Ten traded players who will have biggest impact on 2024 NFL season

Rank 4
Brian Burns

New York Giants ยท DE
TRADED BY: Carolina Panthers
TRADED FOR: 2024 second- and fifth-round picks, 2025 conditional fifth-round pick (with Carolina receiving a 2024 fifth-round pick)

I thought about slotting Burns at the top of this list, and maybe I should have. Of everyone in my top 10, he seems like the safest lock to play like a star for his new team in 2024. Unlike Allen and Diggs, the 26-year-old is still squarely in his prime, and unlike Jeudy, he's a proven entity with a high floor. Burns has had a double-digit pressure rate every year of his career, per Next Gen Stats, and he should team with Kayvon Thibodeaux to boost a defense that finished 30th in pressure rate last season. The problem is, I could see Burns wrecking opponents this season and the Giants still stumbling because of offensive limitations. So, perhaps unfairly, he lands here, capped, in a way, by the lingering uncertainty around what Daniel Jones will bring to the table.

There are legitimate criticisms and concerns about Daniel Jones, and then there is an unhealthy obsession with seeking ways to put the man down.   The remarkable part is from everything we have seen of the man, he doesn't deserve the hate.  The man is among the hardest working (hardest luck) players in the NFL.  Yet there is this obsession with crapping all over him
I don't see it as hate and/or crapping on Jones.

I do agree with you that it was pointless to mention the offense and Jones as to how it pertains to the impact that Burns may or may not have in this upcoming season. What Jones and the offense do has no bearing on Burns' production.

Meanwhile, the NFL's deal with Caesar's, DraftKings, and FanDuel are still intact.  :boooo:  :boooo:  :boooo:

Quote from: MightyGiants on May 08, 2024, 10:40:30 AMTim,

When the Giants drafted Engram in round one, Reese talked about how he was going to be nearly impossible to cover with that 4.42 speed.  Yet, if you look at NFL's Next Gen stats, while Engram is the fastest (or top 3), his separation yardage puts him around 10th among NFL TEs.

That was my issue. Engram was always undersized, and his hands were suspect, but we were sold on the idea that LBs and Safeties (who usually cover TEs) would never stand a chance against him (because of that 4.42 speed).

Here is a link to Next Gen Stats if you are interested.

https://nextgenstats.nfl.com/stats/receiving/2021/REG/all#average-separation

I understand your point, Rich.

My point is that despite his being 10th in separation yards, that statistic did not contribute to his issues. If he had held onto the majority of the passes thrown his way, 1) he'd probably still be a Giant, and 2) his separation yards would not be discussed.

Quote from: MightyGiants on May 08, 2024, 10:28:11 AMYou are dealing with small numbers at 10 yards so even 0.1 is significant.  I hope you appreciate that while Egram's 10 yard split wasn't "bad" by RAS standards, what it is is slower than what one would expect from a 4.42 40 and shows Engram's acceleration wasn't that good, which is why he hasn't played like one would expect a TE with a 4.42 40 to play
I don't recall a single fan complaining about Engram's speed when he was here. It was his hands.

Quote from: Bob In PA on May 08, 2024, 06:31:26 AMTim: Right, but my point is... it's not conclusive that they are dissing Jones, or even dissatisfied with Jones.

Clearly, a high pick is expected to take over eventually, but it's still be Jones' job to lose (this year).

They paid him a lot of money. The only way they can attempt to get their "money's-worth" is to play him.

Bob

Bob,

I agree with you 1000%!

I don't think they were dissing Jones or disappointed in him. The Giants found themselves in a situation where they could potentially significantly upgrade the most important roster spot. You're right - it doesn't mean that he's trash.

Quote from: Bob In PA on May 07, 2024, 09:49:54 PMTim: It is also possible making a move for Maye meant they'd rather have Maye than Lock (or Tommy). Bob
Bob,

The QB order is Jones, Lock, and DeVito. If they made a move for Maye, he'd have to be viewed as the eventual #1. If they liked Maye better than Jones, then, by extension, better than the other two as well.

I don't think they'd make a move to get to a top 3 pick to draft a backup.

Quote from: Stringer Bell on May 07, 2024, 02:36:07 PMAnd yes, the rumors of trading up for Maye are telling. But what does it really say? That they really liked Maye? Yes. But not necessarily that they don't like DJ. Had that been the case, then they would have drafted JJ at 6 or tried to trade down for him, Penix or Nix if they were really low on DJ. I don't think we can call really liking a guy (Maye) an indictment of DJ when they didn't feel the need to draft any of the other 3 first round QBs available.
:-??  :-??  :-??

If they made a move for Maye, that pretty much says they'd rather have him than DJ. QB is not a multiple player position like WR.

They obviously didn't like JJ at and their actions showed that.

There was an obvious pecking order with the first round QBs and Jones, as far as Schoen/Daboll were concerned.

They were higher on Maye than Jones. They were higher on Jones than McCarthy/Penix/Nix.

Pretty simple.

He needed to make up for that first quarter interception he caused. That was Eli's only blemish in the playoffs that season.

Quote from: Ed Vette on May 07, 2024, 01:43:22 PMSo don't believe Schoen when he says Jones will be the QB this year?

Schoen: "Our expectation was Daniel would be our starter and we brought Drew Lock to be his backup and Tommy is a backup, so that's where we are and that's how we'll move forward this season. Daniel is still under contract for three more years. As it sits today, that's where we are."

Daboll: "My expectation is that Wink and Kafka will both be back. ... There are still conversations to be had."

Quote from: Jolly Blue Giant on May 07, 2024, 12:58:16 PMA lot rides on the season for Jones. Fans tend to think a QB should "take the game over" and become a gun slinging QB, and "make it all happen". The trouble is, the OC makes the calls, not the QB. Jones will do whatever his coach tells him to do as they design the plays based on the defenses he's facing. The last time I remember a QB calling his own plays (before the hike as well as on the fly) was Roger Staubach, who worked so closely with Tom Landry that their minds were like one. Landry let him go and run the team from the field while giving lightly controlled plans...and it worked. It worked because Staubach was athletic, but more importantly, had a very high football IQ that was inate to him

Jones will never be treated the way Staubach was treated, and he'll march to the step his coaches lay out for him. If he doesn't work out, or gets injured, we'll get to find out what we have in Drew Lock, and I suspect Schoen will be wheeling and dealing to get to the top of the draft for Carson Beck next season. We'll just have to watch the games this season and see what works out. My suspicions are that DJ is on a short rope. I'm rooting for him to excell far beyond the legion of negativity from an impatient fanbase. We shall see
Jolly,

The other important part of the play-calling equation is what the QB is comfortable and capable of doing. The OC has to take that into account when calling plays and designing a game plan for the opponent.

If Daniel doesn't instill confidence that he can be that guy from Week 1 to Week 18, there will be a lot of plays left and a lot of skill position talent wasted.

First, it's not, "all of *the* sudden..." It's "all of *A* sudden."

Second, when did Daboll "complain about his WRs being too slow"?

Third, the only speedy addition on that list was Nabers.

Fourth, all that speed just means they get out of Jones's comfortable 10-yard throwing window faster.  /sarcasm/  :P  =))

I've said for years that offensive linemen should take Judo lessons.

Sumo training can help with balance, leverage, shifting the weight and power of the opponent.

Living in Japan, I used to watch some of the Sumo matches. Many times, the undersized guy won because of balance and leverage.
