I'm not sure I buy into this whole "Jones is scared to throw deep" narrative.

Quote from: GloryDays on Today at 02:02:11 PMTommy seems to be quite under-rated because of his pre-nfl portfolio. I watched a couple of his games and I really think the kid has some special ability. He has a pretty good arm. He is accurate and throws some catchable balls. His pocket presence is excellent. He can buy time and hit the target running. If no one is open he tries to run or secures the ball for minimal loss. In the Washington game, behind that atrocious line, he was sacked 9 times, but was still able to throw some nice completions and win the game.
On the Jets game, I think, they tied his hands and he still almost won that game! He could have been 4-1, in 5 games with a lousy O line and average targets.

I agree. Some people just can't get past his lack of pre-NFL credentials but the eye test doesn't lie. I don't believe a Gardner Minshew type career is out of the question for him if he can land in the right situation.

Quote from: kartanoman on Today at 09:10:24 AMI think the "meh" season for the ages was 1996 with a lame duck head coach, an even more broken quarterback and a former super-star running back run down to the steel walls of his tires, and hardly a WR to throw to.

Peace!

Did Thomas Lewis ever make it onto the field?

"Game manager" is quickly becoming my leading pet peeve.

I thought "shot across the bow" or "throwing off his back foot" would never be supplanted.

Quote from: AZGiantFan on May 01, 2024, 10:09:58 AMMaybe he can team up Young Joka.

This makes me want to cut him even more.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Maybe they can get OBJ and Lil Wayne to join.

Quote from: Gmo11 on May 01, 2024, 09:45:17 AMI could see Mara and Co. asking him what the hell are we supposed to do now? And in this scenario... there's not a really good answer to that question.

That's interesting considering a good portion of our forum routinely insist that the Maras give "you will work to support Daniel Jones" ultimatums to both the head coach and general manager.

Quote from: T200 on May 01, 2024, 09:27:08 AMI have been saying this every single year Jones has been in the league: he can be evaluated despite what support he has or doesn't have around him. I got a lot of pushback from you and others saying that it was too difficult to evaluate him because of the lack of quality NFL support.

Seems to me the ability to evaluate a player is subjective.

I really had an awakening when I saw DeVito's pocket awareness vs Jones.

Quote from: T200 on May 01, 2024, 09:02:43 AMIf one of the three QBs that Schoen (and Mara) passed on has an outstanding season, here's what's going to happen here at the BBH:

- There will be a litany of "I told you so" threads from folks who wanted to move on from Jones
- There will be a ton of pushback from Jones supporters saying, "It's only one season. Daniel had a great 2022 and won a playoff game."
- There will be the same regurgitated arguments for and against Jones. The horse will be resuscitated to only be beaten to death again. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Painful isn't it?

I predict that if JJ McCarthy goes on to have an excellent career, the pro-Jones camp will attribute it to the team around him while the anti-Jones camp will put Schoen in the crosshairs for it, with the occasional mention of a Mara ultimatum.

Quote from: babywhales on April 30, 2024, 02:41:39 PMWaller's gutless, uninspired brand of football is not what the team needs.

Paying 14 mill for what little he brings to the table I think is a huge waste.

I suspect they will cut him post June 1 so only 1.9 mill will hit this year and 5.9 next year.

It was a nice try but a swing and miss

What did you see in Waller's play that leads you to describe it as gutless? Any examples?

Whatever. Iron sharpens iron.

Inevitably the Jones conversation breaks down to a debate about some abilities being coachable and others being innate. While I think there is some merit to this, it is often over-exagerated and becomes a crutch.

Quote from: H-Town G-Fan on May 01, 2024, 12:22:29 AMWhat a wildly disingenuous and self-serving statement.

I would say this is beneath you, but putting those who disagree with you into an illogical, inaccurate, and indeed ridiculous box to make your own opinions seem correct by extension is not a new tactic. And even this very thread shows how your self-statedly "proper" assessment is out of line with reality. To wit, I literally noted I could see Jones repeating or improving somewhat on 2022, but you ignored what I actually stated in responding to me in favor of what you find easier to attack.

Divergence of opinions is fine, and indeed healthy. Willfully misstating another's opinion because you disagree with it is dishonest and unworthy of recognition.

I'm just going to say one thing about this board that has always frustrated me. Nuance is usually missed or ignored when a forumite's post can be swept up in the current of a major running narrative.

What does Daniel Jones need to show you this year to prove that he's "the guy?"

Let's say he miraculously stays healthy all year, throws for 4000 yards, 35 touchdowns to 15 ints...do you trust that he's "arrived" and it's the new normal? I'm not sure I would. The eye test matters. I need to see things in his mechanics and how he responds to situations that raw metrics cannot capture.

Once again, I believe Jones' health with be the deciding factor, not head-to-head competition.
