Quote from: Doc16LT56 on Today at 10:53:34 AMRight. Classroom intelligence isn't the same as fast processing during a play.

I think a good analogy is how some chess grand masters struggle at speed chess. If you give them time, they can anticipate every possible move, but when the pressure of the clock is added they become one dimensional.

In golf they call this being a Ranger Rick, who can't take the practice range out to the course.  It also makes those blackboard sessions at the combine seem a little over-rated in their importance.

Quote from: Giantleap56 on Today at 10:52:21 AMI don't understand why everyone is enamored with Barkley. We all have to move on. Just pretend Barkley is injured and move on.

In both Berkley's case and DJ's case many people who believed them to have been significantly over-drafted are experiencing a sense of vindication.

Quote from: Philosophers on Today at 11:57:03 AMYou have to think Archie the grandpa was happy with Eli's treatment

That was in a different tiime and one not representative of the current regime.

And I want to add, in a general sense not directed at you, that it seems to me that all of this love and covetousness directed towards Arch is based more on a name, not necessarily a player.  And really seems to be Mara-like in its desire to recreate the past.

Quote from: Trench on Today at 11:29:12 AMThanks Rich for finding this. The situation with Hyatt is most concerning as we saw he was dynamic at times last season and to fall off the face of the earth is just bizarre. It's one of my most concerning things about Daboll.

IMO, Daboll doesn't have a clue how to use a guy with Hyatt's talents.  He's very fast and he has excellent hands.  He's NOT shifty or elusive.  That's Nabers and Wandale but it's not Hyatt.  But last year most of the plays targeting Hyatt were the kinds of plays that call for elusiveness.

As to Hyatt's frustration, in my other sport, futbol, a key attribute of a coach or manager is called man management.  Something else Daboll hasn't shown much ability at.  For me, a prime example of this lack was Nabers' so called blow-up, last game.  He made a bad play and was supremely pissed at himself.  A good man manager knows if the player needs a comforting word, a 'boot up the bum', or just to be left alone.  But it seemed apparent that Nabers didn't need Daboll in his face.

Daboll strikes me as a one-size-fits-all guy.  He uses Hyatt as if he had Wandale's, or even Toney's skills.  He doesn't seem attuned to Naber's psychology.  Another reason 2022, and particularly the COTY, was so damaging is that, IMO, it instilled a layer or arrogance in Daboll.  I don't see him as being a long-term Giants' HC.

There are certain jobs where you have overall responsibility over a whole department.  For example, the GM has overall responsibility for the whole football operation.  If you have a GM over a significant time period and keep getting substandard results then it's the GM's "fault".  You don't have to analyze the detailed specifics of where the GM went wrong, it's enough that he kept getting substandard results.  So you replace him.

That's how I feel about Barnes.  He's responsible for the medical and training side of things.  And, for whatever reason, that operation has had seriously substandard results for a long time.  So, IMO, he needs to be replaced.

Quote from: T200 on September 19, 2024, 07:32:39 AMIf we weren't set at LT, then I'd agree with you. It doesn't make sense to move the only stable player from the most important position and give it to a guy who has done nothing but struggle in his professional career.

My point was more of if you're set at LT maybe don't draft a LT

Quote from: Topshelf21 on September 19, 2024, 04:50:26 AMAll I know is watching Atlanta last night and noticing just how different their offensive line is compared to us. Those guys look cohesive and locked in step with each other. "They play well as a unit" is an understatement. I'm unsure of where they are in any of the typical "offensive line rankings or in pass block vs run block, or PFF grades" etc. Kirk Cousins can barely move and he looked like he had a wall of all pros blocking for him with more than ample time to win the game against a stout Philly D.

The Falcons line impressed me. While I do believe the G-Men are improving the offensive line, comparatively speaking, they are in tiers that are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

I can't remember if the Falcons O-Line was any good last year or recently!

I don't know who Atlanta's O-Line coach is either, but someone is doing something correctly down there in Hotlanta!

Last year pff had them ranked as the #4 oline.

The hope is that as the Giants OL plays together more they will acquire a similar cohesion and coordination.

TBH, I don't really see all that much 'intense defense' of him from many fans.

Quote from: T200 on September 18, 2024, 07:18:44 PMIt would also be a shame if another team plays him at either guard position and he thrives.

It'd be an even bigger shame if another team plays him at LT and he thrives.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: Eli Manning eligible for the HoF

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on September 18, 2024, 10:20:00 PMI won't be shocked if he makes it on the first ballot. It's not my base case, but I won't be shocked if it happens. Two time Super Bowl MVP is an extremely rare thing. The company he shares for that distinction is extremely scarce and impressive. I understand a lot more goes into the evaluation than the absolute high points of a candidate's resume, but the high points matter a lot. And Eli's are pretty high.

I agree, but for me it goes beyond the 2 SB MVPs, it is the 2 last minute game winning drives.  Some discount the 2 MVPs because Jim Plunkett has 2 SB wins including an MVP, and didn't get in, but there's really little comparison.  In xv Plunkett had an excellent game but the game was a blow-out, not so much because he was so good but because Jaworski was so bad, with 3 INTs.  His other SB win was also a blowout, but it was because Marcus Allen ran for 191 yards and the opposing QB threw 2 INTs.  In Eli's 2 MVPs he really was the 'indispensible' man, which really wasn't the case with Plunkett.

Much has also been made of the fact that Eli was basically a .500 regular season QB.  But if we look a little deeper, it is really due to a Tale of Two Teams.  Team 1, starting in his first full year as a starter until the year after the 2nd SB he never had a season below .500 and had a record of 77-51.  In Team 2, which is the rest of his career, his record was 39-60, with only one winning season.  But I'd argue that that wasn't an Eli problem, it was a Giants' problem, as he was still putting up pretty decent numbers in the service of a bad, bad team.

So, while I'm an admitted homer, I think there is a very solid case for him getting in on the first try.

I'm confused.  I can't tell if some of you are arguing that Bowen is no Spags or that the current personnel is nowhere near as good as '07's.  If the latter, I seem to recall a decrease in Spag's defense when he had weak personnel.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on September 17, 2024, 03:13:25 PMNot sure what the question is? Do we need a qb yes, are there question marks about this qb class, absolutely, and are there really great options in 2026/2027 ie Manning, Raiola, and Iamaleava, yes.

If you would like a deeper breakdown of guys coming out this coming offseason or other guys then I'll gladly break them down.

Would you be in favor of a stopgap for 2025 and then looking for a QB in the 2026 draft?

Quote from: kingm56 on September 17, 2024, 12:54:39 PMI don't understand this comparison. Rodgers will be 41 this season...his last good year occurred in 2021. At this age, Brees was completely shot.  Rodgers isn't remotely the same player at 40 as he was at 35. I think his production is a byproduct of his vastly diminished abilities.  At 36, Cousins is probably a better example; he didn't look rusty last night against a very good Eagles team, playing at home.

The point is that when a player has a long injury layoff it may take a little while to knock off the rust.  I don't think the point is hard to understand.  I wasn't comparing the players, I was comparing the circumstances.

2022, and Daboll's COTY, was the worst possible thing that could have happened to the franchise's future.
