Quote from: DaveBrown74 on Today at 06:10:43 PMCan't argue your point, but this is a team that has been basically a doormat for decades. They finally have a successful year, and they're supposed to let the QB go? They weren't in a position to draft a QB. If you let Goff walk what do you do? Pay Cousins similar money?

I'm with you on the broad point of not ever paying elite QB money to a non-elite QB, but when you look at this organization and their long run history it's hard to kill them too badly for this.

If you want to say they never should have gotten rid of Stafford, fair enough, but now that they were in this situation what should they have done? If you don't pay Goff, who is your QB in 2024?
They chased him until he caught them. That contract was way over his market value. Which team would have paid him that stupid money. Same with Jones, over rating their own players. Goff doesn't have the body of work Cousins has, and he was stupidly overpaid too.

Too many years of failed draft stock caused this. Too many teams giving up on their first round picks instead of developing them. The mentality of starting a first round pick year one has killed careers.

Quote from: DaveBrown74 on Today at 05:30:55 PMAgreed. I got the first one no problem and then just struggled after that. I agree that we sometimes differ in which ones we find easy versus hard.
One of the very few times I got Purple first. I'm basking in my glory all day. 😆

The Detroit Franchise can't seem to get it all together. Stupid contract for a journeyman QB who will never get them to the trophy. They would have been much better off building a team around Matt Stafford.

I find it interesting how on one grid you can find it easily and I can't, while the opposite happens for me. This one just clicked for me.

That's one of the reasons I wish they would have graded the front 7 as a group and not had Burns and Thibodeaux as OLBs.  Seems like they used "base" defense lineups to grade this even though teams are in "base" less than 30% of the time.

I all comes down to positional responsibilities. The 3/4 Mike has more coverage responsibilities and the 3/4 Edge do not. That's why I separate the LB's from the DLine. I am curious if Thibs and Burn have the sand in their pants to transition to DE responsibility. If so, the Giants are a 3 Tech away. Simmons would be my Will and McFadden my Sam.

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 10:33:10 AMI wouldn't argue that you're wrong (I do hope so, but that's hope).  I am somewhat comforted by the idea that Flott will need to beat out Hawkins and McCloud to win that job.
I hope so too.

Flott is 6'0.5. He came out of College at 165 lbs. He's still a lightweight at 175. If Daboll likes him outside, it portends the type of Coverage the new DC will employ. He is not a Press Corner. Unfortunately, he has not improved over the years and is not only a liability in Run Support, he gets manhandled by bigger Receivers. Although he has decent back-peddle and fluid hips, he's not fast and can get faked out by jukes. He has short arms, small hands, a weak Span, and a lousy Vertical. His size was good for the Slot but his weak Run Support was an issue and I remember sitting with Bobby Skinner at Camp discussing the frustration with Flott. Of course, anyone was better than Darnay Holmes. Put him on the outside and he's going to get burned over the top and fall down and play dead at second-level Run Support. Saquon Barkley is licking his chops just thinking about it. Sorry Ric @Jolly Blue Giant, but you and I are going to have to disagree on this one. He's getting bumped by Phillips who will have the same issues but at least he's more physical although a bad tackler. If an aging Adoree was a 7, Flott is a 5.

Flott is a backup at best on a good team. I'm putting my money on Hawkins having a breakout season.

Quote from: Painter on May 07, 2024, 12:17:38 PMQB- Neutral. There is no basis to suggest that Daniel Jones, even if healthy, will be any better or worse than he has been. Better depth, yes, as it could hardly have been worse. Still, it's really all about DJ.

RB- Neutral. Even if Barkley has a great year with the Eagles, as he did for a couple or three of his 6 seasons with the Giants, I can't help but to think of him as a "boom or bust" RB. That may be unfair, but I feel no loss in his departure. Still, while I am optimistic about the new additions and current roster, and so don't feel it to be Worse, I can't yet rate it as other than Neutral.

TE- Neutral. We can hope but there is no real basis to think or to say otherwise.

OL- Better. It could hardly have been worse. Except for questions regarding Neal and ORT, which I expect to sort itself out either there or at ORG and otherwise to be a better net roster overall.

DL- Better. Even with the loss of Williams at the 3-tech, I see the addition of Phillips plus Burns to Thibs and Ojulari at Edge or 4-Man as more than compensating for what proved to not be a good Wink D overall last year

LB- Better. Best in some time both Inside and Outside with those mentioned above and with Okereke, McFadden, and Simmons at MLB and ILB.

CB/Safety- Worse. Until proven otherwise, I can hope, but certainly can't say Better and feel that Neutral would be a bit of a cop out. I can say, however, that I am pleased to have Shane Bowen as the new DC. In regard to the play in and of the Secondary, I will guess off-the-ball / bend don't break coverage outside the 20s while none tougher/better/ stingier in the Redzone.

In any case, for now quien sabe?

You can infer what you will from my comments above re Ed's earlier query unless and until I feel a need for revision.

Cheers!

I think overall a slightly better roster than he inherited after three drafts and FA is pretty poor. Rich posted the five year average PFF support teams and 2022 the year he inherited was the best year for the Giants.

A neutral rating for QB and RB is reasonable but I'll point out that Barkley was four years younger. I believe the DL is worse but the Edge/OLB is stronger. Together that could be a neutral for me.
