We all remember this memorable line from Hard Knocks.

"You're paying the guy $40 million. It's not to hand the ball off to a $12 million back," Schoen said.

In light of the Giants' 0-2 start, I revisited this issue and considered what motivated such a comment from our GM.

Frankly, it appears Joe Schoen is looking at the team backward.   Smart team building is based on what you have, what you can get, and how you envision those pieces working together to create a successful team.

How much you pay a player should be based on the player's projected production, positional value, how the player contributes to the team's success, and a team's salary cap situation.   In other words, you should pay players based on how they fit into your vision for the successful team you are constructing.  You shouldn't be constructing the team based on what you have spent on players.   When I say spend, it can be salary or draft capital.

I'm seeing a lot of posts, shitting on Shane Bowens zone scheme from Sunday..

Pro Tip: When you're playing against a 1 Read &Run QB, you don't want defenders with their backs to him
+ his pass attempts are 10yds or less. He absolutely had the correct scheme for WASH

Much respect, and far be it for me to review you on defensive football...

I get the pro tip in theory, but that was not Tampa's approach in Week 1. They held WAS to 145 yards and a touchdown until late in the 3rd Q, and they forced punts.

Bowles ran a lot of zone but was in a press alignment on over 40% of the snaps, and the #Giants were in off-coverage on over 40% of their snaps.

I understand that it may not be in Bowen's DNA to press up on the line, and this is a new defense with young players—that has to be factored in.

However, does playing against a 1 Read & Run QB always warrant the CBs at 8+ yards depth? Especially after multiple WAS receivers/RBs caught the ball with 8+ yards of space to work with, sometimes with multiple blockers in front? There's no contingency to prevent that against a young rookie QB and an OC known for a more horizontal-based attack?

Washington had 145 YAC, fourth most on the week, with an aDot of just 5 yards, second-least on the week.

A lot goes into that; it's not just scheme. Missed tackles, the threat of the run with the RPO holding LBs, blown assignments, etc.

Even with those factors, criticizing the scheme after that game seems entirely reasonable.

I was among the very small minority who didn't like the Jones trade.

The Giants gave up a high 2nd round pick and a 5th-round pick.   The Giants gave him a $30 million-dollar-a-year contract (a salary that could have signed a major free agent).

So the Giants gave up two major assets (a big contract and a high 2nd-round pick) and a 5th rounder for a player who has made zero impact in two games.

This is not how you build a winning football team.

Big Blue Huddle / Ronnie Barnes
September 16, 2024, 08:03:39 AM
Game one- tells the Giants staff Gunner is healthy (after a groin injury), and the guy reinjured his groin in warmups.

Game two- Ronnie tells the Giants Gano it is good to go to game two.  Reporters observe Gano moving gingerly in warmups, and then he gets hurt (supposedly with a hamstring) in the opening kickoff.

The Giants have consistently been one of the most injured teams (with players taking forever to return and often reinjuring themselves upon their return) for over the past decade.

If the Giants ever want a chance to compete, they need to retire Ronnie Barnes instead of putting him in the ring of honor.

Big Blue Huddle / I have two questions about Daniel Jones
September 11, 2024, 10:41:23 AM
1)  Why was he so inaccurate on Sunday?  He hasn't been a pinpoint accurate QB, but he is usually more accurate than what we saw Sunday?  Why was that?

2)  Can he resolve whatever issues he is dealing with?

Big Blue Huddle / How one Viking saw Sunday's game
September 10, 2024, 03:17:59 PM
"They shouldn't of had any points," Vikings defensive end Jonathan Greenard said on KFAN's Power Trip Morning Show. "I feel like we definitely should've shut those guys out."

Greenard said the "whole world" knew "what play as coming" when linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel jumped Jones on a quick pass and snagged the ball out of midair and cruised into the end zone for a defensive touchdown.

How did it feel to know the Vikings were making life miserable for Jones?

"I've been in Houston the past four years where I've been apart of that. I've been apart of those boos when you're walking on the field and your offense doesn't make anything happen, you would think it's an away game at this point," said Greenard, who signed with Minnesota during the offseason. "But at that time, how we were attacking him and understanding where he's at in his career based on obviously the scheme that he has, whatever contract things are going on, we understand he's dealing with a lot and if we can add another aspect of pressure onto the guy to make him speed up his reads a little bit more, make sure he's not going to get confident and comfortable back in the pocket, man, it was a great feeling to see it on the first couple of drives."

But as the boos kept coming and grew louder, it got a little bit uncomfortable.

"When we heard the boos raining in, we're like 'OK, now we're good on our side.' But when it got really loud to where it was as loud as it would be on a third down should be when they're on defense, it was kind of bad," Greenard said. "We kind of started to feel a little bit bad for him as we're still just completely taking away everything he wants to do. It's good to be on the other side of it."

Big Blue Huddle / The running game
September 10, 2024, 11:48:22 AM
While the issues with DJ have been heavily and rightfully discussed, it overshadows another issue.   I will start with this Q and A with Daboll

QuoteQ: One of the things I went back and looked at the play-by-play, and you guys put yourselves in a lot of second and third and long. How do you change that?

BRIAN DABOLL: Be productive on first down. Be able to run the ball, complete passes, stay on track and not have penalties. But playing in that obvious pass situation, good things usually don't happen when you do that. So, you've got to stay two-dimensional. Play good on early downs, which helps on not having long downs. Seven of 13 on third (down) and one to nine (yards), and one out of seven on third (down) and 10-plus (yards), with numerous second and longs. So, obviously not a good enough job.

Now Sunday, the Giants rushed the ball 14 times (some of them in the second half where the defense was looking just for passes).

There were 14 attempts for 45 yards for a 3.2 yards per carry average.   While the RB position has diminished in value, offenses still need a quality running game to complement their passing game.  What we saw Sunday will not get the job done.

QuoteDuring the latest episode of The GM Shuffle podcast with Lombardi, the former executive looked back on "Hard Knocks: Offseason with the New York Giants" and took personal offense to what he saw.

"When you watch that, there were no models, there was no, 'How are we building this team?' It was really amateur hour," Lombardi said. "What it did, it was insulting to my profession. It made people (who) hang out at sports bars think they can be a GM. So, to me, it was really embarrassing."

Lombardi went on to suggest that fans have quit on Schoen, no longer have any confidence in him as general manager, and they are aware his product is no good.

Perhaps some of that is projection, but there may also be a level of truth to it.

"I feel bad for the Giants fans. I really do because I don't see how it gets better," Lombardi said. "How are they getting to five wins?"

Gunner reinjuring his groin is a prime example of Ronnie Barnes's incompetence over the past decade.  The Giants under Barnes tend to be the team with the longest recovery time for players.  So these re-injuries should simply not be happening.
