Title: Giants have 6th-most expensive offense in NFL
Post by: brownelvis54 on March 23, 2024, 11:10:31 AM
If this is true, then why do we suck so bad? Is this proof of poor judgement and bad signings? The Giants are pouring money into an offensive line and getting no results..

Most expensive offenses in 2024:

1. $188.8M – Browns
2. $178.1M – Rams
3. $158.3M – Cowboys
4. $152.8M – Chiefs
5. $151.1M – Broncos
6. $148.5M – Giants
7. $146.5M – Cardinals
8. $141.6M – Falcons
9. $138.5M – 49ers
10. $135.9M – Colts
11. $135.2M – Panthers
12. $133.0M – Saints...

Two players come to mind.

A) Andrew Thomas
B) Daniel Jones

Those are two huge contracts at premium positions.

I saw that making the rounds earlier in the week.  I didn't see much value in this particular stat, as it doesn't tell the whole story.   A unit is built with money spent and draft capital spent.   Even those two measures can be skewed by the relative value of particular players signed or drafted.

Every single team that is spending more than the Giants except KC has a bigger QB CAP hit than the Giants.

Don't forget about Darren Waller and his near $15 mil cap hit or Neal counting $6.6M against the cap.

Having to pay veteran linemen $5-6M/ye because they can't draft'em doesn't help either.

Detroit nowhere to be found on this list despite having a downright explosive offense... shows the power of good drafting.

Exactly. Bad drafting is the single most reason the Giants have stunk for so long, imo!

brownE: Are you certain the list is current, or is there a chance it was compiled before Saquon departed?  Bob

brownE: That's a stunner. Thanks for checking. I can't explain it, but off the cuff, it appears they need to get more 1st-contract players on the offensive payroll and cut a few veterans.  Looking over the roster, I don't see how they can do that. We seem to have as many 1st-contract players as all but a very few teams. Bob

There's a lot of bad teams on that list.

Here is top 10 cap hits for the Giants O for 2024:

Jones - 47.1 mill
Thomas - 23.2 mill (a bargain really)
Waller - 14 mill
Slayton - 8.1 mill
Neal - 6.7 mill
Runyan - 6.5 mill
Lock - 5 mill
Eluemunor - 4.75 mill
Singletary 3.75 mill
Robinson - 2.2 mill

Total 121.3 Million

Rich,

One of my issues with looking at this raw data is that it is just a snapshot of 2024.  If you have a player whose contract ballooned this year and is less next or was less the previous year, that has to be taken into account in some way shape or form.  Its sort of a lazy take.

if this article is going strictly by cap-hit this season, it could very well be how Detroit has structured the deal.  The year before or next year, these players could have huge cap #'s on the same exact contracts.

Possible, although I know for sure that their three best offensive players (Sewell, Gibbs, and St. Brown) are all on rookie contracts.
