Quote from: Bob In PA on August 20, 2022, 12:03:55 PMI don't do Wordle but in the NYT today they have a special puzzle entitled "Extreme Wordle."

I saved it and attached it to this post as a downloadable PDF which prints out to a single sheet of paper.

On cursory examination, it doesn't appear to be exactly like the puzzles you do here.  Regardless, here it is.

I did solve this particular puzzle (or group of puzzles) and it was a lot of fun.

The words are mostly common words everyone knows.

Bob

PS. Forgot to mention.... the final column where you write your answers shows only 4 empty spaces (boxes) per word.  There should be 5.  Not my error. LOL

That's interesting. However, all I can do is print it out and fill in the blanks, but no telling if I got it right or wrong  :(

I could see a few "gimmees" in it, like "aught" is going to be "ghost" or "quits" is going to be "equal", but no way to know if I'm right

My biggest question is "why don't you play wordle Bob?  :-??
The joke I told yesterday was so funny that,
apparently, HR wants to hear it tomorrow

I'll publish the answers when they are published (I think they said it would be available later in the day.

One more thing: I have a set of answers of my own and want to state for anyone solving...

Although they assert that the answers are all "very common" (to quote them) words, at least one of mine is not what I'd call common, but it is indeed a word.

If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

That one "HAPPY" where the PPY are correct, but not in the right positions is a killer. I can come up with nothing at all - wait, I just thought of POLYP...I bet that's right  :-??

Jolly: There is a way to tell if your answers are correct... if they form a five-letter word !!!

According to the instructions (which I've found to be true) there is only ONE possible solution for each word.

Think of Extreme Wordle this way.... you're playing "regular" Wordle and make the guess shown in the newspaper, to which the automated game gives you the answer shown (in puzzle number one, you guess "aught" and the game shows you that there is no "a" or "u" in the correct answer, and the last letter of the answer is "t" and there is at least one "g" and one "h" in the correct answer, but the "g" is not the third or fifth letter and the "h" is not the fourth or fifth letter.

Now it's your turn to make another guess... and as it works out, there is ONLY ONE possible guess... a five-letter word that fits all the criteria I described above.

Jolly: So far, each of the answers you've proposed is the same as my answer.

The game is not easy. You'll have to really "fight" with it to come up a few.

IMO, each of the 25 gets generally more and more difficult as you progress through them.

Bob

PS ADDED... sorry for the multitude of posts... but I thought of another way to check your answers.  It is possible to incorrectly follow the rules and come up with a word that is indeed a word but it's not the answer.  A way that will MOSTLY work to help you know if you've violated any of the game's rules is the take your answer (for example the word "ghost" which is the answer to #1) and put it into an online anagram program.  Using Google search you just type something like "anagrams for ghost" and if it shows any other five-letter words then your answer is wrong.  In the case of ghost, there is NO anagram for those five letters other than the word "ghost."  That method will almost always tell you if you've got the right answer.
If Jeff Hostetler could do it, Daniel Jones can do it !!!

Stressful final two guesses. I counted a total of four possibilities that fit for those final two guesses. Using the trick of sacrificing a guess to try to get the letter wouldn't have really helped here. I had to just guess and hope to be right. Basically a heads or tails scenario going into the final two guesses.

You obviously had the "_ASTE" right fairly quickly. For me, I could see that the solution would end with ASTE, but I didn't try PASTE or TASTE because I already used my P and T that couldn't be used. I thought of HASTE, but went with WASTE as the W is the second available letter on grid...so I lucked out  #:-S

You almost had to get it because I don't think there's a 6th optional word that ends in ASTE...I could be wrong
