Quote from: TDToomer on Today at 01:57:32 PMThis forum existed. There were a lot of strong words and calls for heads to roll. One thing I seem to remember were discussion about whether Eli should have been extended to what was a pretty large contract at the time prior to the season and how much it would cost to get out of it.

TD: That's the advantage of promoting free exchange of ideas here.

We get to hear everything, and each of us then gets to decide where the "truth" might fall.

Eventually, those who correctly anticipate future developments or occurrences are proven correct, so that adds a good dose of "humility" to the experience. Sometimes, those who "yell" the loudest get put in their place, but (significantly) other times they hit the nail on the head.

Quote from: AZGiantFan on Today at 01:01:05 PMIMO, Daboll doesn't have a clue how to use a guy with Hyatt's talents.

AZRich: I don't agree... there are other reasons why it might appear Daboll doesn't know what he's doing.

One is "public" (or guess-able). He needs what the other guys do better than Hyatt on the field right now.

Other reasons are more "private" (buy possible).  Hyatt is not doing the job as a blocker, or doesn't know the system well enough, or makes too many mistakes on game-day (and is therefore unpredictable).  There are many other possibilities, including that his attitude has cost him a theoretical demotion, compared to what the other WR's are doing.

Quote from: coggs on Today at 11:36:39 AMThat military-like way of thinking is becoming less and less the norm in the workplace.

coggs: Agree with it as written, but you didn't say whether you like or dislike the "less and less" part. Bob

IMO a true draft steal.

Quote from: Philosophers on September 19, 2024, 11:42:34 AMI am not sure that is true Bob.  College is 365 day job with recruiting plus dealing mow with 19 year old millionaire star athlete children.

JH really wants a shot at winning a SB ring.  Losing to his brother is something he cant get past.  He even said, "until he won the NC at Michigan, he felt he had to sit at the kid's table and not the adult's table with his dad and brother."

Phil: You have answered the question in the second paragraph.

I had no idea about that family-related stuff.

As for the 1st paragraph, several college coaches I've spoken confirm that recruiting is a pain, but far more say that when money becomes involved [directly], the problems increase exponentially. In the first place, the majority of college "head-cases" get worse once they're in the NFL.  More importantly, due to the pressures of playing ball for a living and other factors, life gets more complex for these athletes after they leave school, so a lot of college "non-head-cases" become problematic during their pro careers.

Quote from: Uncle Mickey on September 19, 2024, 12:16:39 PMThere needs to be some variation. The D played not to lose or give up the big play to the point that it basically begged Klingsbury to kill us underneath and with the run and short /medium stuff.

Dru Phillips is an in your face CB. Banks and Adoree both can play man. Take advantage of your players strengths.

Mickey: I may be repeating myself but I think a lot of the caution was due to the players at key positions being very young, along with the fact that the defense was "new" to all of them, veterans included. Bob

I'm surprised Harbaugh left Michigan. Coaching college is WAY easier (and more fun) than coaching NFL. Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on September 18, 2024, 10:59:29 PMAs Nick pointed out, the space given by the Corners was unnecessary. They can play Man and not be so deep. It also created a situation where the Edge Rushers had to set up wide at least 7 Technique on both sides and when your Nose Tackle is lined up 0 or Nose Shade it creates massive sized Gaps. There were times the LBs covered the correct Gap but then had to come around from behind to follow the RB in a well blocked A Gap. A 5 Yard cushion between the DLine and Backers and at least 7 yards between the Cover 2 Safeties and the LBs. Too much space and when their TE and RB Chip or stay in, it makes it difficult to get pressure with four Men. The way to shore this up is to spread both DTs on some of these snaps and bring the Edges in slightly for more balance and close those gaps, and bring the Corners up on man. Maybe when Bowen has more confidence in his DBs to cover, he can modify his game plan. I get Carl's point about Press Coverage, but I'd rather deal with a running QB than the RBs chewing up yards after contact. The quick game on short passes and almost 8 yards per carry killed the Defense in time of possession. I was actually impressed they weren't gassed by the 4th quarter. Watching the all 22, it underscores what we saw game day. It took the ball out of DJs hands for at least one and likely two sets of downs. Singletary had a good game and also had some nice yards after contact at the second level. I know we will see more of the same in Cleveland but I hope there are some adjustments. This is where Kafka has to spend some time while Daboll has to spend more time with the Offense. That back seven seem to have a lot of choices to make on the fly.

