Quote from: Ed Vette on October 11, 2023, 09:05:59 AMCheck with the PR Department who checked with the upper brass who checked with the owners on what they can and can't say... and its Tuesday.

The Giants beat writers have been doing damage control all week long just as they normally do if you follow them on Social Media.  During the Reese and Gettleman years they allowed John Mara to get a pass with their reporting and deflecting blaming Gilbride, Coughlin, McAdoo and then Jason Garrett.

The Giants made a huge financial commitment to Daniel Jones in the off season with the expectation that he would be a franchise QB they could rely upon to play week in and week out.  Just as they paid Eli Manning to do so who many times especially towards the end of his career took a beating yet went out there and played each week.

If Jones is healthy enough to play he should play if not then he sits and you make do with Taylor.  But lets be honest over the last three games the Giants have scored 1 offensive touchdown so they can't be much worse regardless of who starts at QB Sunday night.

Quote from: T200 on October 11, 2023, 08:08:13 AMI see that a lot of folks want to focus on just ONE aspect of what's going wrong, despite there being a laundry list of issues. They are all intertwined and one unit affects another.

And one's poor play doesn't excuse the other's poor play.  This idea that because the offensive line's play has been bad excuses Daniel Jones's poor play doesn't fly with me.  As Boomer Esiason and other analyst's have pointed out Jones has made a bad situation worse.  This is a 5th year QB on his second contract who the Giants just paid.  The expectations should be higher for his play if they aren't then why did the Giants ever pay him?

Quote from: GMenRF on October 11, 2023, 08:11:23 AMIf I was in DJs shoes I'd tell management I'm not stepping on that field until Andrew Thomas suits up.

Daniel Jones is lucky John Mara loves him so much because any franchise that were in the Giants shoes after last season with the first four seasons Jones put up would have let him walk let alone paid him the contract the Giants did.

And it's not like Thomas is sitting out on purpose.  He's dealing with an injury that takes away a tackles ability to push off the line.  Do you want a compromised player on the field if the idea is to protect the QB?  I sure don't.  I want him to come back when he's able too and not rush back only to hurt himself even worse.

Quote from: madbadger on October 10, 2023, 08:04:04 PMLeonard and his 3 passing touchdowns for Duke this year? No thanks. We've gotten royally screwed with the last two quarterbacks we've drafted from Duke. Taking another 6-5 guy from Durham with a mediocre resume won't fly

If you're an NBA team needing a point guard you look to Duke.  If you're an NFL team needing a QB you don't look to Duke.

Quote from: brownelvis54 on October 10, 2023, 07:20:14 PMActually, Carolina Panthers are currently 0-5.... it would be interesting to see if they would go after williams if they do get the number one overall pick.

Actually it would be the Bears pick.  Remember Carolina traded up to the Bears #1 spot this past spring and don't have a 2024 1st round picks.  That belongs to the Bears.  You could see a situation where the Bears have the 1st and 2nd overall picks in the draft next spring.

Quote from: GMenRF on October 10, 2023, 06:18:09 PMI'm leaning on QB as well considering how we whiffed on Neal and not changes/adjustments have been made (ie Bobby Johnson is still part of the coaching staff) I don't have confidence on this team drafting a Tackle early and developing that player properly.

Honestly, I need Schoen to admit they missed on Neal and at least salvage him by sliding him to Guard and let Euzudu play RT when Thomas comes back.

Unless you are replacing Andrew Thomas as Left Tackle it makes zero sense to me to spend another Top 10 draft selection on a linemen.  In general unless you're talking about a Left Tackle I am not a fan of spending a high first round pick on a linemen.  I even had some reservations about taking another linemen before the 2022 draft though I was good with Neal at the time.

Quote from: JT39 on October 10, 2023, 06:21:37 PMDon't get too high on the PAC 12 QBs out Williams. Horrible defensive division. Air raid offenses. Barely hit. And nix and pennix are in their 5th and 6th years already.

Here's my top 5

Williams
Maye
McCarthy
Leonard
Ewers

The knocks on Mahomes when he was drafted was that he came from an Air Raid offense and we see how he's turned out.

Quote from: GMenRF on October 10, 2023, 06:10:47 PMYou know I'm a Jones supporter and even say he gets out of this funk when the line miraculously gets better, but Mara needs to take a long hard look at DJ's health and assess his realistic longevity with the team.

Think it comes down to if you are Schoen and are in a position to draft someone who you consider to be an elite QB prospects in 2024 you make the move because if you don't and just roll with Daniel Jones in 2024 you may not be given the opportunity to draft a QB in 2025 if things also go south in 2024.

I still question whether John Mara will allow Schoen to draft a QB to replace Daniel Jones but I don't watch much of any College Football so I will defer to you all who do.  Interested in @Gmo11 thoughts as he was someone years ago who was high on Herbert and obviously nailed it.

Quote from: True Blue on October 10, 2023, 05:39:05 PMThis shows they are aware of the state of the OL, hopefully woth some configuration they can figure it all out.

They've always been aware and have always been trying to address the issue.  But when they've only had their All Pro Left Tackle for one possession all season and have lost their center for a number of weeks what was already a difficult situation has been made worse by circumstances beyond their control.

Big Blue Huddle / Re: PFF QB Generated Pressures
October 10, 2023, 04:59:47 PM
I don't know the metrics they use to calculate this or whether it's like a lot of their grading that is opinion based.  I just found it interesting that we throw number of QB pressures around frequently and just assuming that it's all on bad line play when it's more complex than that.  Between this argument and there being a small sample size of just 17 games is why I am not a fan of utilizing a ton of metrics to analyze NFL players and teams.  At least with baseball there are 162 games and enough of a sample size with the analytics that you can use the data to project more accurately.

Big Blue Huddle / PFF QB Generated Pressures

Not sure how they calculate this and what they quantify as a QB versus the offensive line generating pressures but thought I would share.  It's interesting that if you take this and adjust the total number of pressures the Giants have given up the offensive line ranks third to last rather than last. You cannot view this attachment.

Rather than start a new thread just thought I would share Boomer Esiason's take https://twitter.com/wfan660/status/1711807557528850568?s=61

Quote from: MightyGiants on October 10, 2023, 02:06:16 PMThere was a time when this was most certainly true.  NY was the media capital of the world, and if you were good and playing in this region, you got tons of publicity and exposure.

These days, I am not sure how much that is still true.   First, traditional media isn't what it used to be, with the internet and social media having joined the party.  Secondly, technological advances are such that almost anywhere can serve as a TV studio for interviews.  So you don't need to be local for national media to give a player lots of exposure.

On the down side, this area has a high cost of living and state income tax.

The point is the Giants aren't a more undesirable landing spot for an elite QB prospect than the Bears or Cardinals.  It's a false narrative that it's a franchise that no elite QB prospect would want to be drafted by.

Quote from: katkavage on October 10, 2023, 12:49:57 PMThe one consistent is John Mara. Terrible owner.

And the beat reporters who are his minions that have done damage control consistently over the years blaming coaches over his cronies in the front office.
