Title: Running Back Trivia Question
Post by: dasher on August 15, 2007, 01:00:06 AM
The Halfback Option Pass is a part of most NFL team playbooks, but not used very often. My question is to name the last NYG running back who successfully completed such a pass and some relevant catch information, if such data is available.

The last Giant Running Back to complete an option pass was Ty Wheatley back in 1996. It went for a 24 Yard TD.
In 1994 Dave Meggett was 1-2 for 16 Yards and a TD.
In 1993 Dave Meggett was 2-2 for 63 yards and 2 TD's.
In 1984 Tony Gailbraith was 1-1 for 13 Yards.
In 1970 Bobby Duhon was 2-2 for 28 Yards.
In 1967 Ernie Koy was 3-4 for 101 Yards and 1 TD; Joe Morrison was 1-1 for 12 Yards.
In 1966 the illustrious Dan (Don?) Lewis was 1-1 for 4 Yards
In 1965 Steve Thurlow was 1-1 for 49 Yards.
In 1964 Steve Thurlow was 3-5 for 65 Yards; Frank Gifford 1-1 for 33 Yards.
In 1963 Joe Morrison was 1-2 for 18 Yards.
In 1962 Frank Gifford was 1-2 for 12 yards.
In 1961 Bob Gaiter was 3-3 for 42 Yards and 2 TD's.
In 1960 Frank Gifford was 3-6 for 24 Yards.
That's my research guys. I quit at 1960. When you look at the 46 years from 1960-2006, there wasn't a whole lot of emphasis placed on this type of play. And there have been no completions since 1996- 10 years ago. Tiki attempted one a few years back unsuccessfully.

I remember Meggett throwing a couple that were pretty successful.. gotta be honest though, I completely forgot about Wheatley ever being used for the option.

FYI: From 1952 through 1959 Frank Gifford threw 14 touchdown passes from the Running Back position.
