Big Blue Huddle / 2022 vs 2023 Comparing Rosters
August 31, 2023, 09:24:25 AM
QB- 2023 Daniel Jones in the second year of a new system as he made strides in improving his pocket awareness and ability to read the field.

Tyrod Taylor has been seen as having a role in the development of Jones.

DeVito is a PS player who may eventually develop.

RB- 2023 Barkley a year healthier. Grey drafted as a backup and ST player.

Tight End- 2023 Waller comes in from a trade as a serious weapon. Berlinger healthy and a year of development.

Receivers- 2023 This may be the largest area of improvement. The addition of Hyatt and Campbell adds speed to the unit with Slayton coming off his best season.. Second-year for Robinson and Hodgins in the system. Shep back healthy and Beasley on the PS.

Offensive Line- 2023 improvement in Evan Neal, Ezeudu and Bredeson. Drafted a high quality starting Center. Depth slightly better that includes the PS players.

Defensive Tackles and Defensive Ends- 2023 Signed and drafted three Players who are significantly better as Starters and Rotational Players

Edge/Defensive Ends- 2023 Second year for Thibs, a healthy Ojulari and a trade for The Boogie Man.

Inside Linebackers- 2023 The acquisition of Bobby O, the improvement of McFadden and the trade for Simmons makes this the best group in over a decade.

Defensive Backs- 2023 Solid Draft of two starting CB's now brings three good CB's to this group. McCloud is moving back to Corner because of the strong Safety Squad. Still untested but going in, this is a much stronger group.

Special Teams, uncertain.

Anyone think any Squad regressed or where the 2022 team was better?

in the backups? They got snaps at every possible combination to the detriment of continuity and combo blocks as Bobby Skinner said in their podcast.

It's getting late and I would hope the rotation ends as they prepare for Dallas.

We know Neal looks to have improved but until he shows consistency, he's a developing starter. I would be surprised if JMS didn't have any growing pains. That said, do any of the backups make you feel warm and cozy?

Lemieux may be the best of the bunch. Matt Peart was horrible in pass protection. I have no confidence in Cunningham and just ask Tommy DiVito how those backups affected his game.

I think Daboll knows his best lineup when injuries hit the interior line, will be moving players. Especially in the case of the Center or RT going down.

Big Blue Huddle / Who Needs A Great Game This Week
August 25, 2023, 09:56:30 AM
to secure a roster or PS position?

I'll start out with Tommy DeVito. Tyrod Taylor's 2024 season voids a few days after the Super Bowl. The Giants need to decide on the backup position. If Tommy has another solid game, they need to decide whether to carry a third QB or hope he clears waivers.

Cager looks like it's his job to lose since Sweeney is injured but it could come down to him and Myrick.

Beevers could be a casualty of the Simmons trade or it could be Ximinez or Fox. Baldonado looks like a PS candidate.

There are about five players who need a solid showing on the Offensive Line.

Darnay Holmes is certainly in jeopardy of losing his job.

The 4th RB position if there is one is up for grabs.

Do the Giants carry a couple of injured players like McCloud and Beasley knowing they could be back soon?

Slayton, Campbell, Hyatt, Hodgins, Shepard and Beasley.

Still looks pretty potent to me.

I'm sure there will be a lot of disagreement. You can adjust mine or make your own. The wins and losses have to balance.

Exact Team Record matches = 10 points each
Division Order = 10 points for each Division
Division Winner = 5 points each

I would hope that Daboll has enough leeway and balls to not let numbers dictate the starting lineup. In the case of Ezeudu, they just don't want to give up on the kid yet. My guess is all three players are not the complete package.

Thoughts?

Big Blue Huddle / Grade Daniel Jones by Trait
August 14, 2023, 02:55:39 PM
After reading the article on ranking of QB's by trait, I thought about the subjective nature of the survey. For example, when ranking Arm Strength, any list that has Lamar Jackson in the top ten and leaves Daniel Jones off, loses credibility with me.

If we use these traits in evaluation of a QB, how would a knowledgable Giants Fan grade their QB on a scale of 1-10 with ten being the highest?

