Quote from: 4 Aces on May 05, 2024, 07:57:18 PMI hope I'm wrong, but Bobbie Johnson feels like a bit of a scapegoat.

Now - I'm not saying he's a good OL Coach. All evidence points to the contrary. His guys had no idea what they were doing.

But just like any business, sh#t rolls uphill. Just like it probably does at most of our jobs. The OL struggled from the opening bell last year. Where was the Offensive Coordinator Mike Kafka when it became clear Johnson was getting poor results? If he couldn't fix it, where was the Head Coach Brian Daboll? This was a problem that derailed the entire season and got their million dollar QB hurt. None of them could fix it.

Now Bobbie J's gone, and we're just hoping Bricillo waves a magic wand and they start playing better. I'm skeptical.

The real killer with Johnson was his inability to identify his starting OL in the pre-season so they could play together and get some chemistry.  And Dabol/Kafka let that happen.  This led them to be unprepared to compete, as evidenced by being blown out in game after game at the start of the season.  The second killer with Johnson was his inability to get any thing out of Neal, and JMS.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on May 04, 2024, 11:54:03 AMThe NFL is a for profit business. It's all about maxing out profits. That is not the case with education and teachers. So I respectfully disagree with this comparison.

There is a big difference between winning and maxing out profits in the NFL.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on May 04, 2024, 11:18:54 AMThere is nothing to resolve if you agree that players are more important than coaches overall. That's all I am saying. If you think coaches are more important than players, or even that the two are equal, then
we can mutually respectfully agree to disagree.

If coaches don't count more than players that list Mighty posted of pff grades for all our olinemen would seem to negate all the optimism being expressed about how the Giants should have an average Oline.  OTOH, a bad Oline coach like Johnson can certainly have a negative effect.

Quote from: LennG on May 03, 2024, 08:36:17 PMI feel so bad for Sham. He was a great horse but against Secretariat, he just couldn't compete.

Same thing with Alydar, who came second to Affirmed is each of his Triple Crown victories.

People forget that there was a reason his (stupid) nickname was Danny Dimes after his rookie year.

Expecting our O-Line to improve to average is putting a LOT of faith in the new O-Line coach.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on May 03, 2024, 04:47:29 PMThere is no single one player who has more influence on the offense than the QB. The fact that they get paid much more than any single other position is not an accident. Obviously, you need a lot more than just a very good QB to win tough games in this league, but no single individual position is more important.

The QB is definitely the most important of the three legs.  And sometimes can overcome having one of the 3 legs being sub-standard.  But if both of the other 2 legs suck, as has been the case for the Giants during DJs tenure with the Giants, I don't think it matters how good the QB is.

Quote from: MightyGiants on May 03, 2024, 11:24:44 AMI agree, although some will point to the Bengals SB run as proof you don't need a line.  I would counter by saying they haven't sniffed the SB since, and their QB is frequently injured.

I think you can have success if you have 2 legs.

Quote from: B1GBLUE on May 03, 2024, 11:05:33 AMi think if it comes down to it, and we MUST make a move up next year, its a better year to do it than it has been in a long time. we have some CORE players. we have 2 young stud pass rushers locked up, an elite dt locked up, a semi elite mlb locked up, a number one corner locked up, a blue chip wr locked up, a franchise LT locked up. hopefully a franchise C locked up.

With all that being said, if there was ever a year in which i could see us trading up with our 1st round, and following 1st round pick, it would be the 2025 draft. not saying we are "a qb away", but we for the first time in a long time have a lot of core, normally high draft capital guys locked up.

Another point I heard from some talking head is that with so many QBs taken high in the draft this year there may be less competition for QBs in next year's draft, if the Giants go looking.

Quote from: TONKA56 on May 03, 2024, 09:53:36 AMI think the majority of folks on this board agree with you Chris but there is undoubtedly a vocal minority that do not.

I don't think he interferes with decisions so much as he just can't shut up.

I've never been a huge Barkley fan but this nonsense is completely on the immature, IMO, NY fans.  Barkley's on a new team in a new city and he's embracing it.  And there's nothing wrong with that.

Quote from: sxdxca38 on May 03, 2024, 10:20:38 AMWhat is more important to the QB than the WR is the offensive line.

Go and look up the offensive line rankings Tom Brady and Eli Manning both played with in the prime of their careers.

It is no coincidence that both had elite level line play to give them time to dissect a defense.

And both times the Giants beat Brady-led teams in the SB they did it by breaking down his OL.

Quote from: MightyGiants on May 03, 2024, 09:59:01 AMRic,

I like your post. I will say, to me this question is akin to which tire on a car is the most important.  For an offense to be successful you need a good QB and at least one really good receiving threat (can be a WR or special TE)

And an at least competent OL.  It's a three legged stool.
