Title: Why do Cats hate some people?
Post by: Ed Vette on April 19, 2024, 10:53:25 AM
A couple of weeks ago Linda and I went out to dinner with a friend and his wife. In the course of the conversation, she mentioned that Cats do not like her. All Cats. While we were discussing this in a nice Italian Restaurant, we heard a cat scream from some back room. It was surreal. It was weird.

Has anyone ever heard of something like this before?

I have a love-hate relationship with cats.

Before Sharon and I got married, she had "rescued" a cat from another AF member. They actually met by chance at the kennel. He was turning in the cat for adoption because he and his wife were getting ready to have their first child and she did not want the cat any longer. After talking with him for a while, Sharon decided to take "Hobbes" home. Hobbes was now the "man" of the house.

After we got married, there was a new sheriff in town and Hobbes wasn't having it. He would challenge me at every turn, hang out on the top of the fridge and take swipes at me as I passed, and all kinds of other craziness. It took some time but I eventually won him over. I have tons of pics of him sleeping on me, jumping on me to hold him like a baby, hanging around me like my shadow lol.

We were close until he finally went home to his maker. We never got another pet after Hobbes. Too emotional.

Cats are mysterious creatures that see themselves as the highest order of the food chain. While dogs look up to humans and think, "they feed me and give me shelter, they must be God"; whilst a cat thinks, "they feed me and give me shelter, I must be God"

Here's another example:

Two dogs and a house cat die at the same time. Standing at heaven's door, God asks the German Shepard what he believes in. The German Shepard says, "Discipline, loyalty, and obedience". God says, "you may enter"

Next, God asks the Doberman what he believes in. The Doberman says, "Loyalty, obedience, and love of my family". God says, "you may enter"

Next, God asks the house cat what he believes in. The cat says, "I believe you're in my seat"

Anyway, it's quite normal for cats to have one person they trust in, no matter what, and see others as a nuisance or just in their way. Cats take a long time to earn your trust, unless you've raised them from birth. They especially hate strangers (in most cases). As far as your friend goes, cats are intuitive and can sense things we can't. If they sense that she is nervous around cats, they pick up on it immediately and will want nothing to do with her. The more she feels that cats don't like her, the more it becomes part of who she is and cats sense it. Having a cat screech while talking about it is coincidental, but very funny. That's all I got  :-??

I can completely understand your situation Tim.

It made me wonder what the cat sensed that night. It happened the exact time we were discussing it. Nothing the rest of the night. Cats seem to like me and will brush up against me and let me pet them. Although I've never had a cat as part of the family.

I'm the same way. I remember stopping at a girl's house one time and her cat came up to me and I scratched its head while it purred like crazy. The girl told me she never saw anything like that because no one could get near that cat except her. Cats usually like me, and I don't know why - especially my son's cats. They come running when I stop in and jump on my lap the second I sit down. It can actually get irritating

I've had cats off an on...and dogs. I favor cats only because they can take care of themselves when I'm gone. I don't need to get a dog sitter. I lost two cats in the last couple of years to the highway, Jeter and Rambo. Both Siamese (Jeter Lilac point, Rambo Chocolate point) Which really surprised me because for years, they never went near the road. Then one morning (a year apart), there they were, lying in a pile by the road. At least it had to be quick  :(

I only have pictures when they were young. Jeter turned into a big old Tom Cat who strutted around like a lion, only "King of the House" instead of the jungle

And destroying the couch while sharpening his nails  ~X(

Can't find any pictures of Rambo...they're somewhere, just can't find them

I'll make this short and sweet

I HATE cats. PERIOD.

No particular reason, so leave it at that.

I like cats. We have two right now. I used to not like them before I met my wife, but I grew to like them over time as she had cats when I met her and we have had other cats since.

Dogs are way better in most ways, as they are more affectionate, loyal, fun, playful etc. But they are also much higher maintenance than cats. Our cats are pretty affectionate too. I know some cats are kind of unfriendly and nasty, but not ours. There are nasty dogs too.

I am reminded of this scene from "Meet The Parents." I find it amusing:

I forgot that scene, and it made me laugh.  =))  I thought it was going to be Focker saying he milked a cat, or when the cat crapped in Jack's mother's remains. Movie was a classic

If we were six inches tall, cat or dog... it's not ending well.

The thought process to wrap itself around that man's leg in order to bite and hold on was incredible.

I had always been a dog person and indulged in stupid speciesist humor like, 'the more times you run over a cat the flatter it gets'.

But after we had been retired for about 5 years, one night at dinner I told my wife that I'd like to have one last pet before my time came.  A dog would just take too much energy with walking and needing someone to take them when we traveled, so putting aside our bias, we decided to get a cat.  We went down to PetCo where they had rescue cats and picked out an orange tabby and about 200 bucks worth of paraphernalia.

I named him Eli.  Interestingly, the people I knew who knew about cats said males made the best pets.  It became pretty evident, after an adjustment period in which he realized just what an improvement his life experienced, that he was 'my' cat, even though my wife was the one who fed him.

I called him a puppy cat because a lot of his behavior was very puppy like.  And he is insanely friendly when people come to my house, including complete strangers.  I have a handyman and a housekeep who come in and do for me and he follows them around and supervises them

His real value as a companion came when my wife passed away unexpectedly in February of 2023.  For a while it was strange as he would walk around as if he was looking for her.  But he got more cuddly with me and it's a rare night when he's not up on the bed sleeping with me.  He's been a real and continuing life-changer.

You have a nice companion. It sounds like he's got some of the traits of a dog.

I'm sorry to hear you lost your wife.

I am also very sorry to hear about the sudden passing of your wife. I know it is over a year now but I'm sure the pain never goes away.

As I said in another post, over the years the people who post here have shared so much of their personal lives that sort of makes us a small family. We share the good and the bad and we try and be there for each other in this sort of strange way

Glad you get some comfort from the cat.

Rich, you're under no obligation to share personal information about your life with us. But man, something as significant as losing your wife can't be casually slipped into conversation!

So sorry to hear about your loss, man. That's heartbreaking 💔

Hope you're coping well 👍🏾

I am, although there were some foggy months there.  My 2 daughters who live 5 and 15 minutes away from me took magnificent care of me.
