The grades are all over the place, basically from A- to C+, depending on which of the dozens of sites one takes to heart. In the grand scheme of things, grades don't mean a damn thing. We all know that you can't grade a draft until a couple of years down the road, but that's neither here nor there. It also does not take into consideration how the pieces chosen fit neatly into the puzzle of what the team is trying to put together

The bottom line is this, each team is awarded a certain amount of draft capital, that varies depending on a won/loss record or "horse trading". If I may use an allegory here, it's like 32 people are given a different amount of money and told to go into a store and spend it however they see fit (the person with the most money getting first dibs on an item), and then when the money is all spent, evaluate who comes out with the most value for their money

Schoen made a point yesterday in his post draft meeting with reporters that I have said to myself repeatedly throught the last 3 days of the draft. His words almost went (or did go) completely unnoticed, but he said quietly offhand, "don't forget we used a 2nd round pick on Burns"...BINGO

The 2024 Giants' draft should look like this, and THIS IS HOW OUR DRAFT SHOULD BE GRADED:

RD 1 WR Malik Nabers
RD 2 ER Brian Burns
RD 2 S Tyler Nubin
RD 3 CB Dru Phillips
RD 4 TE Theo Johnson
RD 5 RB Tyrone Tracy Jr.
RD 6 LB Darius Muasau

Brian Burns is only 25 yrs old and already has been to two Pro-Bowls at the NFL level. This MUST be taken into consideration when grading this year's draft class!!!

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on Today at 01:19:15 AMI know I haven't been a part of this conversation, but it's unclear to me in reading this whether you understand that QBR (the ESPN stat) is not a pure passing metric, but rather holistic. You've mentioned it with reference to Jones's passing stats, but then said he "also" contributed through rushing. ESPN QBR already incorporates the rushing productivity of the QB. That is how its calculated. Jones's running performance against Jacksonville was the 8th highest running EPA of any QB game that year and his best from that campaign. By contrast, Jones didn't log even one of the top 50 passing performances by EPA in 2022 (his generally accepted best season). He's a running QB who happens to throw the ball from time to time. But we already know that the Giants don't have unlimited faith in this backwards skillset because of the way they structured his contract and attempted to go after his replacement this last draft, offering significant value to move up just three spots.

As to the "Player of the Week" mention, it's a relatively meaningless thing. Jameis Winston won Player of the Week twice in the NFC. No one is clamoring for him to be a franchise quarterback. Rather, it shows that talented (but utlimately flawed QBs) are capable of putting together (relatively) impressive showings. That is not surprising given they are NFL QBs. The real test is not simply flashing every so often, but performing at a high level consistently.

I've highlighted the part of your statement I'd like to address.

Daniel Jones combined stats for the whole year in 2022.

3,900 Yards 22 TD 5 INT 92.9 RTG 60.2 QBR

There is your consistency.

Enjoy!

This will be the toughest game to win.  If the Caps fall behind late, I see the potential for a major brawl.

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 08:24:34 AMAssuming 3 QBs go off 1-2-3, and the Cards took MHJ, that left a pick between Nabers and NYG.  As Gettleman how being a pick away from getting your desired WR (Devanta Smith) works out, when teams know you want him.

But how does making a play for the third pick change this? I highly doubt there was ever a genuine threat of anybody jumping up to still Nabers from them. If anything, the smokescreen was coming from the New England side, who knew they were never moving off the #3 pick, but wanted the rumors out there to try and drum up a Godfather offer from the Giants or Minnesota.

The simplest answer here is that the Giants viewed Drake Maye in a tier above JJ McCarthy so were willing to trade up for Maye but not even take JJ at 6.

TE Theo Johnson was not the player I wanted at TE but like Lorenzo Carter a few years ago, I didn't think he was going to be there either. Rankings had him anywhere from the 3rd to the 9th best TE, possibly due to the off season issue he had, but he was the biggest target in the draft at any position and showed extremely well at the senior bowl practices as a receiver. I don't see him as a split-out TE like Waller or Bowers, although he can do that. He is an in-line TE like Kittle. I think he enters camp as #5 on the depth chart but could be starting by midseason. That is not something I would normally say about a guy who was drafted in Round 4. He is a better blocker today than anyone else they have, and a fantastic redzone target. He needs to work on his footwork coming out of breaks which is a little sloppy at times.

He was impressive in his interview. --Smart, polite, gave the "right" answers, team first guy.

I think it's a solid draft. Scored it a 4.

However, with so many holes everywhere, this ought to be the bare minimum expectation.

I do think the OLine will be better - some nice additions and a new coach - I can see why they didn't prioritise that position.

I would have liked a QB but circumstances dictate the elite ones weren't ready. And reaching for a lesser prospect will only prolong the problems with the position.

I'm in Greece this week so I won't be able to watch live as it starts even later than in the UK. Will avoid twitter and this thread and watch first thing in the morning.

I think the Caps will push hard early but they are decimated on D and the Rangers have too much firepower.

I think the rangers will win a close one but I'm fully expecting some shenanigans from Wilson so we have to protect ourselves.

Rangers to close out the series and rest up.

It was a solid draft. It was a nice combination of best talent while addressing biggest need. Nubin was a bit of a surprise to me but I may have undervalued the impact of the loss of McKinney.

I've been a Giant fan for 50+ years and I haven't said this often - I thought they had a good off-season in free agency and did well in the draft on Days 1, 2, and 3.

I know some would have liked a QB or DT, or maybe even a G, but there is a limited number of picks and a limited number of players. The fact that the Giants were not awarded a single Compensation Pick in the 2024 draft should give everyone a sober slap in the face about where this team was. We didn't have much and when we lost players we found out they weren't worth anything.

I feel like I'm reliving the Mets rebuild in 1983 and 1984, or the NY Rangers in 1992-1993. I don't like the results yet but I like where this team is going.
