Strange, Sport trac has Waller as retired as of today. Very few other sources have him retired. Is this real?

If a player retires, why would the franchise get hit with anything? (Cap or dead hit)
Seems to me that when retiring, you as a player forfeits any claim on remaining $$'s in the contract.
Dead cap is essentially guaranteed money/money paid out up front but spread out for accounting purposes. It is often already paid in cash terms and if it isn't already spent guaranteed is still guaranteed. The cap is accounting!
He is still on OTC.
I find the lack of communication on that front disturbing.
He should've communicated his intentions quite a few weeks ago.

100%....it is highly disrespectful
The lack of respect from Waller is getting annoying right now

Lack of communication with who? The team? How do we know he didn't communicate this with the team? Maybe I'm missing something though. Haven't been following this closely.
Maybe Waller asked for more time to think through what he wanted to do and the team granted the request. Happens all the time. In the meantime, 2 blocking TEs were signed and Cager was signed. I'm ok with Ballinger and the 2 TEs if Waller decides to retire. No to Cager. I'm more than ok if the 1st round pick is one of the big 3 WRs

He has enough time to think about his future.
If you respect the organization you are playing for, you make sure you make your mind up when you have to, so the organization can take the decisions they need to take when they have to.
It could be he's already told the Giants he's retiring, but Schoen doesn't want it to be public knowledge before the draft, or other teams would know we're looking at TEs...maybe even Brower
Mentally yes
That was clear last season
Draft isn't that far away. Why the hell don't we have an answer? Waller wants to make sure he's 100% committed to paying again? Really?
Giants' Darren Waller yet to decide whether to retire or play in 2024, wants to make sure he's 100% committed
Waller is unsure if he will play a 10th season in the NFL

In early March, Giants tight end Darren Waller said he would decide "pretty soon" whether to keep playing or retire. A month later, he still hasn't decided.
"I haven't made a decision yet," Waller told Forbes.com. "It's just a matter of respecting the process. There's so much that goes into the process of going from April through February of an NFL season. The commitment that it requires. I'm a guy who's evolving, who's growing, who's played a lot of football and been through a lot."

With the draft so close, the only ones that need to know are the Giants. Why would they want to tip off a need or lack of a need?
Non story in my opinion
It's my understanding that as of a week ago when Joe Schoen last touched based with Waller's agent, he had not yet decided. Apparently, the Giants currently feel no great pressure whatever he decides as they have other options including releasing him post-June 1st to save a non-guaranteed $11.625M against the Cap. And you know what they say, "If a guy starts talking retirement, he's already done it."
Cheers!

I agree Larry. I can only imagine if I were to go to the hospital and tell my boss "I want to make sure he's 100% committed to keep showing up here anymore" She would help me with my decision...lol
That whole 'respect the process' thing makes no sense to me. What does that even mean?
Giants need to draft a late round TE prospect. Erick All is a good one from Iowa. Transferred from Michigan which was stacked at TE position especially with emerging Colston Loveland. He needs more development and to be cleared from early season injury from as say a 6th round pick, he'd be worth it.
I suppose we might wonder if, still wallowing in Waller uncertainty come Draft day, makes it more likely that Odunze will be the Giants No.1 target. Quien sabe?
Cheers!
The Giants don't have enough cap space to sign their draft class. They save six million + by cutting Waller. After the draft, it may not be Waller's decision.

For me, Odunze is the #1 target regardless of Waller. I put no faith in Waller's ability to stay healthy nor to be productive. It is never going to be 2019-2020 for him, no matter how much we hope. The Giants took a flyer on him in the hope of turning back the clock and it didn't work. They can save 11 million by making him a post-June 1 cut, according to OTC. There is no way I want them to spend that much CAP on him.
