Title: NGT - Wildcard Weekend Games
Post by: DaveBrown74 on January 13, 2024, 04:47:44 PM
Starting a thread for all of this weekend's action.

I have Cleveland in the current game although not with high conviction. Just hard to trust a rookie QB and rookie HC in their first ever playoff game against this caliber of a defense. But this could certainly go either way.

I liked the Browns to win as well.

Stroud really gets the ball out quick when he somes something he likes.

Bobby Slowick, OC for the Texans, will be a real hot name once they are eliminated. Texans offense is a rookie and a bunch of unproven player this year. Now Collins is a number 1. Singletary looks legit. Tank Dell was a stud rookie and obviously stroud had a great year.

Liking Browns too maybe for sentimental reasons; I am always a sucker for Cinderella stories like Flacco and Browns horrific record as a sports franchise.

Definitely true.

Stroud is just a phenom. Amazing what an elite QB talent can do for a struggling franchise.

He stays calm and has a short memory. He misses two deep TD passes and didn't let it shake his confidence.

I cannot believe I just signed up for peacock. But then again there are no good shows on tv any more so what are you going to do if you want a relaxing evening?

In any event, they got Chris Simms doing pre game commentary and what is odd is  I like both Simms as football analysts. It is odd that father / son can do the same things and still be good and respectable at it.

So mant have  tried to get their kids in on the racket ; Bob Ross had his kid painting but, w/o Ross' hippie talk in between the painting -- it just was not the same. Dave Ramsey kids getting in on it -- just does not work. Millionaire Next Door author Thomas Stanley having his daughter write about millionaires etc. just does not work....

I think the Chiefs deserved this win, massively.

And Mahomes steps up when he needs to. That's just a type of quality you see in Elite QB's only.

I really wonder what Allen will do for Buffalo against the Steelers.

My forecast

Kansas @ Buffalo

NFC Divisional
Bucs @ 49ers
Lions @ Cowgirls

AFC Championship
Kansas @ Baltimore

NFC Championship
Lions @ 49ers

SB
Kansas @ 49ers

Saturday wrap-up: Chiefs and Texans move on. Two games in which the QB was well worth watching. Some fine defensive play, too. Ol' Man Upset was in the stands in Texas. I submit he has more effect on a game than does Ms. Taylor Swift.

Go flag-free, Big Blue! [Note: That does not include next year's pennant!]

That and do they have any grit on the OL?  That team seems to get out physical'd in the trenches when the competition gets better.

How many more years of tanking to win a playoff game?

I realize they had a number of injuries on defense, but they scored 7 points yesterday with what is supposed to be a great offense.

It's funny; all year, I have been hearing about Texan's QB CJ Stroud.  What impressed me yesterday was the Texan's defense, it was very impressive.

Quote from: JT39 on January 14, 2024, 09:18:40 AMMiami needs a QB

I have never been a big Tua guy. They're just in a tricky spot with him though. Guy has put up big time numbers there, and they're clearly not in a position to draft anyone coveted. I could see them pulling a move like what McVay did a few years ago where they go after what they believe to be a simply better QB than what they have (Stafford over Goff) in a high profile trade, but short of that they only have three options at the position:

(1) Stick with Tua and hope for the best while building the rest of the team

(2) Draft someone who is available when you pick and hope you have a read on the guy that none of the 20-plus teams in front of you were able to have.

(3) Be on the lookout for a potential free agent that they view as an upgrade.

Option 1 is probably what they will do, at least for now. I doubt Tua plays his way off the team, but he could get that knockout blow concussion that ends his career.

Option 2 is a possibility, although you rarely see this move. It takes some balls and confidence because you are generally going to be mortgaging the next three to five years to go all-in on the next one or two. Not many coaches/GMs are willing to do that. It's also not easy to find a partner in such a trade idea.

Option 3 rarely works (as far as winning a Super Bowl). This is more a move teams make that want to return to stability after a terrible period. That's when teams find themselves bringing in the Derek Carrs and Jimmy Gs of the world. Are guys like that better than Tua? Probably not.

Option four would be to blow the whole thing up and start over. Given the Dolphins have, until very recently, been a non-entity of a franchise since the Marino days, I see zero chance of this as long as they have seasons like the one they just had.

The Dolphins had a lot of injury issues and kind of gave away the division. I think they are capable of better regular seasons than this one with the current group. If they can get home field throughout or a two seed one year, that could be their chance.

How many more pieces do they need?

Title: Re: NGT - Wildcard Weekend Games

The answer to the OP question might depend upon the weight given to a defensive squad keeping the opponent's points low vs. the defensive squad scoring points themselves. Lot's of other factors, too.

Regards.

Go flag-free, Big Blue!

Their D is far from great. There is room for improvement there.

The Dolphins had a ton of injuries to key players throughout this year, too.

Look - I'm not defending Tua. I have never been a Tua guy. I think he is limited. Maybe they can go after Cousins or make some other move. They're not going to blow the whole team up though. The Fish have been hot garbage for two decades plus prior to 2022. They need to hope for better health next year and perhaps some defensive upgrades. This might enable them to push for a top three seed and have a better shot at a deep run.

I can't believe what I am reading here regarding Tua. He's easily a top 10 QB with arguments top 5 in the entire NFL. They are not going to give him away for a 35 year old Cousins who has never won jack in the NFL playoffs.

I am so happy for Demarco Ryans. HE should be NFL coach of the year. What he has done in 1 season, his first as HC is amazing. And he send that rapist enabling Browns to the golf course. Poetic justice for the Texans to stomp all over the team that took that cry baby off their hands even though he didn't play.

I wonder how that game might have played out if it were in Miami.

That is what home-field advantage means, not playing in a dome, but if you are a cold-weather team, then the cold weather is to your advantage.

Same as our Giants in the Parcels days, when come December and January, we needed a strong defense and a powerful running game.

Rams are run very well.  They were pretty much left for dead this year in preseason picks.  I heard their starting  secondary had 4 NFL starts combined coming into the year.

They have a rookie 5th round WR running wild to pair with their 3rd round star.  They rebuilt their OL in a couple of years...

Quite a success story. Turned his career around.

The Eagles were DOA. Tampa botched chances to run them out of the building in the first half, and still they were helpless.

Eagles back seven is a godawful mess, plus guys like Graham and Cox are relics. Without AJ just to run deep sideline routes and body defenders out of the way..they're compromised.

Schadenfreude is enjoyable with them and the Pokes..but I wish that wasn't all we have to celebrate.

They never recovered from San Francisco taking retribution on them from last season's NFC Championship debacle. From that point on, they were never the same team.

It couldn't have happened to a better team and, especially, a coach who deserved everything that has happened to him during that game, and afterward.

Peace!

Ever since the 49ers whopped them 42-19 they went into a free fall.

1st time we played then they barely beat us
2nd time we returned the favor and clocked them

Like to think we contributed to their demise.

At one time they had a great pass rush.  It disappeared

I also saw a fire Siriani poster. Those fans are an embarrassment. Weren't they in the Super Bowl last year? Didn't they win the Super Bowl about 5 seasons ago as underdogs to the Patriots? One bad playoff loss and they act like they are Jets fans. Pathetic. Thank you Tampa. Go Detroit.

Wonder if the Eagles tanked this game to stick to the Giants.