Arm Strength
accuracy
Touch
Mechanics
Field vision
Decision making with football
Compete level and toughness
Pocket presense
Rushing ability
Second Reaction ability

For example, Jones:

Arm Strength 9
Accuracy 8
Touch 8
Mechanics 10
Field vision 7
Decision making with football 7
Compete level and toughness 10
Pocket presense 8
Rushing ability 10
Second Reaction ability 8
85

Big Blue Huddle / One Cutdown Day, August 29th
August 14, 2023, 10:03:32 AM
There is no ability to pick up a player off waivers before August 29th to at least work with the team before the season. Although the tough cuts are the last ones and the best players.

Besides Slot Corner and Oline, what other positions need better depth talent?

Big Blue Huddle / NBC vs The NFL Channel
August 12, 2023, 02:17:47 PM
With YouTube TV they give the recorded option of either platform.

Speaking strictly from the clarity of the broadcast to the camera angles and close up views, I noticed a significant difference in how much better the NFL Network's cinematography was for this game.

Did anyone switch back and forth and notice what I'm talking about?

Big Blue Huddle / Early Concerns
August 10, 2023, 07:42:17 AM
My biggest concern is Nickel corner. Both Holmes and Flott have been exposed multiple times in coverage. What adds to the concern is that Wink is sticking with both of them and hasn't elevated or chosen another player to compete for that position. The Giants have three of their best corners who in most games won't be on the field at the same time. There will be a couple of games where Adoree Jackson will have snaps in the slot but neither Banks nor Tre Hawkins have logged time there.

The Safety position looks solid enough to move a player up but this is strictly a Man Coverage position in most cases.

Is there a player on another team that may wind up being cut who might fill this hole? Or will Wink get fed up with Holmes and just check the box with Flott and hope for the best?

Other concerns are positions not yet solidified. I'm not satisfied keeping the best interior Offensive Lineman off the field. Ben Bredeson has worked hard to be on the field. I don't see Ezeudu beating him out at LG. I can see a platoon system. As for Center? They have to go with JMS. Can't have any issues with snapping conversations.

Another one of those question marks will be the second ILB position and their coverage ability. It looks to be Mikah McFadden but in real game situations last season, he was badly exposed as being lost.

The backup Edge Guys of Ward and Ximinez have not been upgraded. One injury to either Thibs or Ojulari and the Defensive Backs are left out there holding their dicks. Same if Bobby O. goes down.

Chalk Talk / Day 9 2023 Training Camp

Picture perfect day, slight breeze hardly moving the flags.

As the Giants go into the last day of practice before they head out to Detroit for Joint Sessions and the first pre-season game, I'd like to summarize my take and observations at this point.

Today, I'd like to see them solidify some of these camp battles where possible. Obviously, Schmitz is the starting Center. It's not quite clear yet who the starting Left Guard will be and how that impacts the Right Guard position. Most observations see Bredeson as the second-best Lineman on the team after Andrew Thomas. If Ezeudu can secure that LG spot, then I'd like to see him come out with the first team today and I'd like to see Bredeson at RG. I like the fact that Ezeudu can pull better than any LG the Giants have had since Richie Suebert. I like the pass protection Bredeson gives them and with this team looking to be a much more explosive Passing Offense, that becomes critical. The reason we are seeing all these deep completions and many for TDs is that the QBs have time to throw the deep ball.  Slayton, Waller, Hyatt, and Campbell have been killing the Defense.

That brings me to being happy on the one hand and dismayed on the other. Unless the Defensive Line and Edge pressure players are holding back on the 11-11s, it's concerning that the only real pressure is coming from all these Blitz Packages that Wink Martindale is throwing out there. It also seems by default that Ximinez is the third Pass Rusher and although he flashes in camp, it's a problem since Azeez Ojulari misses games every season and Ximinez shows ugatz in live action.

It could be why Wink is deploying the Blitz out there so much but, I believe he's also doing it because the Giants' Offensive Line struggled in picking it up last season, either by the QB not moving the TE or RB to pick it up or because of a breakdown. They also struggled in double-teaming and picking up Stunts. So, as much as I'd like to see the one-on-one matchups finish up, it should make them more battle ready for the regular season.
It looks like we will see both McFadden and Beavers rotate with the clear Mike-Backer Okereke inside but I think Mikah has the edge. He's come on strong after a poor rookie season.

