was encouraged by what I saw from Jones. The result was hard to swallow.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Should Giants Trade For Bryce Young?

Quote from: Jclayton92 on September 18, 2024, 01:10:44 PMI'd trade a 4th or 5th right now for Brissett, and Lock him up as the bridge qb for the next 2 years assuming the patriots slowly work Maye in this year.

Maybe a straight swap - Jones for Brice. Both could benefit from a change in scenery. There's been enough screaming on this board that the Giants need to get a top pick in the draft to get a quality QB. Well, there appears to be one available.

I thought they were in place to make the plays over and over again but they either didn't make the tackles or Daniels/Robinson got 3-5 yards more after contact which made all the difference. I understand those zone defenses are going to drive everyone nuts, but the missed or weak tackles on 3rd down again and again were maddening to watch. That's not Bowen, but if it doesn't get fixed he will certainly be blamed for it.

The Giants had the 8th most missed tackles on Defense in 2023, and they were in about the same place on Special Teams. It looks like that hasn't changed. There's just a new DC driving that bus.

Right now this Defense is more about potential than substance. They traded away their pass rushers on Halloween last season and have replaced them and other departures with older, lesser personnel. The Giants are catching them at a good time and need to win this game. Contests against better talent are coming over the next 15 weeks. If they lose this one, I struggle to see how they will fare well in future games without significant improvement.

Quote from: Painter on September 14, 2024, 01:15:06 PMYou think that might that be their plan, Andrew? Or should I say, "Concept of a plan"?

Cheers!

A timely, hysterical response.

Quote from: spiderblue43 on September 14, 2024, 08:00:10 AMMy prediction .the Giants do not trust Jones to throw the ball deep, make deep middle shots.....

...........yet the short passing game is how Jones and the Giants have been successful. How come no one wants to see success in that manner? Nabors and Wan'Dale are the type of players who can turn 4-8 yard catches into 8 to 12 yard gains. I'll take that all day. Get the ball out of Jones' hand and move the ball down the field. Get a little confidence for Christ's sake. The deep shots will then come.

To my eyes, the whole offense went south last year when they tried to push the routes 10 yards further down field. The Offensive line just didn't have what it needed to allow that. Multiple injuries to QBs resulted using those tactics. Why can't we go back to what worked with lesser receivers like James and Hodgins where moving the chains and ball security were the top priorities? Who cares how it looks?

Quote from: MagicRat on September 14, 2024, 02:25:30 AMI have the fear about this game, I really do.

Ya know, I do too. I really think this sets up as a great get-back-on-track game for the Giants but I am reluctant to predict that will happen. Some in my area down in Alabama and Georgia are talking about how great Tampa Bay was last week and how Mayfield continues to get better. My response was simply, "Its Washington...... wait a week."

If the Offense can't move (and keep) the ball against this Defense, I will be very concerned. Actually, "concerned" is probably not the word that will describe my feelings.

Giants 31. Commanders 27.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on September 13, 2024, 11:36:05 AMThe most concerning thing for me was, why is flott the starting slot lol. Phillips earned that job imo.

We need an elite starting boundary opposite banks almost as bad as we need a qb.

Great observation. I read another analysis where Flott barely played slot in preseason and then landed there for game 1 with Simmons at CB, also a head scratcher.

First, this is a great topic. Thank you.

Bowen's defense is definitely old school. It was awkward to watch in Tennessee yet very effective. That is, he wants to force the offense to punt. It's plain and turnovers are obviously welcome but not a focus. Tackling, lane integrity and assignments, and disciplined defending of personnel within their area are the tenants of what he does. A player like Thibideaoux or Burns can force early throws into the areas the defense wants the ball to go just as guys like Justin Jefferson are game wreckers for everything that the Defense is trying to accomplish. The Defense as I saw it it Tennessee has a simple goal - 1, 2, 3, Punt. Running the ball is simply not allowed.

For a player like Adoree Jackson, the idea is not to intercept the pass, but instead to cover and force the ball to go somewhere else, or better yet, give the QB nowhere to go with the ball. If the ball comes out, it goes short and the defense rallies to tackle short of the first down. It is boring but the high risk, high reward Defenses of Wink and Fewell had their drawbacks too, even when they were successful at times.

If there is a Defensive version of the dink and dunk offense, this is it. It works well to try to win games in the 20s. If the other team scores 30+, they probably have 30+ in time of possession as well and wins require an explosive offense. It fits this Giants team. It can be successful. It isn't often pretty.

That's the way I saw it. (Alabama gets a lot of Titans broadcasts on network TV.)

For me, I wanted Daniel Jones in 2019. Like most, I was hoping the Giants would take him with the 17th pick. Unfortunately, the Giants elected to take him with the 6th pick even after Josh Hines-Allen, Edge, Kentucky, inexplicably fell past the 5th pick. Allen put up 17.5 sacks last season and was signed to a big deal and Jones is still trying to find his way back to his 2022 production. Every time I watch Dallas and think, "I wish we had a player like Parsons" I am reminded of choices made in 2019.

There remains a lot of predisposed over-reaction. Don't be surprised if he throws for 250 yards and two TDs and rushes for 40 and another TD this week. He'll get no credit for that because its Washington, fans have already made up their minds what he is, and the nay-sayers will all say Dallas will just humble him again in a few days. He needs to be better as does the O-Line and RBs (a whopping 45 yards rushing combined).

17 games people. 17 games. I don't expect many Giants fans will root for him at this point. I just never understand why so many root against him.

That's a QBR list from last season. The list will look very different in 4 months and it isn't even a good list now. Cam Ward is already in the top 5 after yesterday, he won't be going down on that list, and will be in New York as a finalist for the Heisman.

I will be focusing on the guys who look better every time I see them, starting with Ward and Cook.

Enjoy the games and save this stuff for February.

They drafted ahead of the Giants most years, in the top 10 usually. They traded Hockenson and two picks to the Vikings for two picks, so there is some addition by subtraction on the list.

That DeAndre Baker pick still burns me. We traded up for that clown.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: CB Adoree' Jackson
August 30, 2024, 04:33:19 PM
Quote from: nb587 on August 30, 2024, 03:41:59 PMGiants have a certain number of weaknesses.  CB is at or near the top of the list.  Jackson is an upgrade over what we have at the moment  even with his play last year.  Pretty clear that CB will be a priority on next years draft whether he signs or not.  Why are some so negative?

I'm not sure the Giants DB weakness has a whole lot to do with whether Jackson can still play a starting role for this team. Jackson knows Bowen's Defense and Bowen knows Jackson from their time in Tennessee. Jackson can be an asset to the entire DB room. I'm sure he can still play some but likely wasn't considered by other teams coming off a so-so year for the price he was asking. Dalvin Cook just went through something similar and signed with the Cowboys.

I just figured all along he would land somewhere else. Its time for him to fire his agent and get a job and his old coach is now with the Giants. It makes some sense.
