Title: Do any of you use hulu as your streaming service

Wondering if anyone who has hulu is having an issue with the recording feature.

Bill,

I don't have Hulu for my streaming services.  However, as a former IT guy, I can share the secret of how many IT-type problems are fixed-  Google it

The reality is if you have a problem, there is a very good chance others have had the problem, and have gone online to talk about it and seek help.

This might help you with your problem

Off Topic but does anyone have YouTube TV instead of Cable? My bill is almost $300 a month which we negotiated down $25.

I do Ed. It's ok but for what I watch, but it ends up being somewhat pricey. Not nearly as pricey as cable or satellite, but truthfully I just don't watch a big variety of tv. I do like YouTube TV's recording feature though.

It advertises $79 and I think it covers five sets. I would need an Internet provider and I think that would run under $75 unlimited. The basic package seems to have a lot so I might not add on too much. Would it be almost half of what I'm paying now? Our last bill was $300.

Ed,

I have found Tom's Guide pretty trust worthy.  They do a nice breakdown of the various cable alternatives.

Sounds like an easy decision to me Ed.
If my wife would go for it I'd drop YouTube TV completely, (ours is $72.99/mo). I get a lot of what I watch or listen to using Pluto, Tubi (both are free), Netflix, Amazon Prime, MLB.TV, NFL+Premium, and Pandora. I can catch news and weather highlights on Pluto or Tubi. I also subscribe to around 70 different (free) YouTube channels, and that's where I spend a bulk of my viewing enjoying topics such as cooking, music, politics, and homebrewing. Streaming has definitely changed the way I watch TV.

I have Hulu 79.00, Netflix 20.00, FRNDLY 8.00 and Amazon prime. Prime video comes as part of the prime package which we would have a anyway because we get a lot of stuff from Amazon. Internet is 80.00 a month so in total we spend about 200.00 a month but when I  had everything through Spectrum I was paying 250.00 a month (no Netflix or FRNDLY) so my cost is much lower now. I have enjoyed the Hulu app. Lots of viewing options and lots of sports channels. My issue with them now is the DVR system seems messed up. Not recording things it should and the delete recording doesn't seem to work. Very frustrating to have to delete 35 episodes of Yellowstone every day.

I had not heard of the FRNDLY TV.  That service is an excellent companion to YouTube TV as it fills in almost all the holes for a cheap price

As an old fart, I really enjoy FRNDLY. Lots of old shows that I  didn't watch when they were originally shown. And lots of old westerns.

Do you get a remote with YouTube TV or do you use the TV remote?

Ed,

That depends on how you would stream it.  If you have a smart TV that is capable of downloading the Youtube streaming app, then you would use the TV remote.  If you are using an addon like an Amazon Firestick or Roku device you would use that remote.

I have Apple TV on one set. Two sets are Smart. I would need a device for two TV's. Apple is $150. Might make more sense to upgrade the TV. What do you recommend.

I am partial to Amazon Firesticks.  They are nifty devices that can be had for as low as $20 something (on sale or refurbished) to $40 or $50 something (depending on features and if you want/need 4K).  As long as the TV has an HDMI
port, they work.

Of course, if you want a newer TV with a better picture, upgrading is always an option.

Ed, maybe I'm not understanding, (still on my first cup of coffee). You already have an Apple TV box? You already have two "smart" tv's? Why would you need to get anything else? YouTube TV is just an app to install, like Netflix. Buy the service, install the app, sign in and you're all set. I have an Apple TV gen4, two Roku boxes, and an Amazon Firestick. They all do do basically the same thing but just present you with their own interface. Of the three I have the Firestick is my least favorite (sorry Rich), but only because I'm not a fan of their interface. I find it a tad kludgy.

I would need Roku or fire stick on two of the five TV's. So they have their own remote?

How many TV's can one account apply to for YouTube TV? Does one account apply to all my TV's?

Anyone, does a Frndly account apply to all TV's for that one price?

Gotcha.

Yes, Roku and Firestick both come with their own remotes.

Yes, one YouTube TV account can be added to all the TV's, but as far as I know you can only have up to three simultaneous streams going at one time.

I don't know anything about the Frndly service.

Frndly cost me 8.99 a month. The 2$ more than you see advertised is so I can record the shows and you can watch on 4 devices at 1 time. For my money, it's the best viewing app for the price.

They offer a free 7 day trial. Doesn't hurt to look.

Nope. Just some other stand-alone apps - NFL+Premium, MLB.TV, Netflix, Amazon Prime, and a few other freebies.

Every once in a while YouTube TV offers a free weekend of HBO, Showtime, etc. I use that to catch up on shows like Curb Your Enthusiasm, Ray Donovan, etc. But I've yet to add any of those to my subscription. As I've said my tv viewing is probably quite different than most folks.

