Quote from: Bob In PA on Today at 07:50:13 AMInjuries aside, it depends who is shown to have been correct. Two issues:

(A) Did we need a better QB than Jones? - If the "we need a new QB" people are correct, the Giants will continue to stink. If the "we need an elite weapon" people are correct, the Giants will make enough progress to get maybe nine wins. The schedule this year will be a bit easier and the offense will be able to either to keep the ball away from the opponent or attempt to outscore them (depending on which team we're playing).

(B) Is running back really a lot less important than it has been historically? - If the "yes" people are correct then the Giants have a good-enough answer to the absence of Saquon and we'll be ok because the offensive line has clearly been upgraded.  If the "no" people are correct, we will miss Saquon and teams won't have to game-plan to stop him, leaving them free to game-plan to stop either the upgraded receiving corps or spy Jones and keep him from running the ball.

Bob

PS. Defense will be about the same as last year, but don't forget we must have (a) someone step up as a viable replacement for Leonard Williams (IMO he was an unsung hero on defense and a good running partner for Dexter); and (b) we need a young veteran to become a "star" (maybe number five, maybe Burns, maybe Okereke) plus no 2nd-year player fall into a sophomore-year slump.  That may seem to be a lot to hope for, but IMO it's not only do-able.

To point B, there are also those who feel that Saquan has more reputation than production last season.  To those people, losing Barkley was not an issue.

I know the draft was on everyone's mind this weekend, but did Ranger fans notice that all teams up 3-0, or 2-0 going into yesterday's games all lost? There were two great overtime contests in Long Island, where the Isles lived to fight another day, and in Vegas, where the Stars' light refused to dim.

What are the Caps going to throw at the Rangers in game four later tonight 8 PM EDT (5 PM MST)? Will Ovechkin finally wake from the dead? Will Charlie stand on his head? Will Wilson go out to try and hurt a Ranger player or two? Odds are all of this, and more, are things the Rangers will need to overcome today.

Great games today and the Avs and Jets start it up at 11:30 AM local, 2:30 PM EDT. Great hockey day ahead!

Let's go Rangers!

We have a new defensive coordinator who could be either a stud or a bum.

It's hard to envision a successful season next year with an injury prone Jones at the helm. I think we're slightly better defensively now than at the end of last year but even though we improved the offensive line losing Barkley really hurts. I don't think teams are going to lose sleep at the thought of stopping our run game. I see 6-7 wins.

I'm with Dave. I don't see much in the way of value even if four of the guys drafted start next year. To me value is drafting a guy who unexpectedly dropped to them. For instance Kool Aid McKinstry was a consensus top 10 pick this time last year. He almost made it to us at 47. That pick imho would have been tremendous value. I'll say this for Schoen and company, they don't reach for guys. Everyone they picked went in the range that they were projected to go.

Quote from: Ed Vette on Today at 06:58:34 AMThe elephant in the room is John Mara. It's obvious to me that Schoen partnered with him on passing on a QB. If Jones fails to elevate this team this season with the infusion of talent at WR, TE, RB and the FA Offensive Line upgrades, Schoen is safe for at least two more years. The only way Daboll would lose his job is if he imploded.

Mara has to pay Jones and there was no way he was going to sit this year out. Since as he said, they did everything they could to screw this kid up, his mindset had to be on giving Jones the support he needs to succeed. That's the only way a GM with no ties to Jones doesn't draft his own QB. All the BS about how Schoen took the job unconditionally, was all rhetoric because there was an understanding in place. They paid him knowing he would have at least two years to prove he's that Franchise QB.

The offer to move up for Drake Maye was weak. They knew the Pats needed a QB. They had no intention of ever drafting a QB. The signing of Drew Lock was their insurance policy.

Anyone who believes that Daboll and JJ McCarthy wouldn't have worked really didn't do their homework on that kid who has done nothing but win his whole life. I doubt Daboll was all in on this. If course he's no fool and knew how far to go.

So now, either Jones wows the football world, or Drew Lock gets his chance and if they both have nothin, say hello to Kurt Cousins in 2025.

Can you imagine the shitstorm around here if McCarthy becomes a regular pro bowler? Well, it won't be just "here."

I believe Nubian offered 1st round value, add to that his range and versatility makes him my pick.

Didn't get a franchise QB.  Can't win without one.

Do you think that McCarthy was that guy?

I noticed two themes in the players taken

On the offensive side of the ball they looked for speed

On the defensive side of the ball they looked for smart players

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 08:33:47 AMI liked Odunze but he was more the safe pick (high floor/lower ceiling).  I think Odunze's ceiling is occasional Pro Bowls, while Naber's ceiling is perennial All Pro
I'm only saying that if Nabers and Harrison were gone, they would take Odunze and not McCarthy. The Giants are a "safe" pick organization.
