Burns lands a 5-year deal worth $150M max with $87.5M guaranteed, done by Todd France of
@AthletesFirst
. yowza
5 yrs 150 mill 87 guaranteed
We still have another 2nd rounder left to trade up for a QB. I like this trade.
2nd highest paid DE in the NFL
Woof! Still... Great pass rushers don't grow on trees and with the Giants QB situation their best chance to win is going to be a lot of 10-7 slug fests so they better build a monster on defense
i like the move but to be a naysayer

The bet here is teaming him with Thibs and Dex allows Burns to take his game to the next level.

So basically we gave up first rounder to make someone 2nd highest paid DLine in NFL.. this is Schoen's last move other than a QB

They can't double them all.
Risky move but lots of upside.

Man, that looks expensive for good, not great #s. No doubt he improves the D, but is he worth that much?
Schoen basically turned an aging Leonard Williams into an edge rusher just entering his prime. I like it.

That has sort of a Olivier Vernon vibe.

We need guys who will still be good three years from now. Not guys who are well past their peaks.

Bro, do you just lay in wait for me to post so that you can crap on whatever I write?! LMAO
The Commanders just signed Ekeler, so you can jump on that one again too.

About the same age as OV was.
But, IMHO, this move places as much pressure on Thibs as anyone.
Burns is a complimentary edge guy.....have we overpaid for a number two edge?
Maybe. Time will tell.

Honestly I didn't even remember that it was you who made the Ekeler suggestion. So the answer to your question is no.
I state my frank opinions on whatever the subject is, regardless of who is involved in the dialogue. There is never any offense or "singling out" intended.
While we're talking about Ekeler, the fact that the Commanders signed him means very little to me. They've been a bottom three franchise overall for several decades. What is more telling to me is that a savvy offensive mind like Harbaugh didn't want to keep him, even at his now significantly reduced market value.

TRADE!!!
Giants spent the equivalent of a mid 1st to early 2nd to nab Brian Burns, depending on the trade chart you prefer (cough cough OTC).

The outside containment is concerning as well as the total Run Defense.

Brian Burns is a beast, what they don't tell you is that he was virtually the pass rush in Carolina, he had no help and so he was doubled constantly and still had solid numbers.

Andrew Thomas, who has first hand experience trying to block him, calls Burns an elite pass rusher.

If Burns is a complimentary edge guy being paid as 2nd best DLine men, what does that make Kayvon?
Schoen is awful at contracts.

@1PantherPlace
The Brian Burns discourse has resurfaced, I see.
Unsure if this is common knowledge: Burns finished '23 with 379 "pass rush reps"--2nd lowest of his career, and lowest since his rookie year. (Had 525 PR snaps in 2022)
Burns generated a sack once every 42.1 PR snaps (ranked ahead of Bosa, Maxx, Reddick, Hutch, etc)

How is Burns a complementary guy? He's one of the premiere edge defenders in the sport.
Prior to this season, Burns was a DE in a 4-3 defense and had his most success. This past season he was an outside LB in a 3-4 where he was less effective.
Wonder if we have to worry about scheme and position versatility with him.
What will Bowen run primarily as his DL scheme?
At 6'5" 250 pounds he is too small to be a DE in a 3-4 so would have to be an OLB.
Thibs should have a monster year with Dex and Burns and Okereke around.
Lets hope our new DC knows how to use these guys

True, will be interested to see the contract structure. Hoping its written in a way that he will still be viable against the cap in 3 years.
Adding better talent on defense equals smile on my face.

Truer words never spoken
Former GM Jeff Diamond grades the trade:
GIANTS ACQUIRE BURNS, SIGN HIM TO $150M DEAL
TRADE TERMS: BURNS FOR GIANTS' 2024 SECOND-, FIFTH-ROUND PICKS
CONTRACT TERMS: FIVE YEARS, $150 MILLION ($87.5 MILLION GUARANTEED)
The Carolina Panthers traded their 2019 first-round pick and top pass rusher to the New York Giants. For the G-Men, they capitalized on the opportunity to acquire a two-time Pro Bowl edge rusher who is only 25 years old without giving up a first-round pick.
The Giants are quickly signing Brian Burns to a five-year, $150 million contract with $87.5 million guaranteed after Burns could not get a long-term deal done in Carolina. Burns becomes the second-highest paid edge rusher behind Nick Bosa. Burns played last season for $16 million on his fifth-year option after not being extended by the Panthers, who declined trade offers from the Rams among other teams over the last two years. The Panthers placed the franchise tag on Burns last week so he will get a big raise from the $24 million, one-year tender.
Burns has 46 career sacks. His production dropped a bit last season from career-highs in 2022 of 12.5 sacks, 22 QB hits, 63 tackles and 17 tackles-for-loss to eight sacks, 18 QB hits, 50 tackles and 16 tackles-for-loss. His departure creates a major hole in the Panthers' defense that ranked fourth last season but clears $24 million in cap room for the Panthers to make other moves.
The Giants now have an excellent pass rushing duo with first-rounders Burns and third-year edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux (11.5 sacks last season). They'll lead the effort to improve the pass rush that generated only 34 sacks in 2023 to rank 29th.

It makes Kayvon a guy with three more years on a rookie deal.
And Burns may be able to show Thibs and Ojulari a thing or two about pass rushing.
As I read this, the fully guaranteed after the first two years is a $25.75 out.

For those that think the Giants gave up too much for Burns it has now been revealed that 2 years ago the Rams offered 2 1st rounders and a second rounder.

But that is when he was under his rookie deal, no? Changes the trade value tremendously. I dont think it was too much, but they had to give up picks AND pay him A LOT of $.
It's a flat contract with not a lot of fully guaranteed money. The Giants can get out in two years if he fails to perform as paid.

I really like the flatness of the CAP hits because it means he just gets cheaper and cheaper as the CAP increases.