Ed: Your point balances very well Banks' post versus Falato's response. I think they're both correct. Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on September 17, 2024, 12:17:19 PMThat won't happen until they bring down or sneak one of the Safeties in the Box. Do you know the success rate with 4-3 Base vs 3-4 type players in a Zone Coverage System? I wondered if they have the right personnel to stop the Run in Nickle and Dime Coverage. It may come down to the Opponent as to who they put on the field. Against a team with elite targets, I would expect more DBs. Against Washington, I scratch my head keeping Simmons off the field. They relied heavily on Dru and Banks in Run Support, but was it at the expense of a soft belly with Dex getting double teamed?

Ed: Underlying your point is the obvious problem... he doesn't trust the young deep four (I wouldn't either at the start of the season). If (or when?) things drop to a level beyond desperate, I would expect Bowen to then say "what the heck" and play the defense like the Titans played it. Bob

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 16, 2024, 12:16:18 PMAs Bobby Skinner noted, Jayden Daniels is not pushing the ball downfield.  He is dinking and dunking.  Yet, the Giants couldn't stop that offense from scoring the 7 times they got the ball.  There is no way to justify such a putrid performance.  Especially since it didn't look like there were issues with communications.  Rather, it seemed the defense was out-schemed and outplayed.

Rich: You could be right.

On the other hand, Wink might have gambled enough times to leave Daniels an easy shot downfield that would have converted what eventually turned out to be a field goal into a touchdown (meaning that the Commandos' margin of victory would have been larger).

IMO credit goes to Daniels (my favorite QB in this draft) for not forcing the ball into a defense designed to keep him out of the end zone. It kept the Giants in the game.  Three TD's is still not enough to win in the current version of the NFL.  You've got to average about 25 points, IMO.

Kept us from being mathematically eliminated in the NFL East before November. lol

Quote from: Philosophers on September 16, 2024, 11:56:53 AMYes Bob.  They certainly do.  We have Nabers and only like 4 others maybe.
Phil: My number's a bit higher than "four others" (probably seven or eight) but either number is paltry. Bob

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 16, 2024, 11:58:07 AMIf the Giants were to bench Jones now, they would get in trouble with the NFLPA
Rich: Our ownership may stink, but IMO they still care more about what the fans think (which is not much) than what NFLPA thinks (which IMO is not much at all). Bob

Quote from: MightyGiants on September 15, 2024, 04:20:09 PMThe defense looks much better  /sarcasm/

Rich: It's inconsistent to give (as we both do) Daniel Jones as much leeway as we've given him while at the same time not being patient enough to give the defense a break. It's a new defense plus a bunch of young men at several key positions. Regardless of the obvious continuing problems yesterday, a fair number of other problems have improved noticeably, IMO.  Bob

Quote from: Ed Vette on September 15, 2024, 04:42:27 PMMinnesota beat the Niners who looked invincible last week. The Saints beat the crap out of Dallas.

Both Jones and Daniels improved their game. Second week in a row that the Oline protected well.

I question  :what: no targets to Hyatt and Simmons in the dog house again.

Dru is going to be an elite Slot guy.

Losing your kicker early was a killer and it dictated the Giants game.

I'm not impressed with Daboll's Offense so far. But I get him with the walker on Jones. Maybe there will be incremental improvement. Normally starting 0-2 is a killer but I'm still engaged.

Ed: Apparently, your TV & mine show games differently than the TV's of the vast majority of our members.

I saw it too.

I fear (and at least one other member also stated this recently) Giants will wind up at a lever just good enough to cause the big shots to question if they need to go after a 1st-round QB in next year's draft.
