I liked Mercurochrome much better than Iodine. Iodine burned like crazy whereas the Mercurochrome didn't!

I still eat fruit cocktail from a czn and return bottles to a redemption store. You get a nickle for every one.

My mother used Tincture Merthiolate on my cuts, and it burned like fire. Never heard of Mercurochrome, I suspect it's similar

So many things have changed since I was a kid that there's hardly anything I used that is used today by kids

You know, the funny thing is they did away with all those burning antiseptics like peroxide, iodine, etc., especially on the face.   That burning you felt was tissue being damaged.  So it turns out burning tissue also increased scarring

Rich. In Maine we return soda and beer glass bottles and aluminum cans for cash. Some wine bottles are worth 15 cents. Plastic water bottles are also 5 cents. That is a big reason you don't see those things on the side of the road. It is not uncommon to see someone walking along the road picking up bottles that some people still throw out while driving.

@LennG's post of a set of encyclopedias reminded me just how world-changing the internet really was.   I am old enough to remember that those books were a family's only source of knowledge and information (along with whatever other books the family may have), short of a trip to the local library.   Now almost all of us carry around a little device that gives us complete access to almost all the world's information anytime and anywhere we want it.

Young people have no clue what this is, but in my opinion, it is preferable to the turn signal dimmer switch

Yeah, my mother still has our complete collection of "Encyclopedia Americana" and "The Book of Knowledge" encyclopedias. She asked me if they are worth anything and could she sell them...LOL. Basically a decoration in a house library

I think canned fruit salad is nasty.

I remember Mercurochrome. Back when I was in Cub Scouts (maybe 9 or 10 years old), for one of out projects we each made a first aid kit into which we put band aids, gauze, Mercurochrome, etc.

Love the photos, Lenn...and yes, I remember all of those! Those cap guns and gliders were the best!
We also had the same balsa wood planes that came with propellers powered by a rubber band.

It's true; there is a rule that prevents self-service.  Well, there may be a slight majority who would favor lifting the rule there are nearly as many who would prefer not to have to get out of their car or have to pump their own gas.

Me, I have pumped gas and diesel to fill ambulances and a rescue true for over three decades, and I still pump gas on occasion at work since our vehicles are filled by a private pump.

It was sort of funny my first boss and mentor was a country boy from Alabama.  We had to go to PA on business and needed to stop for gas (the pump was on my side).   He was quite shocked that I had fuel pumping into the car before he could get around to my side.   He wasn't expecting a Jersey guy to know how to pump his own gas.  :smug:

In the area I live there are at least 10 local gas stations and only 1 offers gas pumping service.

NY has a 5-cent bottle and can return. The entire state has it.

That is the argument those that don't want self-service makes.  They argue the elderly and the disabled would suffer because they wouldn't have access to pumping service

In many gas stations in NY, they are self-service, but if you need service, like for the elderly, or handicapped, there is a button to press or just pull to a particular pump and you will get service. If CAN have it both ways if wanted.

You know what is strange to think about -- how it was always 5 cents . I do not remember when it started in NY but minimum since like the 90s . You would think they would have raised it, but there are still people who I think make a good part of their living from collecting cans.

It is just nasty to look at some people would go throgh for the 5 cents ....can't helop but wonder if some of the discarded bottles from a moving car were really meant for a street sweeper to clean up

From your posts, I know you are a lot younger than myself, so I remember when we didn't have cans to return, only glass bottles and I can remember, as a kid, we used to get 2 cents for returning them.
We had a little neighborhood grocer on our block in Brooklyn and we played all sorts of sports out on the street. After whatever game, we used to go into this store and buy Yoo-Hoos which the owner kept a supply for us, in the coldest part of the fridge. After we drank, we used to go back with the bottle for the 2-cent deposit and use it to get 2 Bazooka gums ( penny apiece). I don't know why, but this went on for years.
W~hene ver I think of Yoo-Hoos I remember those days.