The woes at Nickle Corner looks to be the winner by default but how do they keep Tre Hawkins off the field if he continues to show game? It doesn't make sense to move Adoree inside and have two rookies on the Corners. This position won't be settled until after the pre-season games. The front runners are Flott and Holmes. Bobby Skinner and Justin Penik mentioned moving up the bigger McCloud and that's an interesting option. I like the Jack of all Trades and he would be solid in Run Defense.

I think the passing game will open up the Run Game and although Barkley won't get as many touches, he could have some breakaways. This is the season for Jones to have the option of reading the Box and Calling Run or Pass.

Cager had a better day yesterday and the fact that Waller is primarily a Receiver and can't block for $#it, I think this becomes a delicate balance of WR and TE. Sweeney has shown ability and so has Myarick but lets call a spade a spade... at 6'5" and 261 the man is not a FB, he's a TE. If Waller gets injured, I'd see him replaced by Hodgins in the Red Zone. After Bellinger, it comes down to the best blockers and I don't think that's Cager.

Safety looks good with McKinney, Pinnock, McCloud and Belton. I'd like to see McKinney in the Box on Cover One.

The Kickoff and Punt Returns look to be Eric Grey. Gillan looks solid hitting the Corner and booming it 60 yards off his foot and Gano is money. The rest of Special teams hasn't been sorted out yet. I don't see the next David Tyree at this point. Besides, Kickoffs can now be "Fair Caught" and the ball gets placed on the 25 according to the new rule.

I have to say that I'm impressed with Daniel Jones and how much better his decision to release has been. He's been deadly accurate, short to long. There is a large void between him and Tyrod Taylor so I'd like to see much less Read Option Plays that expose Jones to injury and limit him to a wide-open A Gap when there's nobody open downfield. As Taylor's contract expires, they need a backup similar to Jones. I don't see Tommy DeVito as that guy.

At Receiver, it looks like Slayton, Hyatt, Campbell, Beasley, Hodgins and Shepard. They kept 7 on the final 53 last year and that one will get replaced by Wan'Dale Robinson when he comes back from PUP. That guy would be among Colin Johnson and David Sills from where I sit. Bryce Ford Wheaton is destined for the Practice Squad unless he suddenly breaks out.

Some concerns? How long does Evan Neal stay in concussion protocol? How did that even happen? Matt Peart had a strong day yesterday before and after Neal went out and that backup RT Position must be decided ASAP.  What's up with Leo Williams who was rested two days in a row and is this a chronic injury that gave Schoen pause in giving him an extension to free up Cap Space? Is his replacement in the 2024 Draft? How will Parris Campbell be affected by this Tendonitis as the season wears on?

I think Jones overtakes Barkley as the number one selling Jersey. After that, Lawrence and Thomas. Then Thibs and Waller.

What is your dark horse pick? Mine is Hyatt.

If you were in the market to purchase a Jersey, what current player would you pick? Mine would be Lawrence.

Assuming that Saquon Barkley plays this season and with the addition of Waller, Hyatt and Campbell, along with Robinson and Slayton, the Giants have the makings of a very exciting Offensive Attack. The key to all of this is Daniel Jones.

In his second season with this Offense and Coaches, it's time for him to pick up where he left off at the end of last season. Hopefully he did a lot of film work and study to absorb the next level of plays that Daboll and Kafka gave him.

They are prime for inserting a No Huddle, Spread Offense, where there is motion to create mismatches and for Daniel Jones to recognize them pre-snap. He should also be at the stage to move players pre-snap and to have the freedom to change from Pass to Run and Run to Pass. It's a step up from the Read Options he's been executing.

Knowing when to No-Huddle and when to slow the game up will be Daboll's communication with Kafka and DJ has to be on the same page. They need to dictate the rhythm of the game.

I would expect Routes at three levels and I expect him to recognize how his intended first read works his man at the top of the route.

I expect to see  Barkley much more involved in the passing game along with Grey's development and having a role in this Offense.

I expect to see multiple variations of personnel packages.

Quick decisions, exploiting the Defensive coverage. This is also a tangible asset for the Offensive Line, when the Defense is on their heels. That's why continuity is key and deciding pre-camp who their Dogs are. They know what they've got. Time to move forward and replace the intended starter only if the he fails or is injured. The men they choose need to be able to Zone and Gap Block in combinations and that means they need to know what the man next to them is doing and execute.

This Camp is going to be very interesting.

Your thoughts?
