Quote from: Trench on April 30, 2024, 11:53:47 PMThis is an INCORRECT assessment of those who are questioning Daniel Jones. Speaking for myself, it was not said he is "terrible, or middling and no possibility of having success!"....actually those who are negative on Jones have stated QUITE the opposite!....we are still rooting for the guy and feel he is a good QB but not a franchise QB. Posts like that make me sincerely give pause.

Hi Trench,

We have had some good conversations in the past, and I don't think you have ever said he was terrible. In fact I think you have stated that you do hope he succeeds and you would root for him if he does and want to be proven wrong.

However, some critics against Daniel Jones have said he was terrible.

Within the last couple of days this comment was stated about DJ "If Jones stinks as he is very likely to do."

And this one from a few weeks ago "Well what do you want me to call them? Never in all my life do I remember a fanbase of any NY sports franchise; Football, baseball; hockey ; and Basketball so devoted to a player who so obviously just stinks! Can you name one? ... I can't.

So, as you can see some of the critics of DJ have expressed that he stinks or is terrible.

Once again not naming you, but there have been more than a few that have expressed this.

Marcellus Johnson has the kind of profile which suggests a legitimate shot to make the practice squad. If a rookie UDFA coming off an injury, even a high upside one, challenges to earn a swing T/back-up role that is not necessarily a good sign for us.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on Today at 10:55:06 AMHe could have a high qb rating, and qbr but still end up with 3000 yards, 12 tds and 5 ints and that would be successful to you?

With a minimum of at least 15 games, those numbers seem unlikely.  Still, I can't answer that question without knowing why, despite being in the top 10 when throwing the ball, the team elected to have Jones throw so few passes.

Our roster is our roster. Free agency/draft season we get to play at being GM and armchair critics. From Rookie Mini Camp onwards we should embrace being fans again. I intend to support every player on our roster and hope they succeed, irrespective of any personal reservations. Come on Daniel Jones, Evan Neal et al. Play like Giants!

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 10:46:54 AMI am not a big fan of just statistical measures to say what is a successful season (as that removes context), but I will offer up what I would consider a successful season by Jones:

1)  No more than two games lost to injury, ideally less

2)  A QB rating of at least 95

3)  A QBR of at least 60

4)  As I mentioned previously, I would like to see his YPA hit 7.0 or better

I am not saying Jones will hit these marks, as I can't predict the future.  I do think there is a reasonable chance he will, but I am not going to go far as to say he is favored to do so.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on Today at 10:41:32 AMSo then what is your baseline expectation for Jones this season?

What will be a good season for you? Is that 4,000 yards 20 tds and 5 int or what?

You obviously think Jones will ascend, so was does that look like in production?

Good question, and thanks for asking it in a respectful and civil manner, that meant a lot.

Considering in 2022 he threw for 3,200 yards and rushed for 700, while only playing in 16 games and not the 17th one as they had already clinched the playoff spot.

I think with the addition of Nabers, and Robinson and Hyatt ascending, combined with them addressing the right side of the line, I'm looking for production something like this:

3,500-4,000 Passing Yards
400-500 Rushing Yards
66%
22-30 TD's
10-12 Int
93.0-98.0 RTG
60.0 QBR

Something along those lines, with the Giants have a winning record.

At least this is what I am hoping for, will it happen? We will just have to see how the season transpires.

and you? What do you think he puts up this year?

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 10:19:19 AMDJ has an injury guarantee in his contract for 2025.  That fact may push the Giants to bench DJ in the second half if the season is out of hand (as other NFL teams dealing with such guarantees have done).  Here is the explanation by Dan Duggan

It would certainly make sense that IF he hasn't elevated his play over the pre-2023 period (frankly I completely discount the 2023 season because the whole team was unprepared to compete in the early part of 2023) and the Giants are out of the running barring a miracle - 2-6 or even 3-5 - then it would make sense to bench him and conserve CAP resources for 2025.

Quote from: Ed Vette on Today at 06:46:55 AMFormer NFL executive and current analyst Michael Lombardi believes that New York Giants co-owner John Mara impacted the club's decision to not spend the sixth pick of the 2024 NFL Draft on a replacement for starting quarterback Daniel Jones.

"And remember, John Mara, the president of the team -- he's the reason why Daniel Jones is making all that money -- he loves Daniel Jones," Lombardi said during a Monday appearance on sports radio station 106.7 The Fan, per Dan Mennella of Audacy. "He drafted Daniel Jones as the sixth pick overall. Nothing would make them more happy than Daniel Jones being successful. They're almost willing it to happen. It won't, but they're hoping it will."

Specifically, former Giants general manager Dave Gettleman selected Jones with the sixth pick of the 2019 draft. Current New York general manager Joe Schoen and Mara came together to sign Jones in March 2023 to a four-year contract that could be worth up to $160M.

The Giants can escape that agreement next offseason as long as the 26-year-old isn't dealing with a football-related injury at that time.

This past March, well-known radio host and FS1 personality Colin Cowherd suggested that Mara wanted a quarterback in Jones who Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll "privately don't want."

https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/amp/former_executive_has_theory_on_why_giants_didnt_draft_daniel_jones_replacement/s1_13132_40300610

The fact that Mara is in love with a pedestrian Qb is scary for the future of our franchise.

Quote from: Jclayton92 on Today at 10:46:49 AMI think the organization would be negligent if they see he is still seeing ghosts to allow him back out there to run into defensive linemen. Yes all of his sacks aren't on him but he didn't help the situation either.

I would be perfectly content with them wrapping him in bubble wrap and placing him at the end of the bench. Then telling him if he wants to play he's welcome to waive the injury clause, if not enjoy your   🍿.

If Jones still sees ghosts, he needs to be benched regardless of the contract.  The team will simply have to accept that they broke DJ beyond repair and move on.
