Okay, that makes sense.  My start word is "stare" which took shirt off the table.

Gotcha.

Yeah I always start with ADIEU, every day I play, without fail. I am not sure if it's technically the "best" starting word, but just personally I like being as in the know as possible about the vowel situation right out of the gates, and that word is as good as any for that.

I picked "stare" because, in Words with Friends, those are all 1-point letters (meaning most common).

A - 1 point
D- 2 point
I- 1 point
E- 1 point
U- 2 point

I used to play with the strategy of trying to nail down the vowels, but over time (and on the harder setting) I moved away from that in favor of just eliminating and positioning letters.

Yeah your approach may be the statistically sounder and better approach for you, but there's something for me about the way my brain works I guess where just having a lot of info about the vowels early seems to help me. I think I mentally have an easier time sounding out options that way. I have tried both approaches and seemed to have better results with the ADIEU approach. Albeit it wasn't a huge sample and I switched back pretty quickly.

I recall from growing up memorizing a list of letters that, I thought at least, comprised the most common letters in the alphabet, in order. The list could be memorized as if you were saying someone's name. The list was:

ETAO INSHURDLCU

I found it on this random article here (third line down):

http://planningwithkids.com/wp-content/2013/06/Hangman-Tips.pdf

So basically my approach is I start with ADIEU, and then after that I'm using as many of those early consonants in that list as I can (assuming I have 1-2 vowels). With average luck, I feel like I usually have a not unrealistic shot at a birdie and a pretty good shot at a par that way.

Like Dave, I prefer to target the vowels first.

Not me, the only vowel I make sure I use is "e". Of course, sometimes the first word that comes to mind has more than one vowel (usually two actually), but I don't care what the other one is as longs as one is "e".

When I can't come up with a new word to start with (which I get by looking around the room or see a word in the news, my fallback words are STORE, SHARE, STARE", HOUSE, or MOUSE (not that I've ever seen one in my house...LOL.)

I like getting "S", "T", "H", "R", and "E" used up quickly. Of course, my results are pretty much middle of the road, but like I've said in the past, I just like to exercise my brain. Not a kid anymore, and hope to stay somewhat mentally sharp.
The joke I told yesterday was so funny that,
apparently, HR wants to hear it tomorrow

That's the main reason I enjoy it too Jolly. I like having a good, quick, mild to moderate mental challenge to start the day. I don't know how much of a difference it actually makes to my brain health (maybe it does, I have no idea), but I have gotten used to it now and enjoy starting the day off that way whether it actually benefits me or not.

Bam!

Best day I've had in quite a while. One of those days when I put "X" in spots in an attempt to fit a word together. Took a long time, but got it!
