DJ has an injury guarantee in his contract for 2025.  That fact may push the Giants to bench DJ in the second half if the season is out of hand (as other NFL teams dealing with such guarantees have done).  Here is the explanation by Dan Duggan

Dan Duggan
@DDuggan21
I'll try to answer this thoroughly and hopefully it eliminates the confusion. There are two guarantees in play, which I think is leading to most of the confusion.

• He has a $30M base salary in 2025. $23M of that salary was guaranteed for injury *only* when he signed. So if he has an injury that prevents him from passing a physical and they cut him, he's due that $23M. There's no deadline attached to that. Whenever they cut him, if he can't pass a physical, he's due the $23M.

• If he's on the roster on the fifth day of the 2025 league year (mid-March), $12M of that salary becomes *fully* guaranteed. So if they cut him for any reason after that date, he's due the $12M.

• So the two guarantees collide if he suffers a serious injury that will prevent him from passing a physical next March and they want to cut him. They could cut him and eat the full $23M or they could hold onto him, eat the $12M and then cut him when he's healthy to save the additional $11M.

They could try to get him to waive the injury guarantee, but I'm not sure why he would. You negotiate that into the contract to protect yourself from this very scenario.

Quote from: Uncle Mickey on April 30, 2024, 10:27:11 PMJones threw down the field in Shurmur's offense and in Duke. His downfield passing according to advanced metrics was really good.

I would suspect with a Bracillo coached OL the guy who took average lines with NE and an injury riddled Raiders line last year to top 10-12 finishes gets these guys playing sound cohesively and much more technically sound as unit.

I heard an football guy once say you build your passing game like a basketball team. It's not a perfect comparison obviously but I love the analogy. Theo Johnson is your Center, Hodgins is your Power forward, Hyatt/Slayton are your 'undersized' speedy small forwards, Nabers is your electric do-it-all shooting guard, and Wan'Dale is your shifty jitterbug Point guard. A lot of gameplans can be formulated when you have so many receiving options with varied size and strengths to their games.

Jones has never had a WR corps like this not even close. In fact he has never had a receiving threat that was pro bowl caliber like ever. The walking corpses of Golden Dome Tate, Kenny 'on a Holiday' Golladay, Darren 'Hit A' Wall-er or Kyle the Red-nosed Reindeer doesn't count.

In theory, this should be a drastically better receiving group and a drastically better offensive line , if nothing because of coaching alone. No rookies starting on this line either.

Again, I present all this not because I guarantee Jones balls-out but quite simply now there is finally a reasonable opportunity in place that he could.

Just want to say that I completely agree with the notion that you are an excellent addition to our little band.  Love the basketball analogy.  And the nicknames for our past and present failurs.s.  Well done.

This makes me want to cut him even more.

Yeah that's what I was thinking too. Maybe they can get OBJ and Lil Wayne to join.

Quote from: babywhales on Today at 08:27:25 AMLast year Waller was a disappointment and looked like a guy who wasn't all in.  For him to come out this offseason and admit as much, be gone.

I am not convinced Jones can progress through 4 receiving routes on 1 play anyway so there is that... at least in his first 5 years he has not so far

Agree on Waller.  Also, it's hard to progress through 4 receiving routes when you're on your can  or running for your life after your second read.

Quote from: Gmo11 on Today at 09:45:17 AMI could see Mara and Co. asking him what the hell are we supposed to do now? And in this scenario... there's not a really good answer to that question.

That's interesting considering a good portion of our forum routinely insist that the Maras give "you will work to support Daniel Jones" ultimatums to both the head coach and general manager.

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 08:45:23 AMI have to confess, I was left a bit puzzled.  The claim that Mara "impacted" the decision not to draft a QB at 6 wasn't actually supported by the provided quote.  Either the author mischaracterized Lombardi's quote or they left out important parts of the quote.

I found another take on the quote:

"I wasn't surprised at all by that," Lombardi said on The Sports Junkies on 106.7 The Fan in D.C. on Monday. "Because if you listened to what John Mara said at the owners' meetings ... he said very clearly, 'I'll favor them drafting a quarterback if they're in love.' And he used the word 'love.'"

"I think they were in love with Drake Maye, but I don't think they were in love with J.J. McCarthy. And remember, John Mara, the president of the team -- he's the reason why Daniel Jones is making all that money -- he loves Daniel Jones. He drafted Daniel Jones as the sixth pick overall. Nothing would make them more happy than Daniel Jones being successful. They're almost willing it to happen. It won't, but they're hoping it will."

I am not sure that you need an owner to tell a good GM that you should only be drafting a QB at 6 if you love that prospect.  With a less than 50% success rate on drafted QBs, drafting one hoping they will prove to be good is a bit of a fool's errand, in my opinion

Quote from: MightyGiants on Today at 09:52:58 AMI guess that is where we differ.  I see examples of DJs being capable of being franchise QB.  I think his performance against the Vikings and even his record-setting performance against the Cards last season showed that he can be that franchise QB.   Of course, showing flashes and doing it consistently are two separate things.  Everyone sees things a bit differently, and there is nothing wrong with that.
I think that's the difference between being a franchise QB and not.

I don't think passing on McCarthy, Penix, or Nix will cost Schoen his job if they perform well in year 1. Of course, their careers are highly unlikely to be defined by their first season in the NFL (whether good or bad)--so firing a GM off such performance would seem equally misguided to me.

Wan'Dale and Hyatt are talented receivers. Slayton is a consummate professional and a good hand. That, in my mind, would have provided a rookie QB a decent enough foundation for their first year. This also ignores entirely the TE position and potential contributions from the new running backs.

Unless Jones plays well enough to prove he is the long-term solution at QB (which I don't even know is possible in light of his health concerns), I don't think it matters. A positive season from Jones would be just that and no more.