I set up the free trial for YouTubeTV and Frndly on the AppleTV and my laptop and Iphone. The only add on I may want is the Redzone. To record on Frndly is very easy but I have to figure it out on YouTube. I think this can work for us. The alarm company needs the landline or they will charge me for an upgrade. I have the cable bundled package for internet, landline and cable with Optimum. I can switch the landline to AT&T probably for $25. a month and see if Optimum will give me a decent rate for internet hopefully around $75. This should all save us about $100 a month. I get apple tv, HBOMax, Netflix, Hulu already. So I shouldn't miss shows from regular HBO.

One thing I will be curious about is the DVR of both services.  With Fios, it's easy to skip the commercials having set up the remote with a 30-second skip forward and a 10-second skip back.

Just playing with them now but it looks like a 15 second back and forth with YouTube but on Frndly you can only go back 10.

I've never had a smart TV. Aside from the apps that initially come with one how do you load new apps as they become available? I assume the TV is connected to your home router so is it an automatic download or do you have to initiate downloading new apps manually?

This varies from TV to TV.  As I told Ed, I prefer Amazon Fire Sticks.  One of the benefits is uniform operation from set to set.

They all work basically the same, download an app and you can run it. I bet somewhere on the web you can find out which platform is quickest to add new apps, and which one has the greatest selection. I would think all three of the big ones - Apple, Amazon, and Roku - have very similar app options. In the end all it should come down to is price and/or which interface you like best. I just don't know how quick TV manufactures are at adding apps to their smart TV models. Perhaps planned obsolescence gives them less of an incentive to do so, but I'm not sure.

I set up Roku express on Linda's mothers TV and it's less complicated now but still have to use the tv remote to adjust the volume and to shut the tv off. Is that how yours works too? I see various models on Amazon and it would have been better for her to have just one remote.

That's the one downfall, at least in my house. I've never looked at trying to get down to a single remote for my Roku. My Amazon Firestick remote works well for powering the TV and Firestick, changing channels, and volume though, so extra points for that. In fairness my Apple TV remote might be able to do the same if I had the box directly connected to the TV. But I'm first going through a 5.1 surround receiver which complicates things a bit. I know there's programmable multi-function remotes that should allow you to use just one remote, but I think they can be quite expensive, (for a good one), so I've never explored that option.

My Apple TV powers on and has volume control but it doesn't shut the TV off. The other downside of the Roku is it's recharge is USB and her smart TV doesn't have one so it has to be plugged in. Also the HDMI cord is very short.

When I got my mother to watch streaming, I had to simplify things for her.  So I ordered this programmable remote that allowed her to do everything from one remote.  You can even program it to do more complicated and repetitive functions.

Optimum offers a one Gig Fiber Internet for $70.
https://www.optimum.com/internet

Should I purchase and upgrade the Modem/Router? any recommendations? I'm using an apple router but rent Optimum's Modem for $10 a month. Right now the internet service is 200 Mbps. The plan I currently have is $89.99 with unlimited Optimum Wifi and they give me a credit so the net cost is $47.99 but I'm dropping Cable TV.

If I'm understanding correctly you'll soon be paying a lot more for Optimum stand-alone internet service after you sever your cableTV from them. The price jump, plus the $10 rental fee for their modem, would prompt me to look to buy my own modem. If you do just make sure the modem you buy can handle 1 gig speeds. May not be an issue if they all do that that now, I don't know. Also find out the specs of your Apple router and make sure it too can handle the faster speed. Not all can.

I just replaced my router with one that allows me to load vpn config files on it, giving me vpn protection on all connected devices on my home network. Plus, (fingers crossed) it will allow me to watch Giants games in real-time since I'm out of network.

We ordered it. Thanks!

I have a smart tv and also eschew it's smartness and use a Roku.  A good analogy, for me, is the built in navigation system my car has.  I never use it because my car has Android Auto (and Apple Carplay for apple folks) and navigation in Google maps is far superior to the built in navigation.  Roku is superior to the built in 'smartnes', IMO, and the Roku remote can be configured to control the tv as well as the Roku.

Quote from: Ed Vette on June 06, 2023, 10:03:00 AMI set up Roku express on Linda's mothers TV and it's less complicated now but still have to use the tv remote to adjust the volume and to shut the tv off. Is that how yours works too? I see various models on Amazon and it would have been better for her to have just one remote.

