The Front Porch / Re: Movies' Characters

We've had such fun on our current Movies thread that I thought that I mind turn it in a different direction.  By placing a character's name on the screen we'd be asking the others if they can come with the name of the movie.  You can tell me what you think of the idea by the way you join this thread.  So, here goes:

1.  Dorothy

Wizard of Oz

2.  Leonard S. Vole

3.  Pontius Pilate

Many Movies, but knowing Jim, I would say Ben Hur

4.  James J. Braddock

Cinderella Man

5.  Richard Rich

6.

Any of several Rocky movies

7.  Aleta

8.  General Turgidson

Dr Stangelove

The Front Porch / Re: Sleeping thread

I don't know if this is so, but I was told as you get older, and I am older, you do/don't need as much sleep?

Myself, me, and the missus, always watch the monologues of Jimmy Kimmel and then Steven Colbert just about every night. She then goes to sleep and I stay up a bit longer to watch something on the DVR. I usually fall asleep in about 10-15 minutes after that.
Being a bit older, it is rare that I sleep thru the entire night without having to make a bathroom stop, once, sometimes twice (and sometimes even 3 times) a night. After that, I ALWAYS lay on my left side to fall asleep. It is a fact that that is the best and healthiest position for sleep, helping your heart and your stomach.

We also have found that we have to eat dinner no later than 7, but try for 5:30-6:00 as there is simply no way we can go to sleep with a full stomach.

I use headphones to make the bedroom as quiet as possible, and again, just put the TV on, and I'm usually asleep in no time.

I have my alarm clock set for 7 AM but I am usually up before it rings. That said, we both usually don't get out of bed till about 9, as that's when I try and catch up on my TV watching which I can't seem to do at night.

So overall, I get about 6-7 hours of sleep a night, sometimes less but it really doesn't seem to affect me in any way.

OH, I am NOT a napper. I simply cannot take time to lay down during the day for a nap. I can't say why, but it just isn't me.

The Front Porch / Re: Photography

I have been taking some trips and taking more pix, but I really haven't had the time to go thru them and see what's what. I am so behind on this. I just started going thru my pix from last Fall in New Hampshire. Many of the places we travel to, we have been many times, and even though I enjoy taking pix of things, some places and things have been photographed so many times, I sort of took a break.

I will start to put some more up in a week or so.

Just finished watching The Beatles-Get Back..

As I said in my other piece on it, it is 7 1/2 hours and would have been much better had it been narrowed down to about 4 hours.

So, especially in the final episode, it does pick up a whole lot. Billy Preston joins the Fab Four as they needed a keyboard player and though I never really saw him in action, he always has a smile on his face, no matter what.

It is really hard to describe all that was leading up to this concert. AT first, it was a live concert with 14 new songs, then it went to a smaller live concert, to finally someone suggested why not on the roof. This wasn't a great idea for most of the Beatles, but they went with it. So much of this, I never knew. I always thought they wanted to cut a new album and thought doing it on a rooftop would be pretty cool. That is about as far from the truth as one can get. They basically hated the idea--it was very cold, the roof wasn't as firm as they would have liked it and they only had about 6 songs to do.
I won't give away anything, but it was hilarious as two
Bobbies try to undo this entire concert because some people actually complained to the police about it.

Anyway, as I said previously if you are or were a fan of the Beatles, this is must-see TV. Overall I liked it, if not just to see how Yoko Ono is nothing more than a shadow to John Lennon. Whatever he does, or where ever he is, she is right there next to him, doing basically nothing.

I never really saw Breaking Bad and forgot that AMC was rebroadcasting the series all day every Saturday. Yesterday I started watching season two but the broadcast crapped out mid season. I picked it up later and finished the season and then set up the recording so I could watch the rest. Gotta say that I am impressed at how well this was written, produced and directed.

I would expect that the weekend before they might broadcast the late season of BCS.

I know I have told you several times, and several others here will agree, BB could very well be the best thing ever put on TV. It IS that good.

Look at the snapshots Ed put up. Why does Rock have his hands behind his back, basically allowing Smith full access to him? Rock was doing a monologue and if Smith came up, if I were Rock, I would think he was coming for some sort of playful thing, not to whack him. These guys have to know each other and usually, at the Oscars, everyone is buddies or pretends to be. If it were real, Rock had to have thought Smith was coming up for some air time and some playful thing. So Rock clasps his hands behind his back as he knows Smith is going to whack him, so he can't show anything back.

Why would Smith do something like this, because 15 million people were watching and his name is still being talked about today? PUBLICITY.

Concerning a 'streak'.

Is their 'streak' only that you play every day?

On my home computer, I haven't missed a word in months. I was away last week and used my wife's laptop and had a short streak there. On Sunday, I continued on my home computer and got the word on the last try and really never looked at my 'streak'. I didn't play yesterday but today I got the word in 4 and looked at my 'streak' and it was at 1. Why is that?
Is it, if you don't play every day, it reverts back to 1?

4.  "Will ya treat a fellow American to a meal?"

The movie Bogie should have won an Oscar

Here are a couple of obscure ones (I think):

1.  "But I cannot fight against the Queen."

2.  "If you ain't eatin' Wham, you ain't eatin' ham!"

I am also late to this, but, I watched the entire thing and rewatched it just after it happened. (you know rewind live TV). My first assessment was WOW, but then I never saw any sort of reaction from Rock, and that, to me, was a big-time give-a-way that it simply could not be real. After rewatching it, I am positive the entire thing was staged.
It's not like Smith just walked up there and tapped him on the cheek, he reared back and let him have it, and sorry, there is simply no way Rock wouldn't reach for his face. It is sort of an involuntary reaction. Bump your head, you reach up and check it. There is simply no way he doesn't put his hand up to his face if it were real. It even looked like Rock had a sort of smirk on his face as Smith was walking back.
I told my wife right away, even bad publicity is good publicity and what better way than on a show that is being broadcast all over the world.
Maybe at next year's award, both these guys will be up for acting overboard award.
Plus, I watch this show every year and I have never seen a worse Academy Awards show in all that time. Ladies with their bosoms hanging out, guys with no shirts on, guys with no socks on, even the tribute to those who have passed away was horrible as it was more about the singers and dancers than those who have passed. AND if I never see Wanda Sykes again, my life will be complete.

I just finished watching 'The Last Kingdom and it never let me down as truly one of the good series on Netflix. If you are into Vikings, Lords, and Ladies, backstabbing and jsut some great action, don't miss this series. I don't know if this was the finale for good, but it sure didn't hold anything back. Great watch.