I can control on/off and volume on the tv from my Roku remote, although that might be true of all Roku remotes.  Try this:

1) go to the Roku setup screen

2) scroll down to Remotes & devices

3) click right, on Remotes

4) click right again, where your particular remote will be shown.  Mine is Voice Remote Pro

5) click right again near the bottom of the list is 'Set up remote for TV control'

I'm not sure which Roku remotes will show this.  But if your's does:

6) scroll down to 'Set up remote for TV control' and then scroll to the right for 'IR setup"

7) click on 'IR set-up and you get a screen asking you to confirm your tv brand (I think it tries to figure it out - it got mine immediately but I have one of the most popular brands, Samsung, so I don't know if it was the default or it figured it out.  But it also has a 'Change TV brand' choice you can clickmon if it doesn't have your brand as the default.

8) it then tells you to point your remote at the TV and goes through several screens asking you if you hear music playing.  After you are done with the screens it congratulates you and tells you that you can now control on/ff and volume with the Roku remote.

This probably looks very complicated but trust me, it is very intuitive once you find the starting point.  The key is step 4 and what remote you have.  Alas, the Roku can't be made to control the volume on a sound bar, just a TV

Hope this helps.

PS - I just did a little more research and the remote that comes with the basic Roku express cannot do this.  But if you have the Roku Express 4K+ it can.  I'm not sure if an upgraded remote ($19.99) will allow a basic Roku Express to control volume and on/off, but another solution would be to just get a Roku Express 4K+ ($29.99) which comes with the right remote to do it.

Quote from: Ed Vette on June 06, 2023, 10:41:46 AMMy Apple TV powers on and has volume control but it doesn't shut the TV off. The other downside of the Roku is it's recharge is USB and her smart TV doesn't have one so it has to be plugged in. Also the HDMI cord is very short.

Whoa, if her Roku remote has USB recharging it almost certainly can control volume and on/off.  Does her remote have a power button at the top and a volume rocker on the side?  If so, try the procedure in my previous post.

Oops, late the party. Looks like you have it all figured out.  I'll leave this here in case someone else can use it.

She ordered the remote from Roku with the on off and volume but it hasn't come in yet. I'm sure that's the issue. We ordered two Roku express 4K from Amazon Prime yesterday and got them the same day for the two dumb TV's. I'll set them up later today.

On a side note, I upgraded my Alarm so I didn't need a landline, so I canceled that from Optimum. Then cancelled Cable TV and went with YouTubeTV and I did get Frndly for now because I like two channels. I got one gig internet after negotiating with Optimum for $49.99 the first three months and then $69.99 the next nine months. At some point I'll have them install the fiber for the same price.

We saved $150 a month. I may not have done anything if they didn't piss me off by jerking Linda around with a measly $25 adjustment at the same time Bill started this thread. I appreciate all the help from everyone! Actually YouTubeTV pretty much has all the channels I need and with AppleTV, Netflix, Hulu, Max and Prime, it's all I'll need except for the Red Zone. I think Roku come with an offer for Paramount Plus.

@Ed Vette, I would love to hear a follow-up after a couple of months about how the streaming experience compared to your cable experience.

Hey Ed. It's been a couple of weeks since this thread has been updated and I am wondering how things are going with your streaming services. What do you like and what do you not like?

Like the magazine says. Enquiring minds want to know.

I've found that YouTube TV has everything I want. I haven't used Frndly and I'll likely drop it. With Apple TV, Netflix, Hulu, Max and Prime, there is much to watch and much more I want to watch than not streaming these services and having hundreds of cable stations. With Apple TV, I can also stream my photo albums and watch a YouTube video or podcast and listen to Spotify. Unfortunately I can only listen to Spotify and not get the visual. I wonder if I pay for Spotify premium if I will get the visual.

Linda likes it too. Three TVs have Roku and one has Apple TV. The other is smart and Linda says she doesn't need Roku on it. Both remotes are good to work with but Apple for some reason only shuts down streaming but not the TV so I need the TV remote to do that or eventually it shuts itself off. It could be the Samsung.

On the Smart TVs, Samsung has its own channel with lots of options but I have the YouTube account and it's on all the TVs for that one price.

Linda's mother struggles with the remote even though it's less options than the TV remote but that's because of her condition.

I upgraded to one Gig of Optimum. I also changed my alarm to wireless and that also has a router. Unfortunately and after working with support, my stick RING in the driveway isn't consistently recording events. I think it's because the Slomins Router is interfering with the Optimum Router. I've move the Optimum router to within twenty feet of the RING but still have issues. I reduced the Optimum Firewall to minimum and that helped slightly. The Optimum has a range of 1000 feet so this is frustrating. The back door RING hasn't been affected which is weird. The Arlo camera has its own Router and that is working fine. I do have an extra ring doorbell that I can replace the side with or move the Arlo to the side but I want to try a couple of other options first with the current setup.

Bottom Line, it was a lot of time spent making the switch but well worth it. Someone told me about a free streaming service that has a thousand channels but haven't tried it and I don't know that I will.
